Trippy & Phee, Thank you for finding and sharing this great gem! I would definitely buy this on DVD! Are you reading this RCA? Put in on DVD!

I championed RCA putting this out on a DVD (or future special edition of Kat's album) on Kat's MySpace comment section this morning. I'm not even sure Kat knows how great this thing turned out...so I hope she saw my post there today.  This EPK shows how effective Roger W. is as a publicist to say the least. Both the print press kits and this one are probably some of the best press kits ever compiled for a celebrity. Of course, Kat sells herself well anyway. All you need is Exhibit A-Z.

There's so many great moments in this thing--and I was hoping we'd eventually see footage inside the studio. It would have been criminal had there not been cameras inside there to capture a possible piece of history. And the good news is that there were cameras all over the place in there (or almost the proverbial fly on the wall) to capture a lot of emotion and expressions of everyone involved in the album's production. I never even knew what Nate Hills looked like before now. He pretty much resembles how Kat described him: Mostly quiet--yet really focused on getting the job done. His female assistant on the computer was all seriously business, wasn't she?

Some of my favorite goofy moments: Kat breaking out into 'Hello My Baby'...sung by the famous frog in the Looney Tunes cartoon 'One Froggy Evening.' That shows Kat's wacky Broadway side--and imagine her singing that in a Broadway musical comedy with top hat and cane.

Then, I'd have to cite Kat doing some Greek dancing while Emanuel Kiriakou and Walter A. play those ancient Greek string instruments. (I'll have to look up what those instruments are called exactly.) Amid all the pressures and emotions...Kat kept things lightweight to likely keep her sanity. When she was in those dark booths recording--all she needed was water dripping in there to probably end up going crazy.

And, yes, the 'OW' moment was the most magical thing I've seen of Kat at work...other than her awesome live performances. You almost wish they would have used THAT particular take of the song--even though the final is still amazing and will likely get a Grammy nod next December. Notice Walter A. and EK saying "You're killing us in here!" at the end (meaning they were blown away). Seeing Kat thinking she blew that take ("Whatever...") made you realize just how much of a perfectionist she is.

Anyway, go request this on Kat's MySpace so RCA sees that we want this on DVD. They could have at least put that as DVD-ROM content on the CD itself. That's fairly common...even on debut albums.

Edit: A huge round of thanks to Simon and Trippy for finding this and providing the downloads.

I was actually working with destinyxx, we had got the .vob files off the DVD and converted to avi and half way uploaded when trippy11 posted her link. Anyway, I learned a lot and here is a usefull tool for you:

download DVD Decrypter: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

Rips and decrypts a video off a DVD. That and Super, the worlds greatest video file converter, and we are set to boogie!

download "Super": http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

So it was worth the effort.

I'm having a hard time using this thing...could you give me a mini-tutorial on the basic operation of this thing? Thanks!

What is it you are trying to do and what is the problem? The decrypter worked pretty much by itself I found. And just taking the defaults in the file converter without even understanding the options will give you a very decent video.

Or are you downloading and trying to use the VOB files?

I'm not sure that you do know what he looks like because Nate "Danja" Hills isn't seen recording  in the studio with Katharine in the in this  video.  He does appear in the still photo montage at the end of the video though holding Nena in his lap.  Just so you know what he looks like here is a picture from Clive Davis' big pre-Grammy shindig:

Katharine McPhee, Corte Ellis and Nate "Danja"Hills

Corte Ellis and Danja co-wrote four of the songs on the album together.

Kat with Danja and Nena in the studio from the EPK DVD photo montage.

Katharine, Nena and Nate Hills  and a bunch of DanjaHandz employees.

^Oh, that was Danja then. Thanks for the correction, CRB. Who was the guy they showed talking with Kat during 'Love Story' and various other segments? He's the one sitting there when Kat breaks into 'Hello My Baby' and giving those musical directions when Kat was stuck on how to tackle a phrase in 'LS.' I recognize The Underdogs, of course (some cool dancing Kat does there) and everybody else.

One thing I mentioned on Kat's MySpace about this the other day: Some segments were taken from this and used on various shows in maybe the wrong context. The most glaring is the part where Kat talks about "Not being all that innocent...at all." If you watch that segment here in full picture and better sound--she points out she wanted a line changed in 'Do You What You Do' because it was too racy. Then one of the Underdogs mutters off to the side: "Yeah, she likes it sexy..." or something close. That's when Kat says that she's really not all that innocent...even if it's not really all that serious. When they used this clip on the entertainment mag shows (and even Rachael Ray) they just played that quote alone without any context. When you see it in full, you realize that (in reality) Kat's still much more innocent than anybody else in the music business. Perhaps Roger W. put that clip out just to make it appear that Kat's edgy. This DVD proves that she's very much a fun-loving girl who just happens to be a good and decent one besides. Nobody's 100% innocent anyway...despite there being gradations to that in every person.

