This was in today's edition of the Sunday New York Daily News.

"Idol Odd Couple"

Katharine, Chris head final 4

Katharine McPhee

Age: 21

Hometown: Sherman Oaks, California

Strengths: Gifted singer with a great stage presence.  She's got good tone and range in her voice, and she seems to get better every week

Weaknesses: May actually be too good, perhaps too polished.  Occasionally makes a really bad song selection.

Realistically:  McPhee has the goods. She's attractive, and boy can she sing.  It's between her and Daughtry for the title.

Odds: 2-1

Now, fo r the other three:

Chris Daughtry

Age 26

Home: McLeansville, North Carolina

Strengths: True rocker has conviction and is extremely earnest, Of all the finalistss, he sings the songs as if he really understands the lyrics.

Weaknesses: Almost stubborn insistence on picking growly, screamy songs.  Part of that, however, may be his limited vocal range.

Realistically: Daughtry is the real deal.  The guy has that "it" everyone talks about with celebrites, and based on his "Idol" performances it's clear he can be a star.

Odds: Even

Taylor Hicks:

Age: 29

Hometown: Brimingham, Alabama

Stregenths: There's no douvt Hicks can sing, he's proven that week after week.

Weaknesss: Goofy, drunken frat boy stage presence takes away from his singing

Realistically: He's good, no doubt, but not as good as Daughtry or McPhee.

Odds: 5-1

Elliott Yamin

Age: 27

Hometown: Richmond, Virginia

Strengths: Has a great falsetto, and decent overall range.

Weaknesses: There's no nice way to say it, but Yamin lacks the esthetic pop-star polish needed to win over America.

Realistically: Should have be proud, and pleased, to have made it this far.

Odds: 20-1

I thought this might interest you.

By the way, it is by Richard Huff.

Wow, that guy actually said these are some of Kat's "Weaknesses"?        Almost like he's saying "Kat's already TOO good to win".    I guess in a way, that's sort of a compliment, lol.

Kind of a strange thing to say, IMO.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those the kind of qualities that should HELP someone win this competition?!?      Funny that he would consider them "Weaknesses".

Well, I think he means that Americans are used to hearing their pop stars with more raw intensity and less formal training and vocal control. Kat is trained and proficient in classic vocal technique (bel canto) which is evident in all of her songs. I happen to love it, but judging from some of the inane comments I've read (even by reviewers) about her performances, this aspect of Kat's talent seems to go underappreciated. Kat is seldom off-pitch, and seems to get criticized for occasional artistic vocal choices. Even "Against all Odds" wasn't technically bad, just a poor choice of arrangement and key. Kat's only real vocal weakness is that she doesn't have the vocal power of the great divas, hence her upper register sounds a bit strident at times when she pushes it too hard.

I wonder why that Katharine makes a bad selection of song choice, like her version of "Against All Odds", but made up for it with her version of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.

Katharine is the real thing.

My pick for the "Idol Odd Couple" (since "couple" means a pair, I'll focus primarily on and single out this Odd Couple):

1) Taylor Hicks, prematurely gray, who instantly made me think of Jay Leno --then, on the Jay Leno show, Jay gleefully agreed that Taylor reminded him of HIMSELF! My opinion of his voice? --mediocre at best, destined to keep him & his band mostly spending time on planes or buses between venues.

2) Chris Daughtry, prematurely bald, who when I first saw him, made me wonder if his grandparents had taken him to see Yul Brynner in "The King & I" once too often! His voice? --moderately good, but with limited versatility (as Simon often reminds him), a pretty limited vocal range & a mostly "rock" repertoire.

Elliott? Great voice, except for his machine-gun vibrato, but very limited potential because, as entertainment gurus know, he lacks the whole package (looks, stage presence, audience interaction, etc).

Katharine? The most remarkable singer I've ever seen perform at age 21-22 -- IMHO, a girl with perhaps even more potential as a singer than Charlotte Church, Judy Garland or Barbra Streisand! ...and at least as much potential as an actress as either Julie Andrews or Meryl Streep.

For me, it's a no-brainer! The world doesn't need another Jay Leno or Yul Brynner look-alike or another fairly average rock singer, or another nite-club/bar performer! What it needs is a girl with the COMPLETE package and with enormous passion for her chosen vocations, singing and acting --in short, another Julie Andrews (who could easily turn out to be even better than Julie)!!!

SO IF WE McPHANS DON'T KNOCK OURSELVES OUT VOTING FOR KAT, I'LL BE SICK!!!
