Hicks, McPhee lead Idol invasion in Columbia

Here are my “best of” choices from the concert at the Colonial Center, because all 10 singers really are stars (at least to the more than 12,000 fans at the arena Wednesday night):

Best performance: A tie between Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee. Hicks’ entrance, walking through the arena aisles while he sang “Jailhouse Rock,” was grand (his harmonica solo was almost as good), as was McPhee’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”

Plus McPhee, who had missed the first three weeks of the tour with severe bronchitis and laryngitis, was singing after fracturing her foot Tuesday night.

*-~-* KaThArInE! *-~-*- Ok..... here comes MY American Idol..i seen her shadow or whatever barely at the top of the stage and i went CRAZY AND I MEAN CRAZY! I was screamin so much and so loud..that people were laughing at me..LoL..i just laughed with them..(whenever i wouldnt screamin).....and people down below me were turnin around and lookin at me..i mean..i was going WILD!!!!! And she was HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT by the way!!!!!! Well she did Black Horse and a Cherry Tree...and u could tell that she wasn't belting it out as usual..but she was defintely rockin that song! Then she told how she missed the first couple weeks of the tour..and did SOTR and it was INCREDIBLE! And i went crazy again! And I mean people were goin crazy 2..not like insain(like me.....LoL) but people were showin her some support..defintely! I was really happy 2 see that!

Oh my God. It's time for Katharine... This isn't just her first time to the stage tonight. It's her first time to the stage the entire freaking Idol tour.  All I hear is the "2! 3! 4!" and I start freaking out. "It's Katharine! AAAAHHH!" You could tell from the crowd reaction as she took the stage to sing KT Tunstall's Black Horse and the Cherry Tree that her presence was greatly missed. You could also tell from her vocals on the song that her cords were still strained. She was noticeably holding back and at times it was hard to tell if she was even actually singing. But give the girl a break--she had laryngitis AND bronchitis. Despite the okay performance, Katharine finished the song to applause and cheers. People just kept going. The cheering didn't end.

She wiped away tears and thanked everyone for their support as well as apologized for her absence. Katharine told us that the doctor's orders are that she can only sing 2 songs, and that the second song will be Somewhere Over The Rainbow (surprise, surprise right?). This song went much, much better, and her rendition is as beautiful as ever.

Continuing to hold back a little,  her a capella "When all the clouds...darken up the skyway, there's a rainbow highway to be found" still took me out of the crowd and into McHeaven. Katharine's return was clearly one of the events of the night..

But that's the thing about "Idol" -- the TV show and this tour, which is basically an extension of the show. Fans love it because they created these "stars" and are invested in their futures. They aren't too concerned that their voices are subpar; they just want to be entertained.

Kat was a gamer. She started “Black Horse & Cherry Tree” on her knees, like the show, then got up and gingerly went down the ramp as we all cringed, wondering if she’d fall or trip. She didn’t. She wore a long black dress that hid her left foot and the black boot but she showed it to the crowd partway through. She then did “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” apologizing that she could only do two songs, doc’s orders. She sounded a bit rough on a couple of high notes but did a passable job considering her vocal condition.

American idol runner up Katharine McPhee may have just won over some reluctant fans in the south.  The gorgeous LA girl is finally on the Idol's live tour and on Tuesday night dedicated her signature song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to fellow idol performer Kellie Pickler.

She wins over the crowd by dedicating the arena and the stage to "hometown girl" Kellie Pickler and brings her on stage and gives away the 'secret' that the performers sometimes sit in the audience and watch the show. She brings Kellie to tears.

    It was awesome... I will just tell the stuff that I haven't read from the other posts on attending the concerts.. Katharine dedicated Over the Rainbow to Kellie... She had said that they loved watching each other perform and said that Kellie was in the crowd watching her..

    She proceeded to pull Kellie from the audience, she was sitting in the front row with a black hoodie on, and Katharine said that's what they wore when watching each other... Kellie made a joke saying that now Kat gave away their disguise (if you do go to a concert, look for black hoodies it could be the idols)... Anyway Katherine began to sing Over the Rainbow and Kellie started to cry.. it was sooo touching... Katherine at one time went and sat beside of Kellie on the stage floor and they were both singing together... it was very sweet...

Kat's voice sounds strong, sitting out was probably a wise choice. She looks fantastic.

After the boys left the stage, Kat came out, broken foot and all, in a long black dress which hid any sort of evidence of cast or brace she had on her foot. She was walking around the stage (no running) and began by singing Black Horse and the Cherry Tree which really got the crowd going and was great vocally.

