A huge thanks to Entrepreneur, Bigshady and everybody else for providing a full video of Kat singing the National Anthem. It's been a long time coming finally hearing her sing it in its entirety on video. The last two times--we only got about half of it and never did hear how she'd tackle the final "brave" line. Well, she hit it out of the park here on that final line. I have to say, though, that Kat sliding down on some of the higher notes earlier in the anthem might be looked at by some as a vocal weakness. I think she was just stylizing it that way on purpose...but maybe she was having some vocal issues that day. As always, though, I forward the quality of her voice as being what I love rather than worrying about the technical angles. If all I cared about was how technically proficient Kat was...then I would have had issues from the beginning. I just wish other vocal analysts would appreciate quality over technical more.
That linen dress was probably done on purpose--because it indicates purity with the white color. When singing the NA and trying to cement a reputation, it's a perfect look to give the impression you're taking it seriously and respectfully.
It's just great to hear Kat sing it traditionally rather than take a melisma on a long one-hour journey before getting to the second word in the chorus. The NA gets more stylized every day via other artists. And here some countries practically hang an artist if they do that to their own country's anthem. Kat takes it back to pure, unadorned singing that easily brings out the emotions more effectively.
Let's be glad everybody and their sister was there to see it, too. When the NA's sung in the morning, most notable people are still in bed, busy getting fueled by Starbucks or in the makeup chair.
Thanks so much guys for weaving your tech magic so we might enjoy Kat's awesome performance.
The website now has the morning session posted and Kat's performance can be viewed about 12:53 mins into this video. I am so proud of her for sharing her talent at this outstanding conference which I wished I could have attended. Tix for this conference sold out in 3 days. Well, check this out and see who was there to hear Golden Girl Kat, like former Prime MinisterTony Blair, Geraldine Ferraro, Jody williams....

Thanks, Minnie! I'm glad I held off on commenting on the actual performance. At first, I thought she wanted to go for the melismatic fireworks to "make the song her own," but just wasn't finding the inspiration during that early morning. It does appear on second listen that Kat was trying to be more faithful to the melody here. If she ever records the Star-Spangled Banner (unlikely, sure), she should add the extra verses that are usually omitted from the song.
New videos with BigShady's video cap + Version 3 audio Final versions. I think.
- Anthem audio is the same digital source just like Version 2 audio above, except that I called it Version 3 for no reason. It should sound the same. - Non-anthem audio is Shady's better quality TV audio but with noise reduction applied to lower the background hiss in the part leading up to the anthem. Kept as its original mono.
