KATHARINE MCPHEE
The 22-year-old American Idol finalist offers up a pop-heavy list of her all-time favorite tunes.

#1 Beyonce, "Listen"
Beyonce tore up the Grammys with her rendition of this Oscar-nominated tune from the Dreamgirls soundtrack.  "Her vocal performance is amazing," says McPhee.  "It's about growing and learning things very quickly, and it resonated with me."

#2 Justin Timberlake, "SexyBack"
"One of my favorite records of the year," says McPhee, whose album features tracks by the song's co-producer Nate Hills.  "It's not that the lyrics are all that brilliant, but I love the vibe, I love the beat.  It makes you feel sexy."

#3 Jane Monheit, "A Case of You"
McPhee has never heard Joni Mitchell's original, but she can't get enough of Monheit's jazzy take:  "'I could drink a case of you and I would still be on my feet' -- I'm a romantic at heart, so I love that kind of stuff."

#4 Sheryl Crow, "Strong Enough"
"This is an older one," McPhee says of the ballad from Crow's 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club.  "it's a sweet, simple song, and it reminds me of a specific boy I was into."

#5 Fergie, "Fergalicious"
McPhee has a soft spot for the hit single from The Dutchess:  "I love when she starts doing the quick-rap thing -- "Hit it, Fergie!"

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

^I was just going to start a thread about that playlist, Joe.  I've been busy today--so apologies for not replying to your email showing me that RS playlist. As you mentioned in the email, sticking Jane Monheit in there floors you in realizing how vast Kat's musical tastes are. Though I'm that way myself. I'll listen to jazz one minute...and then conversely listen to several Hip-Hop tracks right after. Some people think I'm quite eccentric going from listening to a classical piano piece one minute and then switching over to Nelly Furtado the next. To me, I just consider that massive appreciation of music out there rather than capitulating to what the media wants you to do and listen to only one type of music day in and day out. Kat's setting a great example here of widening your musical tastes without worrying what people think.

Well, some of you may remember that Kat mentioned Jane Monheit as one of her many vocal influences in a famous radio interview done last summer. Though, while doing that interview (on a Top 40) station, she apologized for bringing Jane up at all to the typical younger demographic listening who undoubtedly didn't know or care who Jane Monheit is. After that, I thought Kat was repressing some of the other sides to her musical personality just to make people think she didn't occasionally listen to singers who do more classic material. I can't blame her, really, when she has to appease her younger demographic...and they judge your character based on what you listen to.

I'm just happy to see her be brave and just put it out there that she occasionally slips in a Jane Monheit CD. And here she said it in Rolling Stone yet. I bet they loved it that she did it...because they have sophisticated tastes there. The TRL demographic may not get it though.

Yeah, Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You' is a great song. Diana Krall's covered that (though only on a live recording) among a few other artists. I think Paula here (zzyzx) said she knows Joni Mitchell, so I'm sure she could say a lot about that song. When I was part of the Diana Krall internet community back around 2001/2002, I used to hear about that song all the time and got to know the lyrics quite well. It's truly one of the best romantic songs ever written.

Definitely, Greg, I could go on all day about Joni Mitchell and her successes. In fact, I would suggest to Katharine that she research the songs of Joni Mitchell as she explored the combinations of pop and jazz genres. Her songs are smart, raw and well hewn bordering on poetic. Beyond the tequnique and skill, there is an honesty, vulnerability and emotional courage in her songs, including A Case Of You.

I draw a certain parallel between Joni and Katharine in that both their voices are extraordinary, dynamic and just plain lovely. Joni Mitchell forged a long, successful career in not selling music with sex. They are both musicians with surprising breadth, and when performing I have seen Joni hold the entire audience in her hands. Both artists are versatile in that they could excel in any genre. I applaud this choice on Katharine's playlist.

I always wondered why Katharine didn't try to take more of Jane Monheit's songs, but obviously she didn't want to do that kind of album, although SOTR was closest to Monheit's version of the ballad.

I believe that there was a bit of a fuss made by Monheit's people over Katharine's arrangement of SOTR. Apparently they had expected Kat to acknowledge Monheit before she recorded the song.