After this she bantered a bit about how se loved Florida and how it was so beautiful. She said she was still on mild vocal rest, so she could only sing one more song. She then got a stool and sat for her now famous rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The crowed went NUTS, and it was good, but not really different from the cd. Yet I can’t fault her for being consistent, so it was still great.

...."The tour has been plagued by problems, though. Katharine missed a number of dates, claiming laryngitis. Then, last Tuesday, she fractured her left foot tripping backstage. The elegant young Californian hobbled a bit Saturday and noted she was ''still on doctor's orders'' to save her voice so limited her time to two songs -- the rapidly grating Black Horse and the Cherry Tree but a sublime Over the Rainbow.

I didn't have a camera cause I didn't know I'd be seeing her lol. She's the only one I talked to. It wasn't a very long convo. Just a little exchange as she passed by me. SHE was the one that came up and talked to ME though! I first saw her come in about 5 minutes after I did. She was with 2 other people, I don't know who they were. She was limping pretty good. She signed into the office and came to the waiting room and sat down. She looked over and saw me and smiled at me. They called me back to the cast room pretty soon after that. They were gonna take her to the cast room too at first but they decided to give her her own room for privacy. I didn't see her again until we started to leave. I was sitting in the hall on the way to the appointment desk. She walked by me and smiled again when she saw me. As she got close to me she looked down and saw my foot and got a sad look on her face like she was sorry I was hurt. She asked what happened. I told her I had surgery because I was born with a crooked foot so they straightened it out. She did that puppy dog sad face she does and said "aaawww I'm sorry. I hope you get to feeling better soon!" I said "Thanks. I hope you feel better soon too!" She turned around and smiled at me again and said "Thank you!" and walked off. She's awesome! I can now say for a 100% fact she does NOT have an attitude problem. I found that completely cool that she actually talked to me before I even got a chance to talk to her.

Here's a Birmingham review from KFF25 at IDF:

Hey McPhans! I wanna tell you all about the concert tonight! It was at the BJCC Arena in Birmigham, AL. 19,000 ppl were seated. I will go ahead and say I got my backstage passes from Kats mother. We got there about 4:00 and waited around. Paris walked out of the bus and I got some good pics up close of her cause she was like rite there. After we saw her we went around to the front of the building to see if we could get our backstage passes. Just me and my mom went, but Peisha gave us FIVE passes and tickets! We sold 2 of both for $100. The ppl we sold them to hung around w/ us till we left. Very nice ppl. When we walked into the building I was just in total shock of what I just got, we went to the bathroom to calm down and then we went to find our seats. Mandisa started the show and during her 3rd performance the tour manager came up to us and said Peisha had made a mistake, they were suppose to give us the four tickets instead of five, so we had to move. We had perfect seats. Ace came out next and while he was singing the ppl we sold the stuff to went back to talk to someone and they told us to move back were we were cause there was no one sittin there for some reason. We got some awesome pictures of all of em! Earlier i posted a topis called TODAY and it taled bout me posting the pics on myspace. Yes im gonna do that, but i cant even put them on my computer yet cause w have to wait to show my stepdad, he mite get on 2morow and see them (we dont want that to happen yet : ) I should have them uploaded 2morow night or Thursday. I will post my address to get there as soon as i do. But anywayz (back to the concert). After it was over... all the ppl w/ baclstage passes (actually called After Show Party) met up in front of a row. We had to wait like 20 min till they let us back there. The first person that we saw was Mandisa. I got every single one of there autograph in my book i bought at the concert except Kellie cause she had lost her voice. Katharine and I talked off and on the whole time I was back there. She told me to tell you all Thank-you and shes love you. Hah, it was funny cause she asked me if I was an internet girl and i was like yeah. Then she asked whats my favorite site and I said Idolforums. Then she said I dont think i've ever been there, i have only looked at a few but i never get on them anymore cause of the ppl. (she wasnt bein mean, you should all know what she means, the stupid ppl gettin on and talkin trash, she hates that). She gave me so many hugs that I lost count. I asked her when we get an album and she said no earlier that November. She said after the tour she is gonna rest and be staring in a few films. After about 30 min. a few idols left, when Kat left she kinda stopped at the door to sign a lil girls arm, i kinda ran over there and she was like Thank-you again sweetie and I gave her a hug. She was like ooh shes a devoted fan ( i was like aawwww, as soon as i asked my mom what that meant lol). Dreams really do come true! It was my dream to meet Katharine McPhee. I told her when she comes on tour to come here and she promised me she would! So when we ever get a tour date from Katharine be sure it says Huntsville or Birmigham Alabama! Everyone that has met her should feel so great about themselves and her! She is such a sweetie and such a great person to talk to! Till that moment on... I will never forget this day that I met Katharine McPhee!

p.s. I wanna thank personaly the Kat Pack and McPhans that are here. You are the ones that got her where we all wanted her to be! Thank you so much and form the bottom of my heart... I love you all and good night!

