Dear Katharine McPhee:

Hi-ya, Kat! How's your Wednesday's going? Excellent, I hope. Anyway, I just wanted to stop by the letter writing forum and sincerely congratulate you on a magical performance of "Over The Rainbow" on last night's spirited episode of "American Idol." Thank you so much for bringing your A-game and reminding A.I. voters why you genuinely love to sing. Your gentle and elegant rendition of "Over The Rainbow" touched by humble heart. Not to mention, numerous fans and A.I. viewers all-around the world! Whenever I listen to that classic song, I'm always transported back to my early childhood memories of first watching "The Wizard of Oz" and Dorothy wishing on a Kansas farm. Then, in my college years, I recall the Harry Nilsson version from writer/director Nora Ephron's romantic comedy "You've Got Mail." In my opinion, A.I. judge Simon Cowell gave you the most creative vocal gift: A universal song that all dreamers and idealists can relate to (regardless of age, gender, background, or occupation).

Yesterday afternoon, I finally read TV Guide Magazine's "American Idol" cover story (pgs. 8-12) on "you," Elliott Yamin, and Taylor Hicks. I think it's sweet that you're not afraid to feed or kiss animals such as horses and parrots.

All the radiant magazine photographs accurately capture your natural beauty, Kat. It's so cool how you glide open arms in a heavenly white dress! I completely understand and respect your candid quote about physical appearance and insecurities: "I've definitely struggled with body-image stuff. But now I'm more confident." It's a significant real life issue for women as well as men. Trust me, Kat. Women don't exactly go "weak in the knees" the second I walk in the room. Still, I do believe a good heart, mind, and soul surpasses society's superficial view of judging a person solely based on his/hers exterior. The substantial character eventually wins. Bear in mind: God created human beings to be unique (inside and out).

By the way, I also read that you have a steady boyfriend who gave you a crystal heart necklace in L.A. Good for you! I'm very happy you have someone special in your life. The Al Green song title sums it up best: "Love Is A Beautiful Thing." Nowadays, I'd rather see people blissfully and mutually in love instead of heartbroken, rejected, or lonely. I'm NOT a pessimist.

FYI: I voted for you approximately three times following the live one-hour A.I. broadcast, Kat! I kept getting a busy signal which it turns out is a positive sign! If all goes well on tonight's results show, you'll be joining Taylor Hicks or Elliott Yamin on next week's "American Idol" finale at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. I'm really proud of you for going the distance! This is your "Rocky" moment! You may whistle film composer Bill Conti's triumphant theme. Just kidding!

Well, it's time for me to make a modest stage right exit. Thank you (once again) for reading my midweek letter and I hope you've found inspiration and optimism in my words. I'll be praying for you and your family in the audience, Kat. You can count on it! Stay strong, Miss McPhee!

Most cordially,

Clint C.
