Is Broadway the "American Idol" Graveyard?

The Great White Way is riddled with the disgarded musical corpses of former "American Idol" wannabeens of yore.
Anthony Federov, Fantasia Barrino, Diana Degarmo, Frenchie Davis, Constatine Maroulis, Tamyra Gray
As of May 29, Season One finalist Tamyra Gray will join the cast of "Rent" (she previously starred in "Bombay Dreams"), and simultaneously, rejoins the club of former "A.I." contestants who have been making ends meet on Broadway. It's not a J.Hud Oscar but it beats the late shift at Applebees!

Other contest losers trading Hollywood dollar bills for Playbills include: Season Two's impeached diva Frenchie Davis, who has been performing in "Rent" off and on for four years, Season Four's creepy crooner Constantine Maroulis, who hammed it up in "The Wedding Singer" last year, and Anthony Federov (memba him?), who just this month joined the revival of long-time hit, "The Fantasticks." While Diana Degarmo, who came in second on Season Three, took a break from her soccer-mom 'do and non-existent record sales to don a beehive in "Hairspray."

Even Fanatasia Barrino, who actually won "Idol" and at one time sold millions of records, has hit the NYC stage. To her defense, Miss B. has been getting rave reviews and selling out the house as Miss Celie in Oprah's production of "The Color Purple."

So while America may have become immune to the McPheever ("Over It," anyone?), you never know, she may just turn up on Broadway -- in "Kats."

This is a "mention" of Katharine, none too flattering, none too positive. IMO, this is nothing but a negative forecast too prematurely of Katharine McPhee. They are implying that this is the trash heap of ex-Idol contenders and a pronouncement of failure for Kat.

I hardly think Broadway is career-death for a singer. I think this author is just looking for some mileage from AI. Sometimes being mean is more interesting to some people.

And we totally know that Kat will make Broadway the in thing to do when she gets there!

As the author may notice, all the Idols in Broadway she mentioned have strong clear voices that is one of the main requirements for an actor to be in a play. He/she must be able to sing the lyrics just as clearly as it can be spoken. So for him/her to diss these Idols, he/she doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

And by the way, for the record, Kat will blow everyone away when she hits Broadway. Just they wait. And then, let them eat crow.

ALL YOU HATERS AND BASHERS, TAKE HEED!!!

I think we should allow them to consume something else...but we refrain from saying what on a family board.

Apparently TMZ has been accurate in Hollywood rumors they keep track of for the last several years. They should stick to what they do best and not start becoming Perez Hilton wannabees and start doing snarky opinions. That market's already been cornered--and not for the good of man or womankind to say the least.

It's too bad TMZ doesn't have a higher opinion of Kat than that. It's a bit bothersome, considering they seem to have some omniscient spies who follow her around lately. For the record, they blew it on the rumor Kat would sing on the Idol Gives Back show a couple weeks back. They obviously don't have eyes that can see everything.

Broadway always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to supposedly hip people in the biz. Just because some stars go there when they fail elsewhere doesn't make Broadway some kind of safe haven for lesser talents. Some of you already mentioned that you need the energy of ten people, plus have a voice that can hold up under considerable stress to make it on Broadway. Not many Top 40 stars would do well on Broadway, because it's too taxing. You have to do two or three shows a night...sometimes for six days in a row. To me, that's a real boot camp in proving what you have as a performer.

Besides, Broadway's had a major resurgence in the last year or so. Right after 9/11, it dropped off a little...mostly out of fear probably. If Kat did a temporary gig in a major Broadway show in the near future...she'd be the toast of the Great White Way. Also, she'd probably win a Tony Award for that performance. And the Tony Awards still count...even if the west coast doesn't usually give a flying fig about them.

My wish: To see Kat play Christine in the final runs of 'Phantom of the Opera.' This, only as a limited engagement so she can do other things in a year's time. Though she'd probably extend the run of the show for another twenty years and make Andrew Lloyd Webber even wealthier.

EXACTLY Barlo. Most people would give their eye teeth to star on Broadway. The author is grasping at straws, lol.

That's the second time TMZ has done that and referred to Over It like it was some massive flop or something.  And since when is Broadway some kind of failure?

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

Lame!  OI did just fine, and Kat will do broadway one day...when she wants to.  It won't be because she can't do film or music or TV...  People are dumb.

I posted a diatribe about this over on IDF the other days. I don't post there much, but when I see a subject like this that gets my goat....

A whole bunch of brilliant musical theater majors hope and pray  for a chance at a lead in a Broadway musical. In fact, they hate it when ex-Idols get parts ahead of them. They consider it "stunt casting" when TV or film personalities are cast on Broadway solely for name recognition. Usually such casting is a dismal failure, but some of the ex-Idols are actually suited for broadway roles, such as Fantasia in the Color Purple, or Diana DiGarmo in Hairspray. Kat is also well suited for Broadway, with her musical theater training and stage experience. And I have no doubt she'll be there some day, when she's ready, on her own terms.

I agree wholeheartedly bcollan. Kat is a natural to perform on Broadway someday and I look forward to it with great anticipation. I wouldn't be surprized though, if we first see her succeed in a number of other career choices. Besides her music and modeling, don't be surprized if you see a clothing line with her name on it before too long! She certainly loves fashion and has stated that she has entertained the idea and that it could be a possibility at some point.

Two or three performances a night? Wow, that would be grueling, but I don't think even Broadway pushes its people that far. Still, 5-6 shows a week is a lot. Some stars, if they can get away with it, have their understudies do the matinees, though, or used to back in the days when i was in my Broadway period and taking in everything I could afford.

It's probably not surprising that people who can make their fame and fortune in other ways don't want to tie themselves down to that kind of a taxing schedule, although a 50 city tour surely is no picnic either. The other side of it is that not just anybody could do Broadway. If you require a ton of studio magic to make a listenable record, you'd never make it with just you and your trusty microphone, that's for sure.