Well!!! i must say that last night was one of THE most amazing nights EVER! i just love katharine mcphee! ha

N-E-way! we had GREAT seats, and when we got in there, melissa mcghee sat 2 rows in front of me and her mom was right behind me, so we chatted a little--melissa was really sweet. okay okay, moving on to the most IMP. part of the evening--KAT! [Smile]

okay, so i had after party passes, and let me tell you...i was so excited you do not even know! i realized after the fact that i hadn't eaten anything but a breakfast sandwich and 2 diet cokes the entire day and night--but i nibbled on a few crackers on the way home from tampa...ha hey, after Kat was gone, i could focus on other things and i realized i was hungry...haha!

OKAY, so, first all the rest performed...blah blah...then you hear..."whooo-hoooo" and the crowd goes CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY! i have the video, but it's 113MB and every site will only let me upload 100MB...problem is that it kept recording for about 10 seconds longer than needed, so i am trying to figure out how to edit it and get those 10 seconds off so i can post it...until i do that, it's kat singing BHCT & SOTR and a LOT of screaming in the backround--there is also a little blurb where she is talking about her memories of tampa from when she studied there for 2 summers while in high school. if you want to see it, e-mail me at dreamnbelieve1@aol.com and i will just e-mail it to you, until i can figure out how to edit this thing--i have tried everything that i can think of at this point, so that's the next best option. anyway, when she was on stage, i was so excited that i was seeing her LIVE that i didn't notice how many people were actually freaking out during her performance! she was DEFINITELY well-received in tampa, THAT'S for sure! i DO have a few clips from the finale that i will post however--she looked as if she was hobbling a bit more during the finale, and probably in pain, but she's a trooper and you could BARELY tell the rest of the show that she was in a boot!

okay, SO, after the show, danielle and i went to the afterparty--no kellie and no elliot--both evidently under the weather--kellie didn't perform--laryngitis--doctor's orders--no talking. she WAS at the meet and greet but she left at intermission, or so we were told. right before intermission, bucky brought her out to wave to everybody in her hoodie and sweatpants--she was cute. i am all over the place with this post, huh? ha

okay, so we go backstage and first paris comes in...i am watching...watching...in suspense...where's kat??? in comes mandisa, ace...okayyyyy *tapping fingers on the table, whereeeee is kat?* HERE SHE COMES! yay kat! haha i am a dork. okay, so kat was sitting at a table, for obvious reasons. we made a beeline straight over to her, since obviously that was the only reason IIIII was there! [Smile] she's absolutely gorgeous, flawless, however you want to say, she's it! we chatted smalltalk for a few minutes and we felt like we were hogging her from the others, and she's like, nooooooo, come on now! and kept talking--she was signing, talking, taking pics--she was such a sweetheart! you almost feel like you are pals with them, just chatting about nothing--it was very cool for us, even though they meet like 1000s of fans on this tour. i was trying to be cool of course--i didn't want to see like one of those fanatic freaks that we are all afraid of, so i kept cool...don't remember half of it, but i kept cool...ha i just HOPE i told her what an amazing job she did out there--she is so incredibly talented--it's no wonder she takes her dad's breath away every time she sings--she's simply A-MA-ZING...in every sense of the word...that's truly it. i didn't want to sit there and say, hey kat, did you get this, or that, because i am sure she has received SOOOOOOO many things from fans, that i just wanted to talk to her, not ask her if she received things from me, ya know? there were so many things i wanted to say, but i don't think i said half of them! ha i thought about them though--after the fact...oh well--hopefully there will be more times in the future to hang and chat with K-Dawg...ha...and next time i will have to make a list! [Tongue]

i DO have to say, that the security guard that was there--you will NOT be able to miss him if you are going to the concert...he is ALLLLLLLL over her!!! not in a gross way, but just very pushy and authoritative and way too overprotective. i mean it's awesome that they are protected...that kat is anyway...the others were totally on their own, wandering around sitting with fans, chatting! anyway, one girl called a friend and asked kat to talk, and she took the phone and say HEEEY! and then that guard was right on her--she can't talk on cell phones! but about 5 feet away you have ace talking up a storm to some fan on the phone and even recorded a little video clip for another fan who wasn't there. it was just a little odd if you ask me. i was just SO excited to meet and chat with kat, that i was happy. [Smile] she's such a sweet girl--very real--who couldn't love her???? i just don't get that at all!

i think that's all for now...i am just so grateful to have had this opportunity--it was just...A-MA-ZING...did i mention that??? ha

can't wait to read all the rest of the recaps--wish i could be at her homecoming--man that's going to be an awesome show--she'll hopefully be singing everything by then!

