I don't think I remember any time in recent memory the whole world being involved in such a communal event than the book release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." When you realize that it even sold like hotcakes (or is that harrycakes?) in unexpected places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan...you know you're seeing something unlike anything before.

With all the media we have--I've always found it a shame that everybody is usually off absorbing their own piece of media somewhere in the world rather than watching or reading something concurrently. It happens occasionally on TV with the Oscars and the Super Bowl...but even that's starting to wane somewhat. It's never happened with a book release that I know of in the history of printed books other than the Bible itself. I just wish we could have more events like this where everybody absorbs a major pop culture event as one rather than going off and doing our own thing all the time. I'm Gen-X, but still remember the tail-end of the three-network universe before cable started. Back then, everybody watched the same thing on TV. In movies, there were usually only three good movies playing. That meant you'd be likely to run into your friends or neighbors going to the same movie on a given night at your local multiplex bunker ( a movie theatre term that's never changed ).  This is something we'll likely never see again in the book world anyway.

In any case, I'll likely be writing about this topic I'm gestating here in an article at Associated Content this coming week...so I'll give a link at MySpace soon.

As far as the "Deathly Hallows" book--this is the first time a children's book has actually given me chills. The powerful pop culture aspects of the book really resonates with just about anybody now. The ending may be too perfect in some people's minds--but a children's book has never had a dark, tragic ending. Jo Rowling made everything fair and square...while showing how to cope with the dark realities of life sometimes. That's really the ultimate lesson from the entire series--if also (from the author's perspective...because JKR has had personal loss) keeping your imagination as you grow up and not letting the stresses of adulthood make you lose your sense of imagination.

Edit: The topic title should have an "of" in there if a mod could take care of that...

Who says they're children's books? I love them. My library is re-opening tonight so I'm going to reserve my copy and hope I don't see any spoilers before then.

I actually had a "I knew it all along" sorta vibe with Snape's thing

Don't forget, we're all human.. give what you want to receive... a smile, a thought, a tear, joy, pain, whatever it be.. you give it, you receive it.

Just finished it.
SPOILERS BELOW

I was pretty sure Snape was going to be one of the good guys. But I still have a question. If Dumbledore's friend whose name I can't remember except it was full of G's had access to the Elder Wand, why didn't he blast hell out of Dumbledore during their duel? Wasn't it supposed to be unbeatable? He must have already had it by that time, no? Because if he was defeated and the wand passed to Dumbledore, that's how he came into possession of it. But how did he manage that? Am I missing something or is that a little breach of logic there. And I was very distressed at the passing of both Hedwig and Lupin, who was one of my favorite characters. Not sure why, I just liked him. I like the way he proved that you can be cursed without being damned. You do the best you can with what life's handed you.
