Well, here is who Kat will be up against on the charts as Kat and Norah Jones are releasing their albums on the same day. Norah's 1st single off of her new album is a soulful song called "Thinking About You". Here's a streaming audio of it.

http://www.norahjones.com/NTLstream/index.htm

I really like the album cover!

Norah Jones - Not Too Late CD (Pre-Order)

Can't wait for Kat's album as well!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a nice single, although not to much in the lyrics department. I believe they will be in direct competition with each other, butI wish Katharine's label would release her single. I think Kat can beat her with something a little more upbeat.

It's not Norah's best...certainly not better than Don't Know How or Sunrise....

"I think it was the summertime when I laid eyes on you. I didn't even know your name...The boy you never wanted just steals your heart..."--Kat McPhee, Love Story

"4 walls and no you. The silence in this room is so loud...wow"--Kat McPhee, I Lost You

"I didn't see the crash that burnt the bridge, didn't see the missile that sank my loveship down..."--Kat McPhee, Dangerous

"Wanting you to be wanting me, no that ain't no way to be...You never were a friend of mine..."--Kat McPhee, Over It

"No more lonely nights to hurt me, no more tears left to spare, no more reasons to be unhappy. You threw them all up in the air..."--Kat McPhee, Each Other

"Your pedicure, white-tipped French. Your legs don't make no sense...Shoes like these make me hate flats..."--Kat McPhee, Open Toes

It's hard to beat Norah. It's ok for Kat to come in 2nd as long as her total sales are respectable..and I hope she remains in the top ten for a long time.

Some good jazz chord changes in 'Thinking About You'--though it's overall much plainer than anything Norah's done before. But it does grow on you...and means that if it charts on the AC charts (inevitably)--it'll be another jazz song in disguise on mainstream radio. That's happening a lot lately--particularly on the AC charts.

I'm sure Kat's pretty much braced herself that she won't beat Norah for the #1 position that week. But, we could be surprised, considering that it's Kat's higher-energy material vs. Norah's patented jazzy/laid back material. It'll all depend on people's moods, even though Norah attracts the older buyers.

If Kat stole the #1 position away from Norah, you'd have instant music history in the making. Though, realistically, Kat will be #2 to Norah if maybe just Top Five that week. I nevertheless still see a healthy debut for Kat...with even chances of charting higher in ensuing weeks. Kat has that sometimes delayed ability to do better after people finally "get it." Her 'OtR' single proves that theory. Plus, some albums have scooted on up to #1 in the second or third week of release, despite being rare.

For Norah, she probably doesn't even care where her album will chart considering she was nearly upset when her first album did so incredibly well that she didn't know how she could continue her career. Because of her stature, though, she's probably guaranteed #1 debuts for the rest of her life--just like Streisand and other musical legends out there who are still alive. Will Kat be in that bunch eventually? Absolutely...though I'm glad Kat keeps in mind that maybe her next album may be more likely to get her there than the first one. Outside of that thought, considering all the buzz lately, it just seems unbelievable to think that Kat won't at least have a Top Five debut on 1/30. It seems the music business places too many high expectations on the sales performances of albums when a Top Five debut should be considered extremely fortunate in a business that's more competitive than the writing business. (My own personal experience not withstanding.)

I have always loved Norah Jones, but this particular single doesn't live up to her past efforts, nor does the other track, now available on the Amazon site. Norah is #3 on the Amazon charts right now, Katharine is #485. I still like Katharine's voice better, but I think she will always be #2 to Norah (better than #2 to Taylor)

Oh, that's kind of a bummer, but it's all good.  I love Norah Jones, but her CD I'm sure will be a lot more mellow than Kat's, actually sometimes people call her Snorah Jones - she's definitely good to listen to you when you want to just "chill."  On, a positive note - I bet Amazon recommends both Norah and Kat's CDs as a suggestion to purchase them both.  That's cool that two strong female artists will be toping the charts that week!

I like Norah but my teenage daughter (16) finds her incredibly boring and her age group is who will be buying and downloading Katharine in much greater numbers if she gets that airplay and promotion she deserves. I'm not really concerned with Norah over Kat. Kat's market potential is much larger than Norah's.

