Kate, we're never mad about anyone's educated opinions.  They're all good.  And  Kat is the first to say that she's not worried. She feels blessed and fortunate at all the good stuff that is happening around her including all the love and support of her fans like YOU!

We are definitely working together -- working on a record together. She sings so magnificently, it's just amazing -David Foster-

Well, I definitely do not think that Kat's debut album is crap. I certainly did not expect it to go the rhythm pop way (and Kat was well aware that even her fans would be surprised), but it turned out great, and I'm pretty sure it would have turned out great any other way.

zzyzx is right... Kat made the album that she wanted, so let's just be happy for her right now! The fact that she did this for Yahoo! though, gives us a hint that she's totally willing to do this type of music too. Perhaps in the future... and we all know that Kat has a bright one, full of albums that we will all love!!!

A great performance by Kat! I like the laid back, almost bossa nova-style arrangement and vocal. Could have done without the Paula Cole visuals, though. She's kind of an intense performer visually, which I would normally like, but with her it creeps me out. The whole Lilith Fair, female folk singer movement of the mid-to-late 90s was way overdone; I could handle Sarah McLaughlan in small doses, but did we really need Jewel, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Dido, and the like? So I'm actually glad that Kat didn't do a whole album of this type of song.

It's interesting that some of you folks think this song is less pop than her album. I have Paula Cole's original and I feel Kat's version is MORE pop-oriented than Paula's. I think Paula's is much more wrenching and emotional even though Kat couldn't stay on her stool because of the emotion she was putting into it. IMO.

Agree, Nora Jones move over!
I must say the simple guitar background highlights her singing. In contrast, the songs in her album are overproduced unfortunately, hence hiding Kat's voice quality.

Some of those pictures are so beautiful.  Amazing...not that she doesn't always look good.  But it's amazing the girl in the video blog with the sunglasses on turns into this....that didn't come out right.

And yeah...great song.  Can they replace Dangerous with this?  Too late?  Oh well.  Just take Dangerous out, put Me in.  And the CD is perfect!

But let's not go into the...oh, this is what her CD should be thing, please?  Katharine doesn't want to be Norah Jones.  I think her comment about "Ordinary World" being her least favorite song on the CD and the other time when she said that she actually wanted MORE dance tracks on her CD tell you that.

Now, that doesn't mean I don't love this song.  Of course I do.  But she has stuff like this on her CD.  You've heard Better Off Alone & Home, right?  (I almost called it Better Off Home...Better Off Home Alone, maybe?)  Yeah...so let's not get lost in the facts here.  She didn't want an album full of this kind of thing.  Not that she doesn't like this kind of thing.

But as I said...she doesn't want to be Norah Jones.  She wants to be Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera.

This is sooo beautiful, however, the unfortunate thing is that some people continue to use the term 'overproduced' to describe Katharine's album.  What it is is people who use this term basically don't care for harmonies and vocal stacking.  Kara Dioguardi did a great job on the vocal production of the background harmony and it should not be described as overproduction.  Sometimes overproduction becomes necessary when the artist has a hard time hitting notes or staying in key, and then it is necessary to use echoes and cover-up.  Not so with Katharine's album.

Just to add to this...I sort of mentioned this above but.  Kat's album isn't overproduced.  I could point you to a lot of examples out there that ARE overproduced.  A lot of what people think is overproduction is just a style of producing music these days that is described above better than I can do it.

Kat made a choice to do a pop/R&B album.  And she did a great job doing that.  If you wanted something else, that's fine.  But...I think it's pretty obvious Katharine wanted to prove to everyone that she could make a Top 40 record.  She said as much as the finale when she sang BHATCT.  EVERYONE knows she can do stuff like "Me" in her sleep.  And it is fantastic.  But I think (as she's said before) she wanted to do something that "kids my age" would want to listen to.  She doesn't think that it's this.  At least not heavy doses of this.