Well, about my meeting with Kat. As you know, she was in Birmingham, Alabama for a concert on the 8th. They actually arrived there on the 6th or 7th. On the 7th I had a doctor's appointment to check on the foot I had surgery on a couple of months ago. About 5 minutes after I got there, 3 people walked in. One of them was limping. The limping person was Kat! I don't know who the other 2 people were. I think only one of them was with her. My jaw dropped... I looked at my mom, who was there with me, and said "I swear that looks like Katharine McPhee!" and about that time it hit me that Kat had recently hurt her foot and they were in town for the concert. I knew then it was her. My mom didn't believe it was her. Kat finished signing in at the desk and came to the waiting room to sit down. She saw me sitting in the corner and we smiled at each other as she sat down but didn't say anything to each other. The nurse called me to the cast room soon after that. When I got to the cast room I heard a couple of nurses talking about putting her in the cast room where I was but they decided they would give her her own room for privacy reasons. They were also talking about how she's so sweet and even more beautiful in person than on tv. I told my mom what they had said, she still didn't believe it was her. Soon after that, a few guys who worked there came in talking about how much of a sweetheart she is. I looked at mom and said "I told you it was her!" My mom looked stunned and told the guys "It is not! Is it really!" They confirmed it was her. I never saw her again until I started to leave. On my way to the appointment desk Kat and a bunch of the people who worked at the office were standing down the hall. My mom went to say something to one of the workers and as they were walking back to me, Kat walked down the hall to me on her way out. We were smiling at each other the whole time she walked to me. She got to within about 2 feet of me and said "Excuse me" to get by me out the door, then looked at my foot and gave that adorable sad puppy dog face she does as if she was sad I was hurt and said "Awwwww what happened". I told her I had surgery to straighten out my foot cause I was born with it crooked. She gave me the sad puppy dog look again said "Awwww I'm sorry. I hope you feel better soon!" I said "Thank you! I hope you feel better soon too!" She turned around and smiled at me and said "Thank you!" and walked off, and that was it. She's awesome. I thought that was really cool that SHE actually came up to ME instead of the other way around! She's a great person and FLAWLESSLY gorgeous!

......Katharine!!  right when the lights went off all you could see were millions of glowsticks and cell phones. it was a really cool sight. about 10 seconds later "two, three, four!" and the lights shined and then a million camera flashes went off! she looked so amazing! she had on a black dress to the floor and just looked stunning. i cannot even describe the feeling of seeing her in person!!! i was so busy taking pictures and singing and dancing! the crowd was crazy during that song!
after that kat told everyone about having laryngitus and missing 3 weeks of the tour and how sorry she was, but it was doctors orders. then she said "okay..and..i had a little clumsy moment!" and then lifted her dress to her knee and lifted her foot up! it was so cute! everyone got a laugh out of that one because she said she was runing backstage! she explained she could only sing 2 solo songs, doctors orders.
AND! during the silent part right after the started talking i screamed as loud as i could "I LOVE YOU KATHARINE!!!!" and she waved in my direction and gave a huge smile! that was awesome!!  she sang "somewhere over the rainbow" and it was so BEAUTIFUL!  the clearest song of the night...it was perfect. they did close ups  on her face the whole time and she looked absoutely stunning. when she was done with the song the applause were very, very long! 

then kat and taylor come out doing their grind dance in the middle of the upper stage (like usual) in the song "living in america"  it was very fun and i loved everyone together on stage. at the end of the song they danced off stage. then they came back and bowed and names were said while everyone was cheering. it was amazing! it was the best concert ever.

at the end i saw all of the idols getting on to the bus and i was so close to katharine again, and it was awesome! of course everyone was screaming but they had to get going. it was a 3 hour and 10 minute concert!

AMAZING concert!
all i really needed to say was "KATHARINE WAS AMAZING"!

i am posting a report on the birmingham concert i went to (i traveled)..but she was so cute with showing everyone her broken foot and dancing with it! then...i broke my foot walking out of the concert on a curb...because it was seriously 3 feet tall...i dont know why i didnt see the curb. i was so excited to just have seen her face to face so close that i was too happy to really pay attention to "life"... so i broke my foot and twisted my ankle...it was strange. i am in walking boot now, so i feel her pain of "hobbling". feel better KAT!