This press kit is pure brilliance and shows Kat the way she was meant to be seen. Somehow, though, I have a feeling RCA will lend a deaf ear to our pleas to get this released commercially to a wide audience. Just because it's something 19 Entertainment can't market easily...they'll probably pass. Those marketing cop outs are huge frustrations coming from entertainment companies like this who just go by the book when it comes to putting products out that provide the most maximum profit.

That was my first time going from DVD to PC. Have never tried the other way. Just google it.

Google: "how do I burn a vob file to dvd" (Google speaks proper English too)

Gets over a million hits but probably only the first few hundred are relevant.

A thought....wouldn't a "making of ..." vid like this go well with a DVD of Kat's future tour. I find the auxilliary items on a concert DVD, like an interview to questions asked of the star and technical aspects of producing the show absolutely fascinating stuff like this one!

This Video right here, 20 MINUTES ALL OF KATHARINE MCPHEE! is a keeper. I loved this video! It was so incredible seeing the ways that they wanted to have "Ordinary World" It really is a beautiful site to see Kat in that studio right up to the mic, singing from within her heart, a song as heavenly and angelic as "Ordinary World" And from watching this, I did not know that "Do what you Do" was a last minute song, that's probably why it's my least favorite on the album even though I do listen to it. From watching this I also was convinced that the back-up vocals were also Kat. It's just amazing how Kat can make her voice have a sound in many variations of tone. Her personality in the video, ADORABLE, cute, fun, goofy, sweet and just her fun-loving, natural natured beautiful self. The photoshoots in the video, GORGEOUS as ever. For the people that found her Wal-mart single cover and her Album Cover as "slutty" need to watch this video. When you see the actual place where these shots were taken at, they are not at all as bad as some people described, in fact I think they look normal.

Once again excellent video, quality could be better but I'm not complaining.

Hey DiehardKatfan I agree, and since not everyone wants to deal with that huge VOB file trippy11 put up I decided to use the avi.NET tool that differentlife told Big Shady about in the Grove Christmas thread and make a better version.  My goals here were simple:

1.  Make a file that holds up to full screen viewing on a good-sized monitor.

2. Get the quality as close to the source VOB file as possible.

3. Keep it small enough that it can be uploaded to SendSpace without resorting to a split archive.

With these goals in mind I created a 267 MB version that I think meets those criteria quite nicely.  Here are the specs:

Video: DivX 5 640x480 29.97fps 1821 Kbps [Main 0]
Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 128Kbps [Audio  1]

And here is the link

Oh geez, now I don't know what to do.  Hold on to the ginormous vob file or swap it for this one.  And on top of that I also have trippy's converted one as well.

Your best bet would be make a Big Shady AVI conversion of the VOB yourself and keep that.  It is MPEG2 with a PCM audio stream ( in other words highly compressible) and the AVI.net  program converts it quite nicely.  Without the 300MB limit that I had to get it on SendSpace you could make a better file that would like be half the size the huge VOB file.  If you have a DVD burner your could just burn the VOB onto one, if you don't want to toss it.

I've got all three files  plus the HJsplit pieces of the VOB too.

How to burn a DVD from VOB

Here's one way to do it
-1- Author the DVD from a VOB
-2- Create an image of the DVD
-3- Burn the image onto a DVD

Result:
A basic DVD (without menus) playable o
n at least one standalone player

Details below.
It's a good idea to keep the original VOB.

----------

~~AUTHOR DVD~~

SOFTWARE NEEDED
  VOBedit:

  IFOedit:

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS to author DVD
"How to author & burn a DVD from VOB trailers/files"
    http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=120021

*The DVD produced this way was playable by my software and by my standalone DVD recorder
*The DVD might not be 100% compatible.
*I recommend keeping original copies of VOBs, which of course you already have from your original DVD.

Follow the guide up to the point where it says you are ready to burn
At that point, you have a VIDEO_TS folder containing VOB(s), IFO(s), and BUP(s)

You can use commercial software to burn the VIDEO_TS directly (recommended)
Or you can use the freeware below

You mean Stage 6 isn't recognizing that the current DivX  viewer is installed, or, if you are using Internet Explorer,  look for a yellow bar at the top of your browser window asking to allow Stage 6 to "install an Active-x control"  or some such gibberish and "allow" it.  This should allow you to watch at Stage 6.  Here is a direct download link for the video, though (right click and save as (409 MB)):

http://video.stage6.com/1199713/.divx

I think that should work independent of the viewer.
