"Plus TVBytheNumbers is now listing Smash as "Certain to be renewed"!!!"
Oh frabjous day, calloo! callay! he shortled in his joy. Please excuse excessive chortling but this is now the first thing I do after feeding the cats on Tuesday mornings--check the Smash ratings. So if they went up on a rerun week, maybe they will at least stabilize next week, which has kind of been the goal all along, no? Get into some kind of groove and stay there? I can't imagine what they're going to do next year if they work out all the kinks in Marilyn this year, but that's not my problem, it's Theresa Rebeck's. By that time, regular viewers will be so invested in the characters they won't care what they're doing. I hope.
And when you take into consideration that a lot of people watch later via DVR, or On Demand, or some of the sites that show episodes that I don't even know about, PLUS all the people watching misc. snippets because the previews and promos are everywhere, this show must be getting all kinds of watchers who don't even register officially. The awareness level is pretty high, kind of like asking how many people have actually seen Santa Claus--but everyone knows who he is. God, my mind is going... |

Daylight Savings Time hits on Sunday morning, so the earlier shows will take a hit, while the 10pm shows usually escape mostly unscathed. Smash is up against the Bachelor "After the Rose" show, which tends to do similar to Idol and Voice numbers, and a H50 repeat, so I think the demo will take a hit, depending on whether the Voice takes a hit, especially in their 9:30 half-hour. |

Bubble shows are those that on "One the bubble" for being kept or cancelled. No idea the origin of the phrase - can bubble to the top or burst it's bubble, I guess. |

Boston #s for last night
HH
6.5 Rating and 12 Share
18-49 Demo
3.4 Rating and a 9 share
It was second to the Bachelor After The Rose. Just as much as I have no idea why people like DWTS I can't for the life of me understand why folks like The Bachelor. Still good consistant #s for Smash |

It appears by the early info that ratings will drop by about 9% . Viewers probably around 7 million. I believe 7 million is going to around the number it will reach on a weekly basis. If it can do that then a second season is almost certain. It is NOT going to be the SMASH hit we woulld have liked, however this type of show had a limited audience no matter how great it is. I am actually enjoying the show more the last couple of weeks, but it is not " breakthru " tv as was advertised. It has given Katharine a national stage to showcase her talents. As posted earlier I just hope her role increases substantially in the remaining episodes and that she hits at least one song " out of the park ". Debra Messing tweeted about a week ago that one of Katharine's performances had them all in tears. It would have to be from ep 13 or 14. One great singing performance could and I repeat could greatly increase her recogniton as a singer and thus have the potential in help the sales of her 4th album. Anticipation is what Katharine needs for her next album. There has to be a larger audience that will just be waiting for the release of the album. JMO |

Very solid consistant #s for last night nationally. Even up against stronger competition it went up a tenth from the finals last week.
I think it is not a stretch at all but more like a certainty that Smash will get renewed for next season. I believe the announcement may come fairly soon actually considering this is the last week of shooting and they will want to lock folks in for season 2 if they aren't already. |

uplink, the actors are on contract, so they're already locked in, thus NBC doesn't have to make an announcement soon because of that. But March through May is about the time that most renewals and cancellations are announced, so I would expect to start seeing such announcements in the next few weeks.
And the numbers were down from last week, though they may adjust in the finals. The demo dropped about .3

I'm trying to figure out how to find these figures and tvbythenumbers was the first thing I found, although navigating the site proved a bit challenging.
"NBC again won the night with adults 18-49 and total viewers led by The Voice, but its season low 5.1 adults 18-49 rating may have been whacked by Daylight Savings Time too, it was down 18% vs. a 6.2 rating last week. The half hour ratings for The Voice were: 4.5, 5.1, 5.3, 5.4. Smash fell to a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, down 11% vs. a 2.7 rating last week."
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/03/13/tv-ratings-monday-the-voice-alcatraz-hit-series-lows-the-bachelor-falls-to-finale-low/124197/
Can we say by this time they've fallen into a fairly steady groove of somewhere midway between 2-3 with viewership of around 7 million? Not counting people who catch it at a later date or DVR it for later viewing. |

Groucho, go to the TVBythe numbers home page and it is updated throughout the day. Overnights usually come in around 11:30 am eastern time and the finals sometimes around 5pm

I used that link and clicked on the top story, which took me to where I was the last time. The first time I tried it, I tried searching the site by typing something in their search cel and that ws very confusing. Does it show ratings for the previous day every day? What if you want to look up something from, say, the week before? Or two days before? |

True the actors are but I'm also talking writers, production staff etc. They don't sign those 7 year deals like many actors do. The sooner the announcement is made the better to keep the staff they want to keep. But there is also a PR aspect to announcing earlier for the bigger "hits". Some shows have been renewed already. Let's face it. Smash is a top 2-3 show for NBC right now so I would really expect them to announce it soon. I expectthe "upfront" in May to be heavy for Smash, touting it as a big hit for the network.
Also you are righ about the #s. I forgot that it went up big against repeats last week and was thinking about the last week of sweeps. |

