12/21/2006 5:04 AM Alert

Taylor debuts at #2 this week after selling 298,000 copies of his self-titled album.  Young Jeezy sold 352,000 for the top spot.

Fantasia checked in at #19 with her new album.  Selling 133,000.  Tough week when 133K is only #19.  Kellie was #9 at 79K her debut week.

So what's that mean.  Daughtry beat Taylor by 6,000 copies.  Let the calls of "Now we know we the real American Idol is begin."  No, I'm not talking about Katharine.  This has nothing to do with her.

They don't have the new singles sales chart up yet.  Just the story about last week's sales.

Back to this week's chart, Daughtry stays at #7 with 181,000.  I believe that takes Chris over 700,000 now in four weeks.  Mighty impressive.

And Carrie Underwood continues to amaze...57 weeks after her release she sells another 199,000 copies to move up to #6.

Just thought you might be interested in hearing that Chris beat Taylor in album sales.  And just to have those 304,000 & 298,000 numbers out there.  Granted, Katharine won't be in the Christmas/Thanksgiving rush so she likely won't get those numbers.  But something around 200,000 would be great for a late January release.  It's all about still being relevant 57 weeks later like Carrie though.  That's the important thing.  That's how you sell 3-4 million records.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

I have seen this info on the AI site and the TH folder was rather depressed yesterday. Not to bring up old wounds but I have always felt that the majority of Kat fans would have felt alot better losing to Chris than TH. We can certainly go over all that happened but it is pointless now. Even TH's fans are starting to call him a Niche performer. He will have a good career and I'm happy for him but what their numbers show is that a fan base can get dissillusioned if they believe their own hype too much.

In Kat's case I think the delay of release date was a huge plus for her. It will diminish the first week expectations a bit which is a good thing. Because as SJ points out it is all about long term sales. Look at Carrie and Kelly C for example. Some Hearts was #2 to Madonna her first week and it has now sold over twice as many copies and is still doing incredible numbers 57 weeks later. Breakaway sold 250K the first week and is now over 10 million worldwide based on 5 great hit singles. That is what we in Kat's fan base need to keep in mind. It's about long term not the first week. Having the entire marketing plan ready by the release date is crucial. Single, video all out BEFORE the date. With that and the right singles she will have success like Carrie and Kelly. Without it, it will be Ruben and Taylor.

I agree totally with uplink2. Congratulations to Taylor, great showing. Let's keep in mind that the first week is important, but it is the ultimate figure that counts. Katharine was a late bloomer with SOTR. It happens. I'm surprised at Fantasia and Ruben's numbers.

I heard the Soul Patrol was a bit bummed, but for the Love of Pete - people need to quit thinking the first week's sales are the "end all/be all" of how a CD is going to do.  Those darn Claymates have first-week record sales that can't be touched 600K + . . . and I think some of the other intense fan bases want to break it so badly.  Taylor's numbers are still good - if he gets radio play on the A/C stations he may pick up some new fans who will buy his CD.  I'm amazed at how well Chris is doing, that's awesome for him - WOW!, I guess peeps were hungry for a rocker-type CD.

If Kat gets some radio play before her CD drops, she will probably have good 1st week sales I'd say in the 250-350K range.  Also, it will be a good gauge to see who the diehard Kat Packers/McPhans are and how large her fan base is.  Kat will have slow-building sales as more and more people hear her stuff.  I definitely think Kat will be getting a lot of Top40/AC radio play she definitely will fit that niche, and it's about time for someone coming out of the AI family to do so.  Really, since Kelly C there hasn't been any of the AI alums who have been played on these stations.  Carrie has done great, but she's country and the others have been more R&B, so............ it's time for some fresh new music to hit those Top 40 charts, and Kat is waiting in the que!

I saw the iTunes download charts and Taylor's single was #6, Chris' #4. Taylor's fans have nothing to be depressed about. 298,000 units is VERY respectable. I guess they expected him to surpass Chris and everybody else. It's getting very close to Katharine's turn and we know it's a great CD, but it is a bit stressful to wait for the numbers. It seems that she will do her TV appearances, etc. AFTER the CD drops, but she should do some before the fact. She is such a good performer that some people will have to see her before they buy.

Honestly... I think the SP were probably the only people to buy the album. And I don't mean that to be rude, but he's just not a good vocalist... he's a born entertainter, but you'll never hear him on the radio for having a good voice. I do wish him all the best, but I just hope the SP isn't too disappointed because they should've seen it coming.

I agree with you too Kate. I think more than just the McPheever, the McPhans, and the Kat Pack are going to buy her album!!! When people start hearing her on the radio, they are going to hear how good she sounds. People other than American Idol fans are going to want to buy her album after they hear how good she sounds.

Kate I agree too and that is what I believe is concerning them. From where I sit unless you have drunk the SP Kool-Aid there is no reason to pick up his CD. Where as the marketing strategy for Kat will get people interested to sample and her talent and let's face it her beauty will keep them coming back for more.

Actually, I have seen numerous converts who were pleasantly surprised to hear Taylor's songs in the album for the first time. Though this I'm not sure of, there were some Katharine fans who actually liked and ended up buying his CD too.

Besides, his sales are pretty impressive, IMHO, with no radio airplay at all. I believe he's gonna have a single out on January, which will boost his sales further.

And I found this li'l piece of info on the AI boards:

The first week sales totaled over 298K...despite no dedicated single, no radio airplay and no video - the fifth-best first week total among all American Idol finalists that have released CDs.

So y'all see...With Katharine giving us little surprises here and there, I just can see  people kicking and screaming and clawing in getting ahold of Kat's CD!!!!!

Gosh, for a fansite that is nothing but Kat, y'all sure talk about Taylor a lot LOL!

Since when? The single sales count toward billboard...How is this any different?

You're the one who wondered into the "NON-KAT" portion of the site. What did you expect to find here?
