Well, I just lost an hour wandering around figuring out what all the buttons and pictures were. Lord, where did some of that stuff come from? No wonder she blew me out of the water with Come Rain or Come Shine. She's been practicing that one for years. Except that by the time she got to Idol with it, she'd matured a bit and did exactly what Simon said (much as I hate to agree with him) - she became a star. This gives you a bit of insight into how "overnight sensations" get to be that. They work at it for years and years.

You can thank Ken for those, not sure how he managed to get them.

They are of historic importance, you can see where she came from and how she has grown. And how she is the same.

Got little bugs and development to do still so no time for chit chat!

So the long-coveted footage finally surfaces! Good work, Ken!

I don't think I would've been hooked on Kat based on this performance alone. She sings quite well, but styles "Come Rain or Come Shine" more on a gospel (?) vein, which isn't quite my cup of tea. What I really loved about her Idol performance of it, besides her phenomenal vocals, was the jazz arrangement and her incredible stage presence. (The website brought up the clip in a tiny, unresizable window, so I couldn't really see what Kat was doing onstage. I'm basing my opinion of her stage presence on the brief historical clip from Extra!)

I was reading some old message board comments of Idol during the week Kat sang CRoCS (not having witnessed it in real time), and it seems this performance (the last note) was the origin of the derogatory "McScreech" nickname? If that's where the moniker started, it makes no sense, because it's common for jazz singers to end a song on a loud, brassy note. I really enjoyed seeing Kat singing in a true jazz singer's style AND exhibiting jazz mannerisms (like how she "cut off the band" at the end of "Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues")...

This is great. I really really appreciate this! They have finally surfaced! Now we only need all those home videos... LOL

Anyway, I don't get why she sang the same song every week. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm not very familiar with the show's concept, so maybe someone could help me out? Thanks.

That must have just been the way they did it. We're all just used to Idol.

When these things surface it gives me hope that someday, somebody will go digging in the archives at NDHS and find that old video that just has to be there somewhere of K and A doing Santa Baby.

I think it may have been a $ issue.  They have to clear the song to be able to play it. Maybe with CROCS they clear it once and they are good.  The other song Kat sang was her mom's song from Out of the Blue (P's CD) and obviously that probably came at a lesser cost or none due to the family relationship.

I really enjoyed seeing these Next Big Star videos. I gave up hope that these would turn up. How mature she looks and sings for her age. Great singing. She was beautiful and sexy then too. She could have won AI if it had been around at the time. They all compare well to the later AI CROCS. Smooth, clear singing, good intonation, expression, great runs, and interpretation, a great performer, charming. I really hope she returns to singing songs that show her off more.

The show title,The Next Big Star was surely an accurate prediction of what the future would hold for Kat! Listening to those performances, one realizes Kat had it all, even at age 17.....her signature vocal nuances, style and evolved interpretations. The last note of,To Dream Again, is almost operatic! As evidenced with her more current Me, Mary Jane, and Stand renditions,I really believe Kat is destined to be renowned for her brilliant interpretations that will cross all genres from jazz to gospel!

I think that's what really sets her apart. She doesn't always do everything technically perfect, but she knows how to inject feeling into a song, especially when it's the right song and she seems to have a personal connection to it. Then the years of training mesh with her feelings and something wonderful happens.

I agree with you but it makes me laugh that one of the criticisms of Katharine on Idol was that she was a little stiff, she didn't feel the songs, she didn't emote...I always thought that was crazy talk.  But there is a different in her performances when she really relates to a song personally.  We've seen plenty of examples of that over the past almost 2 years.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
