Well, there IS this review from the San Francisco Chronicle:
"In a technically formidable yet oddly uninvolving concert at San Jose's HP Pavilion on Saturday night, Bocelli fulfilled his operatic duties for the first hour, lightened up in a white dinner jacket later on and joined recent "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee for two duets near the end ...
When McPhee finally appeared, dressed in a complicated gown with a zebra patch on her belly, it was after 10. Her voice sounded at once a little nasal and airy in the "Somos Novios" duet, as if she hadn't quite warmed up properly. A popping microphone didn't help. McPhee returned once more for "The Prayer," a messy but stirring meditation full of parallel harmonies for Bocelli and her. That was it for the McFans in the house: The "American Idol" favorite played a modest supporting role in San Jose, with only a few of her soaring phrases on offer."
Those are just the quotes that pertain to Kat. Full review is here:

The writer wasn't very complimentary, but at least he was civil and fair-minded, unlike that snotty fellow who reviewed the Sacramento show. That guy sounded like a member of the "wine and cheese" crowd who was offended that "peasant's" entertainment like an AI runner-up dared invade his oprea show.
To which I say "Ptooey."

Crtics...I'm tellin' ya...and I've never encounterd one who can actually sing, or dance, or one who otherwise had any experience in the field the were critiquing.
At least Clive Barnes has been reviewing dance for some 50 years...he knows whereof he speaks.
At least he said she has "soaring phrases"

It is a critics job to be negative for some reason. It is very rare to see a good review of anything. By being negative, the critic sounds superior to all the rubes who don't have the intelligence and taste that the critic has!
Its always seemed funny to me that the popular entertainment of yesteryear becomes the elite cultural snobby affair of the current era. Shakespear was written for and performed for the great unwashed. Opera wasn't so elite way back when, there were always cheap seats. All the great composers incorporated folk melodies into their great works. Jazz was the music of whore houses and drunks and drug addicts, now look at it! Black tie affair only.
Just musing....

Hey, careful there, pastorel ... I *am* one!
I review movies.
No offense taken or anything, but do consider this. We're all "critics" at one time or another, and we rarely have experience in the field we're reviewing. If boards like these were reduced to people who were actually singers or performers, traffic would be cut at least in half!
When you get paid to do it, the point is not to have actually made a movie/sung a song/whatever, but to know enough about the field to write intelligently. I've never made a movie, but I've seen enough of them and know enough about how they're made to have an informed opinion.
And Pheenom ... it's not our "job" to be negative. At least that's not how I look at it. We may seem more negative than we actually are, because when we are negative, people tend to remember it more. (Paging Simon Cowell).
What I was trying to point out was that the SF critic was at least open-minded about Kat and evaluated her fairly, even if we disagree with the review. The Sacramento critic, on the other hand, just stuck his nose in the air and pinched it, seemed to me.

So, any news from the Hollywood Bowl performance? As the third concert Kat was in - I would think that would be the most perfect for her - as by third time lucky she would be much more comfortable.
