This isn't a very nice review. All the others I've seen have been fairly positive. And RS liked Kellie's. Called it "surprisingly good". Here's the review:
Two stars (out of four):
Idol rocker does go quietly into his career as a recording artist
"The debut from fromer American Idol semifinalist Chris Daughtry makes one thing clear: Homeboy loves to rock. Unfortunately, Daughtry shares a weakness for emotional overspill with his fellow Idol alums. He wields his gruff, hair-flailing voice like a spandex-clad star on mammoth arena fare like "There and Back Again" and sleazy near-metal songs such as "What I Want," a rave-up featuring Slash on guitar. But Daughtry gives in to bombast on a series of giant, aching near-ballads, including "Over You" and "Gone," a dark, Nickelback-worthy cut that includes lines like, "The day you turned on me is the day I died." Daughtry gets points for not courting to soccer moms, but just because he can howl like a mother(edited) doesn't mean he's not a cheeseball."
The (edited) is...well you can figure out what it said. Pretty harsh from Rolling Stone. I suspect Chris' fans aren't happy with this. Oh God...you know we'll be up in arms over any negative Katharine reviews so...I guess this is good to see. I'm sure someone out there will be knocking Kat.
The Hits Daily Double numbers are in. DAUGHTRY hangs on to the #2 spot behind the Incubus debut album. Daughtry sold 149,879 physical copies this week--a 50% drop off from last week.
That's still pretty good. That gives him about 450,000 in two weeks. Now, I haven't heard his songs on the radio yet. Although I live in a place that doesn't always get new stuff right away. Does Chris have a music video? It'll be hard to sustain these numbers without radio airplay or a music video. You are pretty much trusting the existing fan base without that stuff.
I think that's the whole idea behind what Katharine is doing. She's keeping her face out there doing all these things lately and then we'll ramp up the music side around New Year's Day. Single, video...appearances...all the talk show in early February. Media blitz. Some magazine covers. Maybe BSH could do a TV ad. Ooooh, that would be awesome.
Seems to me that something like an idol CD won't follow the normal rules of first releases. It already has a built in market of several hundred thousand people who have been eagerly awaiting it for almost a year. They all buy in the first couple of weeks, probably a lot on the first day and then decreasing numbers are after that as the tardy get their copies. If there were daily totals instead of weekly I'm pretty sure this is what you would see - a downward sloping line on a chart.
At some point, the record will start to catch on with non fans and their purchases will start to bring the graph line back to level and then upward sloping again, hopefully, if the record is a hit.
I think it is too soon to tell on Chris's. This is all just theory. What has happened in the past?
We will be going through the same thing with Katharine's release so we should be prepared for that initial drop off.
