In Season 7, 'American Idol's' leading men may just break the diva mold

By Richard Rushfield, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 29, 2008

Despite perhaps all evidence to the contrary thus far in this season of the Chosen One, David Archuleta, I believe that the next American Idol must be female. In fact, to put it more plainly, I believe all "American Idol" winners should be female. The job of the men in the competition should be to serve as gracious sidekicks/also-rans (Justin Guarini, Bo Bice, Blake Lewis) or as comic relief (Sanjaya Malakar, Constantine Maroulis, Scott "The Body" Savol, Kevin "Chicken Little" Covais).

The "American Idol" competition is no place for irony, at least at its upper ranks. This is a singing competition, and what we mean by "singing" is raw, bleeding displays of wide-open emotion that tear the audience's heart inside out. Humility, joy, pain, jubilation and tears are what the public demands of its champion.

The problem is that for men, there is no credible model of masculinity with broad appeal that allows for such naked, unhinged displays of emotional intensity. The various rocker candidates all ultimately fail because, in the end, being a rocker is about maintaining one's cool.

The two men who have won the crown have been, in their own ways, giant non-threatening clowns, not true masculine presences. Mr. Soul Patrol and the Velvet Teddybear both had their talents, but in the end they were both giant, blurry, non-threatening, buffoonish figures, like real-life Barneys the 4-to-7 demographic could picture jumping onstage and dancing around with. They guffawed their way to the top and, not surprisingly, they have had the least impressive post-show careers.

The only models in my mind for "Idol" champions are Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or Faith Hill. Or perhaps now their second-generation incarnations: Kelly, Fantasia, Carrie and Jordin. And most of all, in my mind the ultimate "Idol" contestant of the pre-lapsarian era, the one who most perfectly combined the demands for relentless emotive singing and the wow factor -- Katharine McPhee (even though she was ultimately denied the prize by the closest vote in "Idol" history).

In contrast to the surly, completely inappropriate manner in which most of the guys received their judgments, the girls, to a woman, received their verdicts Wednesday night with dignity, grace and no whining (with the exception of Kady Malloy who seemed on the brink of a tantrum when she got her second straight pan).

In the face of the biblical forces behind the Chosen One, and the opposing dark forces arrayed behind Michael Johns, the girls' group is in danger of looking like a sideshow to the main event. But I believe that, in fact, this may be the strongest group of female talents ever assembled for an "Idol" Top 20. Which is to say, although there still is not one who leaps forward as an obvious contender, the median is very, very high.

At this point, where usually we are cheerily machete-ing our way through the pack to dig out a handful of decent candidates, there is no one we can easily afford to lose in the solid group of A-minus/B-plus+ personalities. Wednesday night, after the decent comeback of Kristy Lee Cook, there was no obvious dead weight in the group. Even Malloy, who has underperformed consistently, retains a glow and enough star quality to merit a place in the Top 12. It is too soon to say goodbye to Alaina Whitaker or Amanda Overmyer; too early in our journey to go on without Ramiele Maluby or Carly Smithson; Asia'h Epperson, Syesha Mercado, Alexandréa Lushington and Brooke White, we hardly knew ye! But by the time this is printed, two of you will have disappeared from our lives likely forever, never to follow in the brave pioneering footsteps of the great McPhee.

But perhaps after six seasons it is time for a change. Perhaps, hard as it is to think it, "Idol" is due for a new role model. And just maybe, in the epic battle of Archuleta and Johns, out of the carnage to come, we may find just that.

I think it's obvious that the format of the show does lead to female contestants generally doing better.  Guys just don't sound that great singing by themselves in that arena.  At least most don't.  Because the kind of singing that generally works on the show isn't really that masculine.  Chris D almost broke through that mold and I do think someone like David Archuleta might be able to do it because of his age & personality...he could be believable singing "Idol-type" songs.  But this is a show that picks "This Is My Now" as the final song as makes Blake sing it.  Yes, it favors the girls.  No doubt.

But the Kat part of the article is soooo cool.  I've always thought Katharine was everything that an American Idol should be and never got the people who thought she was all the things we've read them say.  As the judges like to say sometimes, "You are everything this competition is about."  And that is Katharine McPhee.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

The great McPhee- the ultimate idol contestant. Yes! I've written about it too many times before. How pleasant to read something similar to what I have always said. I'm not surprised, but rather vindicated and justified. For some, it's quite easy revealing their thoughts in the midst of the obvious, I guess, even though it may not always be the general consensus of the public. Katharine's discovery in Idol will always be the basis of this "ultimate idol" thing from where future wannabees will derive inspiration. Way to go, Mr. writer. Thank you!

Ok, anyway, this guy wrote what I exactly had in mind about AI7's possible male winner, after hearing them all on Wednesday. But even then, I will be a loyal girl talent-admirer, nevertheless. It's giving me pleasure that I could relate with them better than I could with the boys. I am objective with how I see the boys' talents, but the way I see the girls is from a different perspective. I judge the girls according to the inherent vocal talent I've heard of them. Ok, I can forgive the nerves, the sickness and the choice of songs, but I cannot forgive the quality of the voice. Then, again, this time around, I have to consider the total package value. With this factor, I could be accused of throwing off my perspectives, and I'm prepared to accept it.

One sure thing I'm in for, is FUN, regardless of predictions and polls. The writer further stated that this new group is teeming with talent. He seems solid on Archuleta and Johns as his picks, and I agree with him. But I'm quite pleased that he had to mention the comeback of Kristy Lee Cook and his obvious admiration for the star-quality talent of Kady Malloy who deserves to be on top 12. Yes, this guy is good!

Thanks for posting, Minnie!

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

Okay, somebody tell me what pre-lapsarian means.

Simon had one thing right, Kady looks and sounds great in the film clips and then when it's her turn to shine, her lightbulb goes out. Or rather she seems to stick a bushel basket over it so you can just see it flicker, which is kind of disappointing because has so much to give, if she could just get it out. Archuleta is more consistent, another thing the judges are always raving about. "Get up there and sing like there's no tomorrow every single time!"

According to Dictionary.com (I had no idea either Groucho):

prelapsarian \pree-lap-SAIR-ee-uhn\, adjective:
Pertaining to or characteristic of the time or state before the Fall.

So this presupposes that Mr Rushfield thinks Idol has Jumped the Shark, a feeling that many have after last season's Sanjaya episode.

OK,Groucho.....looked up pre-lapsarian on wiki:

"Lapsarianism is the set of Calvinist doctrines describing the theoretical order of God's decree (in his mind, before Creation), in particular concerning the order of his decree for the fall of man and reprobation. The name of the doctrine comes from the Latin lapsus meaning fall."

So I'm guessing the writer might be discussing the decline of Idol since the Kat era.I did read that the ratings have decreased and that the ptb are considering revising the freak show that the auditions have become.

As far as, "singing like there's no tomorrow".....Kat did that on her AI run; that is why every one of her performances remains a classic of great vocals; stage presence, and unique signature moves.Kat also knew how to work the camera.
Don't see any of the AI7 females demonstrating anything even close to the artistry of Katharine!!

Hi Goody...all one has to do is take a look at the number of views on Kat's AI youtube videos! Many are 50,000,but Over the Rainbow has almost 1.5 million and the comments are recent...meaning people are still looking at Kat's perfs and,as one person said"hoping AI 7 singing would be as good as Kat's"!(not so far)
Kat set the standard;the benchmark for quality!

BTW...Love Story also as !.5 million views, but the Over It video is the winner with 4.25 million views!
