Katharine McPhee by Chuck Arnold America, you got it wrong -- again. First, Chris Daughtry's hit debut leaves no doubt that he was prematurely voted off last year's American Idol. Now Katharine McPhee's first CD shows that she -- not Taylor Hicks, the R&B wannabe she lost to in the 2006 finale -- has the makings of a real pop idol. In fact, her self-titled debut is one of the best albums ever by an Idol alum, blowing away Hicks's own eponymous effort. Although McPhee often came off as a Celine Dion clone on Idol, here she displays a knack for the kind of R&B-flavored pop of Christina Aguilera or a young Mariah Carey. Indeed, "Each Other" is a hip-hoppish midtempo charmer in the vein of Carey's "We Belong Together," while "Ordinary World" is the type of big ballad that you can just imagine Xtina sinking her pipes into. McPhee, who benefits from sharp production from Timbaland protege Nate "Danja" Hills, only really stumbles when she ventures into Pussycat Dolls territory on "Open Toes," a silly shout-out to her favorite footwear. (3 stars out of 4). That's a good one! We like Chuck Arnold! He pans High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale on the next page. I'm wondering how you get 4 stars. He raved about Katharine & Fall Out Boy and gave both 3 stars.

I agree with his "Open Toes" opinion, and I have always said that, but not for the reasons he states. I think she handled it very well, but I have a problem with the material only. The rest of the review is right on!