Click on the "More Ratings" tab and then the subcatagories will show up like Broadcast Overnights and Broadcast finals. Then you scroll through till you find the day you want. |

Groucho, you can also click on "All Posts" in the top left of the page and scroll through the articles for the various days for preliminary ratings and final ratings, along with other articles. The All Posts tab will show you all the stories for 2012. If you search on "ratings" it should mostly pull up ratings articles. Search on "Smash ratings" should show you all the articles that talk about ratings and Smash. uplink's suggestion to click on the "More Ratings" tab will get you similar results, though probably more directly. Final results for Monday, Smash 2.4 in the demo, 7.04 million viewers; no change in the demo, but slightly down in viewers from the preliminary numbers. |

Speaking of the notion that NBC should announce renewals like RIGHT NOW, CBS just announced renewals for about 15 shows but they're the first to do it this year. According to a Deadline article from the end of last month, last season renewals started being announced around the beginning of February, but none of the networks had announced yet by the date of the article. They seem to be taking their time this year. |

Okay, here it is. Not spectacular but pretty steady. NBC was second for the entire evening, after ABC, and pretty much ahead in the 18-49 category, if I'm reading everything right. It looks almost like one of those horse races where all 3 horses' heads are right together, except one nostril is flared out beyond the others. Total viewership down from around 7 to 6.67? I think they said The Voice took a bit of a hit and it seems to still carry Smash with it to some degree.
10:00 CBS Hawaii Five-0 2.5/6 9.14
ABC Castle 2.4/6 11.86
NBC Smash 2.3/6 6.67
Here's the link, go double check me

I don't know if anything other than the overnight ratings matter. Because I was wondering if there are numbers for those households who DVR the show and watch it later. Also, SMASH is being shown around the world. Do those numbers matter too. Speaking of which, is there a source that can be checked for ratings outside the U.S.? As far as DVR is concerned I was upset when I originally heard that SMASH would be on Mondays at 10. Because my two favorite shows, Hawaii-50 and Castle are at the same time. So I watch SMASH, DVR Castle, watch Hawaii-50 ON-DEMAND later in the week. I'm sure those numbers count for something at some point.

Luckiestar, more and more, advertisers and networks are using Live+3 Day ratings (or the commercial watching equivalent), which includes DVR use by Nielsen families, to set ad rates, instead of just Live + Same Day (up until 3 am the next morning). Live + 7 Day ratings (which also includes DVR use from Nielsen families) is mostly for bragging rights, but they might actually be close to Live + 3 Day numbers. As for international ratings, the numbers matter in terms of keeping the show on in those countries. It doesn't seem easy to find those numbers except for the occasional article that talks about how the show is doing in a particular country. As for watching On-Demand, it doesn't count in the Nielsen ratings, but networks probably look at it to gauge interest. |

If I thought On Demand watching counted for something, I might almost be tempted to watch Smash there and watch Lost Girl live, except that it's so hard not to watch until the next day! And with cable I can't tape one channel and watch another anymore. Used to, can't anymore. come to think of it, I watch it on On Demand anyway. I need at least 3 views before I pick up everything and hear all the lines right. |

Thanks DALKI, great explanation. I guess as long as the advertisers know the full or true ratings numbers, that's all that matters. Especially in the 18-49 demographic. Good to know. Thanks again. |

Smash has been doing well in the Live + 7 Day numbers, going up in the demo from the Live + Same Day numbers more than 30% each week. |

WTH? The numbers keep getting better every time I read something. But in the day of VCR's and DVR's etc. it makes sense to know who's watching even in the days after airing. Even though people can FF through commercials, so advertisers might not be as impressed, it still tells you something, doesn't it? Besides, On Demand makes you sit through at least part of the commercials, although not quite as many as watching it first-run.
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118051793
There's more but this is specifically what I was talking about:
"Nurturing "Smash" has been NBC's primary focus this season, as the Peacock lavished the show with a generous marketing budget and the best launch pad on its sked, the Monday 10 p.m. slot following "The Voice." It ranks as NBC's top drama in the 18-49 demo, averaging 9.6 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/9 share in the demo, according to Nielsen data that includes full-week DVR playback where applicable. " |

NBC ahead in the 18-49 demo, which seems to be the biggie to advertisers, although lagging in total viewers. But its numers seem to be pretty consistent, even if not great. I guess we don't need to obsess quite as much over this now.
10:00PM ABC Castle 2.4 6 12.150
NBC Smash 2.2 6 6.355
CBS Hawaii Five-0 -R 1.6 4 6.566
Scoreboard (this did not carry over quite right, but NBc is the first set of numbers)
nbc abc cbs ? fox cw
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 3.7/10 2.9/8 1.9/5 1.5/4 1.5/4 0.4/1
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 2.9/9 1.5/5 1.1/3 1.5/5 1.0/3 0.4/1
