Katharine McPhee's road towards AI glory stopped in a few places - voice lessons, school musicals, performance camps and the Boston Conservatory of Music (whose alumni include Constantine Maroulis). Still, she finds it hard to believe she's on the business side of the camera for American's top-rated show.

"It's so weird for me to be here," she admits. "When you watch it on TV, you think, 'These aren't real people.' People on TV don't feel real to me. Like we're on the stage during rehearsal, I look around, and there's Carrie Underwood checking us out. It's like, 'Whoa! We're all normal people just having this amazing experience.'

"My roommate (Kellie Pickler) and I have spent a lot of time picking fun at reality shows, then we go, 'Hey, we're doing that too!' We start laughing and we can't stop for awhile."

All kidding aside, Katharine entered the Top 24 with plenty of expectations. During the auditions, Simon proclaimed her voice to be among the best he's heard. She lived up to the billing during her first semifinal performance before enduring a teeth-gnashing reality check in the Top 20 round.

"That was not my best performance," she recalls. "It was a rough week; I didn't know if I was still in or out. You forget the great things - or not so great things - that Simon, Paula and Randy say. You really, really never know. The first week, I was the one to beat. Then it became somebody else. It's always changing. I feel like I'm going to be gray by the end of this experience."

The next week, Katharine danced and pranced into the finals with a rousing performance of Aretha Franklin's "Think." "It was really nice just to have fun again," she said afterwards.

Katharine's life story could easily be subtitled, "Music." She grew up watching voice students walking into her house, where her mother gave lessons. Her paternal grandfather was head of the music department at Denver University, a renowned choral singer who toured worldwide, and a trainer of many classical performers. She appeared in choirs and musicals in high school and also studied at various performing arts camps.

Then came the three semesters at the Boston Conservatory of Music, which elevated her approach to music. "I learned how to command a stage, what stage presence is," she says. "I also found that bringing emotion to a song is very important. You have to convey your feelings in the song, fully express them."

Fans and fellow competitors alike have viewed Katharine as one of the most strategic contestants in AI5, but she points out the dangers of turning American Idol into a chess match.

"You have to look at people as competition and wonder what they're going to do to try to beat you," she says. "That's the reality of it. I definitely think strategically, but if I do too much of that, I'll lose focus of what really matters: Being the best I can be. Losing focus could mean having a horrible week, and that's the end of your run."

Katharine has spent the AI season eagerly awaiting the arrival of the genre shows. She feels her vocal range and experience at singing many kinds of music give her an edge, but she cites another reason why she's so relieved. "It narrows down the search for music," she says. "In the semifinal rounds, it was, 'Oh my gosh, there's so many types of music to choose from! What do I sing?' The genres make it less frantic for me."

There has never been a doubt in my mind, from the moment I heard and saw her, that she has something no other Idol contestant has ever had. I can't put a name or describe it. I just know she is magical, and has touched me in a way that no other performer has before. I sort of hope she sings, "It's a Kinda Magic" by Queen tomorrow night.

Krazy about you, Kat!!! You're an Angel on Earth!

Yes, she is "so smart." Thanks for posting this... wonderful article.

It just strikes me as a LITTLE odd that she says she learns these things at a school that her mother also teaches in her classes. Her mother never had time to teach her? I mean, I can see her not having time, but... I dunno...

You don't know what's magical about her? Well, personally, I have a good friend who Katharine reminded me of after we started seeing Kat's personality, so that made me like Katharine more. You see, I admire my friend and tell her all the time how cool she is - and I feel almost EXACTLY the same with Katharine. It's weird. But Katharine is rather magical, isn't she?

She always knows exactly what she wants to say and has no problem with being put on the spot. She definitely has an edge over ALL of the other contestants in that area. To me, she comes across as very intelligent and mature. =)

Thanks for the article. =)
