Historically important video: Katharine's very first TV appearance?????

From iavemcpeever at IDF

i was just watching back the san fran auditions...and i saw the guy right before katharine (john williams)'s audition. he made it, and when he stepped out of the room and is talking with ryan and stuff, you see kat walking in the audition room right behind them original.gif
hahha just thought id let you guys know thumbsup.gif

ill clip it and put it on sendspace if anyone wants to see

http://www.sendspace.com/file/uqs2s6

Surely this would be her very first appearance? I'm surprised none of her sharp eyed fans caught this before. One for the archives.

As usual with Katharine, funny mishaps occur - she has trouble opening the door because of the previous contestant who backs into her. Why is this not a surprise?

In the first one she is genuinely happy for the previous contestant who just got through.

In the last one she is seconds away from the moment that will change her life ohmy.gif

Thanks for posting that! I had never seen it before! Funny, how even the smallest thing can put a smile on one's face! It had a very refreshing effect!

CRB at IDF found an even earlier picture of Katharine in the first rounds waiting in line. This is from the AI website, pics only, this wouldn't have been on TV.

Sounds like a contest to me. Who  can find the earliest picture/video of Katharine from AI?

I see a very determined girl behind there in the crowd. She took the chance to be different and unique and it paid off - very well for her, indeed.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

^The true future star almost ALWAYS gets ignored for inexplicable reasons. It's been that way through the history of show business. Hard to believe these two people in the foreground were apparently the darlings of Ryan's attention when they undoubtedly shrieked out something horrid to make Randy, Paula and Simon's day even worse.

Yeah, these are very, very interesting pics--and thanks to Simon for locating them. We see Kat getting mentally prepared to sing her emotional rendition of 'God Bless the Child' there. Not that she's going into some kind of meditative state or anything. She's obviously the type who thrives off last-second emotion. And I love that in performers when they can create magic on the spot. She has that emotional well there that she used to great advantage once she got inside that room. Of course, it also helps when you're absolutely determined to succeed after having a long time of depressing failure. That audition was an outstanding primer in triumphing over adversity and learning how to tap into your spirit and extract a performance that blows everybody away. I hope Kat never loses that ability to tap into something greater than your ordinary reality.

That last shot is quite interesting too. It makes you wonder if anybody sensed anything just seeing her before she sang 'GBtC.' I was busy watching the Winter Olympics during that week (yeah, I've already swatted my wrists over that a long time ago )--so I never did see the details until weeks later. It's always fascinating to look back at these shows and extract little details that can tell you so much based on people's facial reactions and body posture.

Not trying to hijack your thread, so please don't take this the wrong way.

"Katharine's very first TV appearance?"

Well, there definitely was something before American Idol. Katharine appeared on a TV show titled, "Next Big Star" (PAX Television) and Ed McMahon was the executive producer. I think the show only aired for one year and then was pulled.

Anyway, Katharine sang "Come Rain or Come Shine" on Next Big Star when she was a little bit younger.

No biggie, I'm sure the OP just forgot about this clip:

Kat had a lot more gravitas and maturity when she sang CRoCS on American Idol. (Although she actually looked older on the McMahon show, strangely.)

"You are correct, Sir"

Is that  the only song she sang on "Next Big Star"?

I've always wondered how many performances participation on that show entailed.

Checking tvguide.com information...

Episodes -

Premiered: September 09, 2001, on PAX

Last Aired: August 31, 2002

Ed McMahon's Next Big Star (3 total Episodes)

Somewhere out there there lurks an Ed McMahon fan with a DVD burner and an archive waiting to be smoked out.  There are some clips of Next Big Star up on YouTube and Google, so somebody has the shows archived.