The term "overproduced" is one that is thrown around without ever really being defined precisely.  People work more from their connotations rather than any clear set, fixed definition.  Some people would consider any Pro Tools use or any performance that can't be reproduced live as overproduced.  By that definition Kat's album is overproduced.  And so is every album coming out.  Kat's vocals are so stacked on some tracks that even a brace of backups can't create the effect of the studio recording.

differentlife was commenting over at IDF on  the fact that the recording levels  on the album are  uniformly overboosted to the point of  clipping most bass notes on the album, EIG being the worst offender.  This is a standard practice in the recording industry  these days but it is very much a "production" decision made. Overproduction? You make the call.

The crackling sound that occurs repeatedly in Over It is more than mere  "overproduction", in my opinion.  Extraneous noise added to the track that I originally thought was a goof but I've been talked into believing that it was done on purpose given the regularity of it, lord knows what that purpose might be because it sounds awful to me.  Let's call it counter productive production then rather than overproduction.

I don't think nailing down a definition of "overproduction" that is going to satisfy everyone is happening  any time soon or that it will cease to be a catch all for people  to put down music that they don't particularly care for.

As a matter of fact I do think there's some stuff on the album that is pushing the "dreadful crap" description, but that's just me, and I'm not trying to second guess RCA or katharine about what she needs to do to be a successful recording artist. If she wants to stay around, she's gotta do what she's gotta do. And she's fine with that. She wants to be a pop star. Okay. I get it. And although I admit to nearly having a stroke the first time I heard Open Toes, I now find myself humming and singing it at odd times because it's growing on me. I'm even coming to terms with Do What You Do, even though its lyrics irritate the hell out of me for some reason. (Dangerous makes me cringe for a rather different reason.) This is part of my ongoing education. I'm learning about contemporary pop music, which I would never have done without Katharine.

I've heard people say they like the "Me" cover but would have been bored to tears with an entire album of that sort of thing. I wouldn't. But I'm not going to get what I want, so I'm learning to like what I get. That's a good way to stay sane. Maybe part of it is just that, after listening to a lot of what's popular today on places like TRL and YouTube--both of which were Unexplored Territory to me a year ago--I've decided Katharine's album totally beats the bejeebers out of a lot, maybe most, of it. That's called getting some perspective. Who knows, maybe some of these days she and Fergie will do a rap duet and I'll even learn to appreciate that.

Well, good job, Phee. Thanks so much. Great vocals there KAT. Amazing video and photos. I'm taken once again.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

Kat made a debut record that fans of any age would luv besides something for Top 40.  She's done  that. I assume it was Kat's choice to make this fab cover of 'Me". Is it Top 40 material. Is it Nora Jones? Is it for fans her age?  Kat is showing her VERSATILITY performing a song like "Me" and she said that she LIKED it.

A friend of mine who is a Nora Jones fan said, "I have to say I like Kat's album better.  Nora's new album is kind of boring!"  If Kat were to record a whole album of only dance songs or only ballads, pleeze, no, that would be boring too.  And Kat must know that though 'Ordinary World' is her least favorite, she'd perform it if I requested that, because "the customer is always right."

OMG OMG OMG were the only words in my mind when I first heard this song... Kat was absolutely amazing in this song! This is the kind of of song that she should sing, this is the Kat that I love the most! Her rendition really touched me alot. ALOT. I really hope she will produce an album like this in near future, this is what she is GREATEST at. Gosh I'm so much in love this song now... haven't been touched by her voice since "The Christmas Song" (lol)... I'm mesmerized....

To be great is to be misunderstood.

this song is soooooo good, i haven't stopped listening to it for 2 days now....just her and a guitar - it is what she is meant to do - ultimately. no question this kind of music, these types of songs are her calling.

when i heard this (i'll date myself) - i immediately thought of the late eva cassidy (jazz/blues) singer - but Kat has even more depth to her voice....I would KILL (well not kill) to hear her sing Joni Mitchell songs...i wish sarah mclaughlin hadn't grabbed River....but Kat could sing any of Joni's songs and take them to a whole new level that hasn't been done before....

No matter how good this is - I agree with you, Minnie - she was right to put out a Top 40/Pop R&B album first. The more people that hear her, the better and that's what her CD is all about. It is a GREAT debut CD and it opens the door to Pop which will lead to other things....eventually down the line.....she will have to do a CD with these types of songs....