Katharine has a lot more mainstream appeal than Norah Jones does.  And I respect Norah a lot.  But the kids don't get her.  The kids will get Katharine.  And that's what really drives CD sales.  Because if they didn't?  Katharine might be doing that Norah Jones/Joss Stone record she was talking about at the end of Idol.

And Katharine will be all over Top 40 radio.  Norah won't be.  Norah is Adult Contemporary.  I'm not sure what else is being released on January 30th.  OK, just checked.  Norah's the only competition for Katharine I can see.  Kat's going to debut either #1 or #2.  The only people I recognize on Jan 23rd is The Shins.  And then you've got Fall Out Boy on February 6th.  Other than that...I don't see a whole lot.

It's definitely not like what she would have faced on Nov 28th or Dec 5th.

Exactly, I'm sure the competition factor was part of the decision to push the drop to January 30th. Apparently RCA or Kat aren't overly concerned about Norah Jones.

it doesn't matter how much you are on the radio or whether younger people like you or not -- accept for endorsements. the radio doesn't pay squat (no royalties, right?), album sales and concert tickets do. If this is all about money and market then norah selling 25 million records worldwide is way bigger than kat's. we put too much emphasis on radio play, it's about posting profits. radio play is a means to that but not the end all.

and look at mario vazquez, and "Gallery." His single is getting a lot of radio play but his album flopped when everyone predicted big things for him, and he had a ton of promotion.

On amazon there is a video of a live performance of one of Norah's songs called "Rosie's Lullaby" that is going to be on the new album. I really like this song!!!!!

http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000KCHZK6/ref=pd_rvi_gw_2/102-6138742-8530544

This would be a wise move for Kat, if she were to have a music video of her single. It would definately increase sales!!!!!! Also, DVD/CD sets seem to be getting more popular...

Katharine has a lot of teenagers fans who don't use Amazon service to get music albums and singles.

Amazon customers are usually old people who usually order old known artists albums by Amazon service.

Most young music consumers don't use Amazon service. They usually buy music products at the stores.

As well I think  Amazon marketing department gets annoyed because of the exclusive sales deal of Katharine's new CD single with Wal-Mart.

Am I the only one seeing Norah Jones' "Not Too Late" at #3 on iTunes Top Albums? How's that possible? I had no idea she was that popular.

Yep, It's #3 and it is only pre-order until 1/30...... As some people have mentioned the younger generation may not "get" her music but she has a huge fan base, especially internationally. Somebody had already mentioned how it's all about the interpretation of the song and not all the "bells and whistles" that go with it. Norah's voice and her interpretation of a song can reach in and grab your soul....

I will be buying Norah and Kat's CD's at the same time so it will be even for me, but I suspect Norah will be #1 the first week with Kat in the top 5. The real test for both will be how long their albums stay in the charts against the poor quality music that everybody seems to like these days.....

Yep.  It's actually #2 now.  I had to double-check to make sure it wasn't being released early.  I saw her video this morning on VH1.  Didn't totally love the song but...I think Norah's incredibly talented.  And I'm guessing that she's #2 on ITunes pre-sales....and granted she just went up on there but still....

I think our girl might have to settle for a #2 debut.  But you never know.  If her single catches fire on Top 40 radio and her video blows up on MTV/VH1...she's the underdog to Norah right now if I was placing odds on it.

I can't see Katharine being any lower than #2 though.  There isn't much coming out on Jan 30th or the weeks before it.

I am a Norah jones fan too, I had all her songs in my library. But come Jan. 30th I'll get copies of Kat's CD first . I wouldn't worry about Norah Jones she's already an established artist. I'll get her CD maybe 2-3 weeks from Jan 30th.

Let's keep in mind that Amazon doesn't have any of Kat's tracks listed yet, nor a song to even listen to. When they do that her number will improve drastically! Her original single SOTR/MY DESTINY is back to #2 on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart! That's pretty damn impressive after 26 weeks! Once more people can hear her new music on Amazon and on TV with rescheduled appearances her numbers will soar! Also, Amazon dropped Norah's price a long time ago and it's much cheaper than Kat's. They'll probably drop Kat's soon too and that will also help sales.
