By Dave McKenna
Special to The Washington Post
Sunday, July 30, 2006; Page D04

The annual "American Idol" postseason roadshows are ostensibly concert tours. But the music -- 10 amateurs taking turns at tunes made very famous by other people -- isn't what lured 20,000 or so people on Friday to Verizon Center, where Taylor and the other first-name-only finalists from the 2006 season appeared. It's probable that most of the fans who, for example, cheered on Bucky as he butchered "Superstition" wouldn't pay the same money to see Stevie Wonder sing the song as it was meant to be sung.

There's no easy explanation for the TV show's ratings or the sold-out tour. But both phenomena surely have something to do with a format that lets viewers think they have a hand in launching plain folks from obscurity to the big stage just by voting in weekly telephonic elections. These fans also show up probably because they think they know the performers, either from hearing pathetic backstory (Kellie's mom abandoned her!) after pathetic backstory (Kellie's dad was in prison!), or reading about a finalist's flaw (Katharine's got an eating disorder!) in the tabloids. On this night, no surnames were used to introduce the singers, which made sense, because by the end of each season, fans are on a first-name-only relationship with the talent.

To be fair, some of the talent does have some talent. During her 10-minute set, Kellie (Pickler, for those who care) put forth on the show as a dumb blonde who would
flirt with a mannequin, flaunted the sort of sassy charm that can't be taught. Prancing around in jeans tighter than a freelancer's budget, she roared through Melissa Etheridge's "The Only One" and Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight." She could carry a sitcom or sit on a stool next to Regis. Though still a teenager, Lisa (Tucker), who sat behind an electric piano and crooned Elton John's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and "Your Song," already has a middle-of-the-road voice with enough agility for Broadway.

And reigning champion Taylor (Hicks) kept flashing a smile special enough to make everybody forgive him for all the non-spontaneous spasms and cheesy song selection ("Hollywood Nights," among others).

If everything falls into place, someday he might open for Kelly Clarkson.

But the concert provoked some questions, too. Namely: Bucky (Covington)? Somehow, nobody in the house seemed offended as the shaggy dirtball in this year's cast not only savaged Stevie but also brutalized Dobie Gray's "Drift Away," and earned a C-minus in chemistry with Kellie during a duet on "You're the One That I Want" (from "Grease").

And: McPheever? Second-placer Katharine (McPhee) made her debut performance on the tour after missing all previous dates amid tales of bulimia and laryngitis and canceled flights. For all the buildup, there was precious little shock and awe in Katharine's entrance. After opening with a wan version of KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," McPhee stood at the front of the stage and teared up like a beauty queen while milking the stuffing out of an ovation that wasn't louder than that given any other Idol. (Elliott's mom, in fact, got as much applause just for being spotted walking to her seat on the arena floor during an intermission.) At the risk of triggering a latent disorder, it must be pointed out that Katharine's act was hampered by a white gown so long and loose she couldn't walk in it. Citing doctor's orders, she left after just one more song -- "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" -- which also failed to bring down the house. Perhaps fans smelled a diva.

"She was better on television," said Lynn Schnitzer -- who brought her 13-year-old son from Lutherville, Md. -- as Katharine left the stage.

Someone's bitter.

Who's Dave McKenna? Is he the jazz pianist? I googled him in Wikipedia, and he's born 1930.

Or is he David McKenna, born 1968?

There are other Dave McKenna's around.

I wonder why this "critic" has to be so negative on the whole AI thing. His commentary is elitist.

A little article written mentioning Mr. McKenna at washingtoncitypaper.com. He apparently used to be a free-lance sports reporter. Maybe he should have stuck with that.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Working as a freelance writer for the Washington Post is a tough gig. Your life is nothing but deadline stress. You never know when your pieces will run. Your pay is bad—the average music review pays $100—and the play is worse—try Page C7. And don’t even think of complaining to the Newspaper Guild—you’re as expendable as they come.

In 2000, Post horse-racing stringer Dave McKenna—yes, like just about everyone else mentioned in this column, also a City Paper writer—ran afoul of also-unwritten sports-freelancing guidelines. McKenna’s offense: In a City Paper Cheap Seats column, he resurrected a 1981 hit piece on sports-radio personality Ken Beatrice by then-Post reporter Tony Kornheiser.

"All these years later, the story is fascinating, if only for its meanness," McKenna wrote.

It wasn’t the first time McKenna had mentioned a beloved Postie in his column. A month before, he wrote that the late, sainted Post columnist Shirley Povich might have harbored a grudge against legendary turf writer Jack Mann.

