Katharine McPhee: Change songs and attire
Martini: On a night that had more off-key notes than a Friar's Roast, I actually enjoyed Katharine, who looked like a deer in the headlights when she found herself in the bottom three. Her The Voice Within was better than Kellie's soapy Suds in a Bucket, the not-so Real Good Man from Bucky (who finally found his cowboy hat) or Ace, with his George Washington locks and patented gran mal seizure at the end of theeach song, which had more clams in it than a spaghetti vongole at Umberto's in Little Italy. Big Mac was more likable, winsome and full of clever coloratura. Simon's faint praise of her sounding better than Xtina's version obviously didn't sway voters, nor did her riding crop outfit. I still feel she has the chops to take it to the finish. She needs to pick a big heartbreaking song.
Waller: Craptactular song choice with a message straight out of an after-school special and an eminently forgettable melody. No, she didn't sing this tune as well as <form> class=yqin action=http://yq.search.yahoo.com/search method=post>Christina Aguilera. She seems to develop pitch problems whenever she attempts to bend a series of notes slowly. And whoever put her in that ersatz riding outfit ought to be horsewhipped. Her apparent obliviousness to such an obvious fashion faux-pas is disturbing. </form>
Despite all the years of voice lessons that went into building this almost-perfect beast, a high-strung insecurity keeps peeking out from under the polish. She's got to relax, get in touch with her inner Bobbie Gentry and let her dusky vocal tone do the heavy lifting. And don't let her step onstage looking like a rhinestone cowgirl.
Elliot: What happened to the smooth, elegant, poised Katharine who made confident song choices? She looked like she got dressed when the house was on fire. Choose outfits that emphasize your exquisite natural beauty, and pick a sophisticated song that lets your soulful side blossom. Lose the mainstream pop-hit thing that makes you sound like one of the pack. Present the complexity of who you are with songs that are sultry and sexy, pained and playful, songs that say, "Baby, I'm a real woman."
Sculatti: She treaded water, and the country theme could allow her to skate some more. There's a great voice, but she hasn't revealed much of herself through song choices. There's a stronger interest level in others, like Kellie or Taylor, who may not be as good technically but you have a sense of the real person. I'm still waiting for that. The Aguilera song was not very adventurous.
It may be that Katharine is no more than another pretty face with a good voice who's ready to be molded by committee into a short-term hit-making machine. I hope voters have higher standards. Since she recently did jazz standards and ballads, she should go for something lighter and more joyous. She appears too staid and polished. I don't want to see her overemoting, and I don't want another self-affirming power ballad from anybody. She ought to listen to <form> class=yqin action=http://yq.search.yahoo.com/search method=post>Buck Owens and act naturally. We've got to see who's inside other than this dutiful straight-A on-pitch student. She doesn't have to do bad-girl posturing, but something playful. There's an excitement factor lacking here.</form>
