Not 100% but 3 out of 4 stars, generally positive. Better than my dang Detroit Free Press. I've gotta write those people soon now...

When Katharine McPhee wowed American Idol crowds with Over the Rainbow, everyone assumed she would make a ballads/standards album. She decided to go the contemporary- pop route, and she makes her self-titled debut a worthwhile trip (* * * out of four). She does, like far too many younger female singers with poor taste in role models, indulge in an excess of Mariah Carey trills. But her voice is first-rate, and the songs are generally solid and occasionally exceptional. She'll have plenty of time to do the Diana Krall/Eva Cassidy ballads album. (If this one doesn't sell, she may be forced down that road.) Meanwhile, this is a pleasant pop surprise. >>Download: Superb single Over It, intriguing Neglected >>Skip: Dull ballad Ordinary World, R&B misfire Do What You Do
I assume Ken Barnes wrote that. It doesn't say that but it sounds like a shorter version of the review he wrote on USAToday.com's Idol Chatter. All the way down to the bit about Mariah Carey so...and funny how he loves Over It and doesn't like Ordinary World. Seems like a lot of other reviewers say the opposite. But that's OK.
Hannah Storm mentioned the great review in USA Today...Katharine had no idea what she was talking about. "I try not to read reviews". You got good ones in the New York Times & Daily News too Kat! Now the hometown version of the Daily News wasn't so kind but...the fact is the two most read papers in the country are the USA Today & New York Times. So...it's wonderful that Katharine got good reviews in both places.