After the Beatrice column ran, McKenna was canned from the Post Sports department.

In an item published by the Post about the incident, sports editor George Solomon told media reporter Howard Kurtz that the mentions of both Kornheiser and Povich were "both unfair and unprofessional."

"If you’re going to write for a particular newspaper, even on a part-time basis," Solomon said, "there has to be some sense of letting the people you work for know what you’re doing."

McKenna says he knew where he lay on the Post food chain. "It wasn’t like I was shocked that this happened," he says. He still writes music reviews for the Style pages.

Katharine's summer is full of hope, full of potential, and promises to provide many bouquets to grace the home that I call my heart.

Washington Post is never favorable to beautiful women and I am not sure that is such a great review for Kellie either though it seems so at first reading. The Taylor is the worst though. Ouch! Wonder what Kelly Clarkson would say about Taylor opening for her.... lol!

Another example of newspapers playing musical chairs with reporters. I thought that was just a local problem (my local paper shifts movie critics into restaurants critics if you can believe it)--but now it goes all the way up to the Washington Post.

Well, the WP isn't always subtle in reviews I've seen and seems to want to bristle people as much as every other paper does nowadays. If you don't give a snarky review, then it can't be a true review in their minds. Have you ever seen a rave review of a concert in any paper recently?

I guess this is one time when shaky camera cell phones can give you a better experience than being there live. The footage we just saw (and the other from last night) sure looked like Kat would be better live than on TV to me. This guy must have been sitting in the cheap seats and not getting the experience. Then again, that video we saw taken way up high last night still gave me chills--and the video was blurry besides.

Reporters in sports usually think with more of a cynical edge anyway. But if you don't notice the aesthetic grace and movements of Kat here...you don't deserve to analyze a baseball game either.

There are a lot of people out there who do not follow Idol, do not like pop music and consider both to be common and for the masses and not to be taken seriously. I know this because until Katharine came along, I was one of them.

"If it comes from TV and ordinary people like it, it can't be any good" is the pre-conceived notion going in to an Idol concert from people like this. And as we all know, people see what they want to see, not what is actually there.

I wouldn't expect a positive review of an idol concert unless the reviewer at least has an open mind and is prepared to take it seriously. The reviewer should also be a TV and popular music specialist, not someone who only ever goes to classical or jazz concerts.

So - no outraged email to this guy from me, not worth the effort.

Someone who was not aware of all the events surrounding Kat's return to the tour might see her performance in a different light than we would. Of course, a really outstanding reviewer would take the time to understand context.

One thing we have to remember. People who hang around the music industry have seen a thousand talented people go down the drain for one reason or another. They're jaded. They've heard every story in the book. They aren't likely to be sympathetic.

When you read the author's comments on Taylor Hicks, brutally honest about his talent level as they were, you can see that he isn't one to mince words.

Getting hammered by a reviewer is something Kat will experience more than once. The true delight will be to see this same reviewer bowing and scraping for an interview 10 years from now. Sometimes, such a thought can be wonderful motivation for an artist.

It's a problem everywhere, Greg. Between this review, and the one that appeard in the Hartford Courant (which was also written by a stringer) I'm beginning to think that most regular staffers think themselves too "hip" to review an Idol show, so the job always falls to some freelancer or reporter from another department who reviews the concert as if he were auditioning to play Grumpy from the seven dwarves. Or the wicked Queen if it's a female reporter.

It's a sad state of affairs that we shouldn't expect something other than paragraphs of sarcasm from AI live reviews, but even so, McKenna's tone is cruelly snide.  Even his powers of simple observation seem to fail him. Last time I checked, when the crowd starts cheering loudly even before you FINISH a song (as happened with Kat and OTR) then that's bringing down the house, no?

And that "at the risk of triggering a latent disorder" line was below the belt. Not funny.

Having read many reviews by stringers and freelancers, I came to the conclusion long ago that these people are desparately trying to be accepted into the journalism world. They have decided that the way to do this is to not review anything positively, thus appearing "cool". Unfortunately for them, their utter lack of talent, cleverness, word command, creativity and thougtfulness was long ago noticed by others, and no amount of "cool" can overcome that.

That said, the Washington Post has long had a shortage of those who can provide thoughtful criticism in the arts and entertainment section. The only positive pieces often seem to be directed at those events or artworks that they obviously, by their writings, do not and are not capable of, understanding. Highbrow indeed.
