Interview from Kidzworld: Part 1, Part 2
Sindy: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Katharine McPhee: Growing up I would have to say Paula Abdul, ironically. I also really loved Alanis Morissette and Celine Dion. Oh and I loved Bush. I had a huge crush on Gavin Rossdale and had posters of him all over my room. These days, I'd have to say Fergie. She's so fun. Also, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Puffy, KT Tunstall.
I liked Bush, too - it would've been cool to hear songs in the style of "Come Down", "Little Things", or "Glycerine" on Kat's album.

Sindy: What's been the biggest hurdle to overcome?
Katharine McPhee: I guess dealing with the media. The online world is just so powerful these days - rumors spread like wildfire. I have people asking me the craziest things - that aren't even slightly based in reality.

I guess Kat's probably referring to the Scientology question there--even though there's plenty of other rumors about her that aren't even close to reality. I just didn't realize how many there were. I think it's a lot better now, though, than it was during 'AI' itself. I remember all the rumors over there were fast and furious (plus in June during her illness)...until Kat started speaking out and bringing down rumors in one swoop. That's all it takes. And Kat knows how to do it all herself so a publicist doesn't have to do it...if they actually ever do.

Anyway, this was a good interview, so thanks for posting that. It was substantive enough coming from Kidzworld. It shows that kids can conduct better interviews than adults nowadays...that's either a great thought or a scary one.

I guess I got it right when I wrote a fanfic here (I think it was the 'McPhee Imagination') showing Kat listening to Paula Abdul's latest hit on the radio around the early 90's. It only makes sense that Kat played Paula's songs once in a while along with her ultimate favorite, Mariah. It was probably weird for Kat to deal with Paula's strange criticisms during 'AI' when you grow up listening to her hits as a kid. For other people, that would be a huge crush to one's psyche...even if it ultimately was for Kat at times.

Kat's interest in Bush (the rock group) is quite interesting there. It shows Kat was in to a lot of different types of artists and music while growing up. I'm glad she's finally revealing that and not letting people run away with the thought she listened to nothing but one type of music all the time.  Anybody with the astute musical ability she has obviously listened to a lot of stuff as a kid. Having that both in older music and new music was important in her development.
