Good songs can give anyone 'McPheever'

Norma Palacios | 5:52 PM PST 3/6/07  from Talonmarks a college publishing website

Well, she might not have won "American Idol" last year, but I have to say that Katharine McPhee is a decent singer.

On her debut CD, Katharine McPhee (RCA Records) displays a good vocal range for someone who is a California native.

With the song, "Over the Rainbow," McPhee soon became a television star and, as Simon Cowell expressed, she did have her moment. Out of the 12 tracks from the album, she has the staying power of a star.

Perhaps you think or feel that she wasn't good enough for "American Idol" but I do think she has the making of a star.

The fact that she was able to talk about her anorexia and her continued battle with weight has proven that she is only human. But that's besides the point.

Being that it seems that everyone has an album coming out after 'Idol', McPhee's is a good one to pick up for the simple fact that she has a voice that she must share with the public.

I don't mind that the album has an R&B quality sound to it and she does show or, in this case, hear some swagger, that is opened up by McPhee.

I say that if your mother can get attention because she is a vocal instructor, the star is within you and that is what McPhee has.

Now, all she has to do is just be as good as former "American Idol" winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and she will be on her way.

The slickly produced opener "Love Story" displays a certain swagger, and "Not Ur Girl" and "Open Toes" follow it up with still more spunk and attitude.

If there's a crisp, smartly maneuvered Christina Aguilera-meets-Beyonc魡nd-Mariah sensibility at work in those songs, the ballads belong to McPhee alone.

Two songs to listen to are "Love Story" and "Dangerous" because McPhee is pushing herself to be great and she is.

I love the songs all together as well as the album. However, you might disagree but then again, you, the fans of "American Idol," those people of more than 30 million, made her one of your finalist who competed against Taylor Hicks.

But what ended up happening was "Somewhere over the Rainbow" made her a star on TV; "Ordinary World" and "Better off Alone" have the staying power to make her a star in music.

That will only continue if she releases another album like this. As in the end, people got 'McPheever' and so will you. So, pick up the album.

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.Others stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same. That my friends is Katharine McPhee

Someone compared it to the Amazon review and found that the writer had lifted quite a bit directly from there. The rest of it sounds almost like someone speaking English as a second language, but as long as they're being positive who cares.

First off, Anorexia is when you don't eat and throw up to lose weight (I believe)).
Bulimia is what the reviewer meant to say but aside from that, this is a very positive interview.
Katharine definitely does have the makings of a true star here. Unlike other finalists from American Idol, she is one that
will not be forgotten because her talent has spread to many worldwide fans. The album has a song that can appeal to
almost anybody and if her second album is as good as this one, then in time she will rise up to the success that Kelly and
Carrie have. Katharine McPhee might even one day be considered as a music icon because of her amazing gift, that would be awesome.

Peculiar review.  She has good range for someone who is a native of California?  What's that supposed to mean?  If she was born in Pennsylvania AH HA...then of course she could sing!

Anyway...it is a good review overall or a positive one I should say.  The writing isn't very good.

She wasn't good enough for American Idol?  Huh?  But then you say she can really sing and to pick up her CD.  What?

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

This line is definitely lifted from the Amazon review (and maybe another recent review that I can't place at the moment):

But what ended up happening was "Somewhere over the Rainbow" made her a star on TV; "Ordinary World" and "Better off Alone" have the staying power to make her a star in music.

And a college major is writing this? Yes, I echo what all of you already said...plus the idea that this person may be from another country and perhaps is still learning English. It's hard to tell from her name...even though that tells you nothing when it comes to determining if they've just come to live here from another country. I stand up for those from other countries who can't master English right away, though, because English IS tough to learn...even for people who speak English. People who write things when not understanding English sometimes use those online translators...and some sentences in this sound like that was used at times. That may be why the "anorexia" thing came up because of it being lost in translation, so to speak.

In any case, this woman's heart is still in the right place it appears. Nobody who speaks English well (and studying in college here) would write a review this weird unless there was some kind of other challenge there in the English language. If this was written by an American-born person who speaks English well and is going to college...then be glad you aren't going to college right now.

By the way, if that California comment is actually what it really means...apparently there's a stupid stigma going around that says that nobody from there can sing. If this person actually thinks that, then maybe this person's home state is turning into another country that seceded from the union...

The writing is a bit disjointed, but is overall a good review and recommends buying the album.
