Finally, after all the blood, sweat, and tears..oh the tears.  I have finally successfully capped something!  And it is none other than Kat's amazing performance at the Grove!

Thanks so much to differentlife for all his help.  He put more time into this than I did.  So here you go.  I hope the quality is good enough to be worth the trouble.

Mark - Thanks so much for figuring this all out with Different Life.  I just downloaded the MP3 of the Christmas Song and now have two Kat Christmas Carols - yeah.  I now need to make a kick-ass Christmas Mix CD before the holiday seasons over.  Thanks BigShady!

Thanks so much for all of your hard work on this, Mark.  Now this version is perfect on my IPod.  Two Christmas songs from Katharine back-to-back!  Plus a nice story and a sweet message from Kat!

The physics equations have been figured out!

A huge round of thanks to Mark and Differentlife for getting this set up. I downloaded the video--but I unfortunately need a codec installation for sound. So I downloaded the MP3--and WOW...you can hear every nuance in Kat's voice as we didn't hear before. The video quality on my soundless copy is flawless too on WMP.

I'll get that codec install later--because I actually prefer hearing just the audio. You notice more details that way--and I say again that Kat's version of 'TCS' is outstanding. To be honest, I liked her 'O Come All Ye Faithful' a little better--maybe because she just uses her pure voice with little melismatic touches. But hearing those grouped together with 'OCAYF' on a digital jukebox is like nothing else out there when it comes to modern holiday music available.

At least reading Differentlife's tutorials was an education onto itself. Now I realize that transferring a DVR file to the net isn't as simple as I thought. In fact, I think it exceeds Einstein's equations...

Never have I seen such dedication to the art of computer help, than differentlife's attempts at leading Bigshady through the parallel universe that is video capture and format manipulation. Thank you so much, both of you, diff, for being so patient, and BigShady, for wrestling the beast to the ground and finally getting a good headlock on it.

The video's superb quality guys and well worth all your time and dedication.

Shady, your perserverance in making this happen has been fantastic. (And I tip my hat to diff for publishing multiple posts of such length and complexity that they, to this day, still boggle the mind.)


Again, thanks for taking the time, buying the hardware, reading the esoteric prose of diff and staying the course.

Just a suggestion for future work, Shady, I would keep the video bit rate higher especially with a great source material like you had from your digital box. 

TheKingOfNorways file (from an analog tuner card)  had these specs:

Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 256Kbps [Audio]
Video: DIVX 640x480 29.97fps 1213Kbps [Video 0]

Shady's file (firewired from a digital set top box)  had these specs:

Video: DivX 5 640x480 29.97fps 985Kbps [Video  0]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384Kbps [Audio  1]

Diff's last cap (ET on MTV) had these:

Video: XVID 640x480 29.97fps 2347Kbps [Video 0]
Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 219Kbps [Audio 1]

Of course, you do get a smaller file by  tamping down the vidoe bit rate but running full screen you can see the difference.  Again I can't see your source file so this could very well be the best that could be made from it.

ah that feeling of satisfaction that you can only get after long hard work ends in success. I'm so glad it worked out this way. With AVIs it's much easier to extract the audio and not have to deal with WMA/WMV conversion.

BigShady, you're actually taking a big load off of my mind because I've been capping HD streams live. (I don't have a cable box DVR) so I'm always on pins and needles hoping nothing goes wrong. This way, I can rest assured you're there to get HD straight onto the box.

Anyone else who wants to do the same but was put off by the massiveness of the instructions: A lot of my instructions in the other thread can be tossed, because it was a lot of suggestions that we didn't end up using. Basically, it can be summed up by the following:
E = mc^2

k enough shop talk, off to see and hear again the result of your Herculian labors... (Surely your software challenges felt (or smelt) most like his Fifth Labor? )

CRB, I could run it again with a higher bit rate and see what happens.  Whatever the max is..I forget, but I'll run it and see if it doesn't turn out to be a massive file with little to no quality improvement.

I think diff said that the bit rate for the program was capped at 4000kb/sec which is well in excess of what Vinman used for his HQ files using an HD source mpeg like trist's files ( I checked his were ~3000 kb/sec) where there is a lot more detail to capture.

  As  I said in that other thread the art in these is keeping the bitrate as low as you can without  giving up the video quality of the original.  So, I wouldn't  "max out the bitrate" because if  Vinman can make his caps with a 3000 kb/sec rate then a 4000 kb/sec rate for standard definition would be more than necessary.

I think running double the rate of your first file, or just run what diff has been running ~2400 kb/sec video might give a nicer looking result.  Obviously I can't see the source mpeg to do a direct comparison.  A file run at that rate should  still be well short of  100 MB in size.

3000 kbps would be awesome. That would still be less than 100MB, and you should be able to upload it in a reasonable timeframe.

My 1000th post!

I'm waiting for my family to join us here in Florida for the holidays and just discovered  Kat's "The Christmas Song" . WOW. The clarity and audio is amazing! Thanks so  much BigShady and Diff for all your "blood, sweat and tears"  on this very special gift to us. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.

I look at all the clips fullscreen on a 23" widescreen monitor and take my word on the fact that a 1200 mb/sec file and a 3000 mb/sec file ( even at the same so-called  resolution & made from the same source file) are totally different animals.

If you are worried about the file size being too big for the "dial up folks" don't be, I'lll put it up on YouTube for them.    Seriously,  I  have, and many others have,  downloaded all the Vinman and trist files over a dial up connection( before I got DSL) and people who want the "good stuff" (ie top notch Kat files) will do everything they can to get them, including letting a download run overnight.  Moreover, this is a performance clip, a very rare thing indeed.  And also Christmas music, which isn't something we are going to get very often, if ever again.

Shady, before you spend more time with avi.NET, you should update it. Looks like they just released an update yesterday. It uses the latest XviD codec, so the result might be a lot better.

So just update both avi.NET and the avi.NET support package. Here's the link again:

The safest way is to:
  uninstall avi.net, XviD, AviSynth, and Vobsub using Add/Remove Programs
  install new avi.net
  install each of the avi.NET support files (XviD, AVIsynth, vobsub) inside the zip.
However, you might be able to get away with skipping the uninstalling step.

Reboot and then maybe the reencodes will be even better

So, thank you so much for your persistence and thanks to the computer team that helped you: Diff and CRB. I've been reading that thread and I found it very complicated . I just did another conversion with the old avi.net before seeing diff's post, and I'm uploading now to sendspace.  I used 720 res and 4000 kbps as apposed to 640/3000 on the previous one.  It's 45.3MB compared to 39.5.  After it's done d/l I'll install the updated avi.net and see what I can come up with.

How do I know what the bit rate of the source file is?

 What's interesting is I don't know where this program is getting this bitrate from.

If you have Media Player Classic, and I think you do, play the file using it  and then while it playing click File>Properties>Details Tab and you should have info that looks like this.

Video: XVID 640x480 29.97fps 2347Kbps [Video 0]

Here is the bitrate info for one of trist's HDTV MPEG files:
