Katharine McPhee
MTV: What has been the biggest challenge in Pursuing a post-‘American Idol’ music career?
Katharine McPhee: I guess making the record has been an amazing dream come true, but it’s definitely been a lot of making sure it’s the right song for you. Just really trusting your instincts, for me, was the toughest part, because at the end of the day you have to do what you think is best for yourself, no matter what. There’s so many people saying what they think and what kind of record that you should make. That was definitely the hardest – just saying what I really think and how I felt, because I’m still so young. That’s what I think is the hardest part about growing up – learning how to speak your voice.
MTV: Your parents are both in show business. What great advice have they given you?
Katharine McPhee: My mom has given me the most advise, Just as far as being good to your fans and stuff, but I think the best advice my dad [gave me was] just be an artist. Lik on the show when I would get stressed out, upset [about] being in the bottom two, whatever, I’d be just stressed about anything, he was like, “You know what, Katharine? Just be an artist. Don’t care what other people are saying or whatever, just go out there and just sing – do what you do.”
MTV: You recently showed up on the TV series ‘Ugly Betty.’ Do you think you’ll try more acting not that you’ve made your debut?
Katharine McPhee: I’d like to, [but] I’m so focused on the record right now. I think what a lot of people know about me is that I was pursuing acting even before ‘American Idol.’ I was one of the girls in L.A. pounding the pavement, going on auditions and stuff, and I studied theater. You know, there are a lot of things that I want to do. I definitely want to do theater at some point.
MTV: What about politics? You were the student body vice president at your high school. Do you have your eye on the White House?
Katharine McPhee: (laughs) OK … I mean being a celebrity people say enough things about you as it is … That’s all I could take! I couldn’t take being in the White House. Not with people saying things about you all the time. People say enough about you as a celebrity.
MTV: What are some of your favorite MTV videos right now?
Katharine McPhee: Fergie’s ‘Fergilicious’ song right now that video is really cute. I like [Christina Aguilera’s ‘Hurt’ video. I think it’s really cool, it’s got like an old carny kind of feel to it. I like Chris Daughtry’s video [‘It’s Not Over’] Beyonce’s ‘Irreplaceable’ and Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love’.
Now we'll be hearing Kat sing-speak "Do What You Do" whenever that phrase comes up...along with "Over It." Those songs really found some familiar catchphrases that people use lately. That was wise advice from Dan McPhee though. Good for him and Peisha for understanding the best approaches to handling show business. Kat's family support system is really one of the best of any I've ever seen in the show business world.
