'Idol' Runner-Up McPhee Eyes January For Debut Album

"American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee is eyeing a Jan. 30 release for her RCA debut, tentatively titled "Never Saw It Comin'." The set primarily features production from Timbaland associate Nate Hill; other contributors include Babyface, Kara Dioguardi and Ryan Leslie, although McPhee is unsure if his cuts will wind up making the album.

"It's rhythm pop," McPhee tells Billboard.com of the album's sound. "It's not like really R&B or really poppy, but there are a couple of tracks that are really good for the 'American Idol' fans who voted for me and knew me as the 'Over the Rainbow' girl."

As for the significance of the tentative album title, she says, "I never saw this coming into my life as big as it did, and you never saw this kind of a record coming. You thought I was going to make a Streisand record."

Having rushed from the "American Idol" summer tour right into the studio, McPhee has yet to line up roadwork for 2007. "I would love to tour, but it will probably depend on how the record does. If nobody buys the record, nobody's going to want to see me live," she says with a laugh.

McPhee's post-"Idol" debut single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny," peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I'm loving the title! And from the article if Ryan Leslie's song doesn't make the album then there must be some really great material there cause his stuff is incredible!

At Pulse everyone seems to think Open Toes was done by Chad Hugo or Nate Hills during her Virginia Beach sessions...I mean that was one of the first songs she had demo'd to hook Ryan in to work on her album so he didn't do it.

Simon, that is assuring....at least....to know that there are a couple of songs for the "over the rainbow" kind of fans like us. But of course I could still jive with the "rhythm pop". Very interesting title---"Never Saw It Comin'"---for Kat's debut album. I guess titles have importance and significance as well. I like it actually. The title (NSIC) takes you away from the stereotypical SOTR stigma of being the runner-up. Now, Kat's album sounds like a debut album of a superhit multi-talented mega-singer who's bound for real success. I support everything about Kat's album and I'm really excited to get my projected 2 dozen copies. Kat, I know you're going to tour and I'll be here waiting for you in Seattle with the rest of the pacific northwesterns, greg, simon, amanda, linda. BTW, maddie and joe, we can all go together like we used to say before. Hey, thanks for posting this. It's just me---mattsie

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

You guys are so welcome, no need to thank me. When I found this I was so excited to get this posted over at KMF for all our Kat Kousins. I love the name for the album title! Also, she WILL sell enough to tour - we already have two RVs lined up for the "Kat Pack Cali Road Tour" it's going to be a blast! BTW - We are looking for drivers, I sure as heck ain't driving, I'd take out far too many curbs! (Why do I keep envisioning Laurie and SJWolves (Joe) behind the wheels?) Oh, also Mutt - kinda ironic the writer is from Hawaii - I thought that was cool . . . I guess he was channeling your aura when he wrote the article.

Co, I find it so weird that the writer is from Molokai, of all places. I think only about 7,000 people live on that island. How the heck did he get to interview Katharine McPhee? I don't think he was channelling my aura, because if that were true, he'd manage to slip in a little mention of Kat in Glasses somehow