The term "overproduced" is one that is thrown around without ever really being defined precisely.

At one time, big unsexy-haired (or is that a plant on his head?) Phil Spector used to be considered the epitome of studio overproduction. That "Wall of Sound" became endlessly copied after he instigated that in the 1960's. Even The Beatles succumbed to it on their final album. And it's been heard on millions of pop albums since then--right up to present day. A lot of rock albums of various kinds have enough sonic power to implode your brain. Frankly, a lot of people are tired of the slickness of the studio and wanting to get back to real musicians. People know you can create an entire orchestra (and even a voice) out of digital technology now. It takes a lot more skill to actually play musical instruments. First of all, you get real emotion when someone's actually playing a guitar, piano, etc. Just to save money, though, it's much more convenient to produce it through digital technology. Whether actual musicians were playing instruments on Kat's album, we don't really know for sure. There were obviously a few...though a lot of synth sounds too. That's why I like her band so much now. They've finally connected...and they're all damn good musicians. Her music director on the piano is obviously very skilled. He probably wrote the arrangement for 'Me' too. If he did, Kat should stick with that music director for the rest of her career.

But as others have pointed out--I don't know why there has to be such a division between this song and what's on her current album. This song could have easily fit in to the style of her current sound. In fact, it may have been the perfect ingredient for providing just a tad more variety on the album rather than deciding to put something like 'Dangerous' on there. Perhaps Kat could have sold enough to go beyond Gold by now had 'Me' maybe been on the album somewhere in the middle.

In any case, it's obvious that Kat prefers to have the freedom to do any kind of music she wants when she wants to do it. At least she has these type of forums (Yahoo, AOL, etc.) where she can show her different sides without having to make an entire album of same material. Making an album and doing this are two distinct entities now--and she probably knows that the fans can easily burn this performance on a CD anyway if they want to hear it in their iPod.

I'm just curious now what more Kat did during this Yahoo session. Didn't we hear that it'd be another mini-concert--or was this going to be the only thing she did there? It probably took long enough to make this, considering the production values they put into it. Knowing Kat, I bet she did this in one take too. The emotion is too powerful not to have been done spontaneously.

All told, this proves without a doubt that Kat can do a cover of ANY song and make it all her own...and weave overwhelming magic with it. While she has to distinguish what's marketable from a money-making standpoint to what's done in a free forum...I have no doubt this would shoot to #1 on the AC charts if it was released as a single. When people look for "The Best of Katharine McPhee" someday...this will be there.

Heart Warming!
I can't believe what I was missing! Being sick you can miss out on a lot. I just recovered and finally heard the song that I kept hearing people talking about and what they say is true. This is Truly Beautiful. Definitely fits Katharine's style very well. After hearing Paula's version afterwards, I can't decide which one is better because both Katharine and Paula have  extraordinary sounds. But since I am a Kat fan, I am going to have to go with Katharine's because she looked and sounded so beautiful while singing it. The emotions and expressions throughout the song really draw you in. This song is high up there next to "Some Where Over The Rainbow" (In my opinion). I am going to add this to my Itunes because it really touches your heart especially when it's sung by the one and only, Katharine McPhee.

And those pictures are as beautiful as she sounds.

Here's the thing with "Me" and how it relates to what Katharine can do.  I think a part of the reason many of us enjoy he so much is because she can sing so many different kinds of songs.  And that's what she tried to do on her album.  Some people think that's a sign that she doesn't know who she is as an artist or whatever.  I think it makes her album more interesting.  Maybe you don't like "Do What You Do" or "Open Toes"....you'll probably like "Ordinary World" then.  Or maybe you don't like "Better Off Alone"....perhaps you should try "Not Ur Girl".  I like all of it but...and I really love "Me".

I'm happy to have another Kat song to add to my Kat Playlist on my IPod.

Since the "bored to tears" comment was mine let's elaborate on that....I don't want an album full of the same type of stuff straight through no matter what it is.  That's one criticism I have with Chris Daughtry's album.  No it isn't all the same stuff BUT...and I haven't listened to it 100's of times but I can't tell a lot of the songs apart.  They all sound good but some of them sound the same.  You can't say that about Kat's album.
