…Jordin Sparks. November. Now standing apart from her "American Idol" competition, this year's winner will issue her risky debut. She better hope it does better than Taylor Hicks' first, or Katharine McPhee's for that matter.

What's the one word or phrase people would use to describe Jordin? Did she get categorized to the point where people in general associate one type of song, or even (incredibly) one song, with her? How often does THAT happen to someone who's basically just starting out in the business? I listened to part of Jordin's single, and guess what, it actually sounded the way I remember her sounding on the show, which I couldn't say for any of the initial Promosquad leaks of possible singles for Katharine. K. almost started with two strikes against her. Doesn't look like Jordin is doing that. It will be interesting to see what her debut actually does.

Jordan's single,Tattoo is released today, but the CD debuts in December...via Jive(?) records.I listened to Tattoo and despite her lovely voice, the song was only just OK for me!! As with our Kat,Jordin has so much potential as a song stylist/interpreter of a variety of genres.Wishing her the best!!!!!

Jordin shouldn't be compared to Katharine unless they are recording in the same genre. Katharine's vocals are well trained, Jordin's are not. Katharine has a unique timbre to her voice, Jordin does not. There is 6 years age difference between the two singers and Katharine was singing before Jordin was born. If J'S debut album sells better than Kat's, it won't be because of superior vocal ability.

I don't think anybody can nail down what genre music Jordin will come out. This can also make or break her. Anyway, I don't listen to Jordin, and I'm kind of disinterested in anybody in AI6. I predict AI6 alumnis will not be as successful as the AI5 batch. I also predict that AI5 is the high point of the AI franchise, and is going downhill from then on, unless they retool it - change in format, change in judges etc.

I have had the pleasure to be connected with the production team of Canadian Idol this summer and it seems that their version is working. There is no pre-ordained winner, the result is a true calculation of votes, and the right people are eliminated. All of the contestants on CI5 really suck, but it is kinda interesting because it is not fixed or pre-planned. It would be great if American Idol would follow this path as well.

i just listened to tattoo..and it is alright. and i like jordin actually quite a bit. but the song is really dry. it doesn't seem right for jordin..not sure how to explain...i think i'll buy her CD but its not a GREAT single by any means..and i'm sure she will probably outsell kat cuz even if the winner comes out w/ bad stuff their debut usually sells pretty well. so i would think yes she will outsell, not saying she should but i think she will...

The AI winner is assured at least gold, if not platinum, just because they are the winner. I see no reason for Jordan to break with this tradition.

I guess the question is will Jordin outsell Taylor. Or is this setting the bar too low?

Jive Records must have a different budget than Arista. Taylor was cheated out of a single and the promotion that comes with it.

Ok I just listened to Tatoo for the first time and it has the same problem that Kat did with Over It. They have a singer with immense vocal ability and give them a lame song. I now believe what Kelly Clarkson said to Clive Davis about him not liking younger peoples style of music. He has lost his touch if he is indeed the one making the decisions on the song choices. Maybe he has nothing to do with it and thats the problem. Jordin is going to bomb if this is indeed the first single, I hope it just something to hold us over until the album comes out. if this is what Sony and all its record companies it has acquired is going to put out for American Idol winners, then the show should end now. Maybe its time they hookup with DefJam and Jay-z or Timbaland to make some quality music. You take a look at what Rhianna done, would she be where she is today if she had won American Idol. She is releasing hit single one right after another. Also what has Sony/RCA done for Kat lately, no push for Love Story and there are more songs on her album that have single potential. They maybe should pick one of the 3 power ballads and see where that goes. Katharine is an amazing singer but without proper promotion it won't go anywhere.

I haven't heard the single yet, but if Jordin's doing the rhythmic pop thing and flops, it's OK with me. No offense to Jordin, she seems like a nice enough girl, but Kat's having a hard enough time in an increasingly crowded space.

I happened to take the time to listen to Jordin's "Tattoo" early last week...and found it to be mediocre--if still an earworm potential. She even said herself in interviews that the song became stuck in her head. Well, sure...if you do about ten takes it might. Nevertheless, I still see this doing pretty well on the charts. And--that's sort of unfortunate when earworm songs that are mainly not all that great end up becoming hits...which only produces more.

This, I think, starts to give proof why the music business is in a quagmire. A crafty formula has been made for songs now that enables them to get stuck in a person's head and subsequently makes them a hit. When you look deeper into the song, though, it looks fairly vacuous.

Let's just hope this is a "testing of the waters" for Jordin rather than an example of the blueprint behind her entire sound. She's another one who shouldn't waste her voice entirely on stuff that's only good for the groove. Here you have another situation of a singer who excels at power ballads who can't sing them because they just aren't marketable any more. Yes, the music business isn't only just in a quagmire with songs--but also with great singers who may waste their talent just because of a fickle public (or maybe because record labels think the public won't like something).

I say give power ballads a chance--or at least a new creative spin. God knows the music industry has enough creative arrangers and producers who could give a new twist on the genre so singers such as Jordin and Kat can show off their vocal gifts.

Good luck to Jordin on her November release. I'm just wondering if she'll end up having to delay her album, too, when she realizes it's almost impossible to release an album in a limited amount of time. Because she's younger, though, I think she's probably capitulating to the producers...which makes her different from Kat on knowing what she wants in a singing career.
