November 28, 2006 -- 'AMERICAN Idol" winner Taylor Hicks is biting the hand that made him a star.
The gray-haired pop-star says he won't watch the Fox show anymore - and just wanted to use the exposure he got from winning "Idol" to further his career.
" 'American Idol' for me is fizzling out," he tells the latest edition of Relix magazine, a publication formerly devoted to following the Grateful Dead.
"I want to take that opportunity and exposure: you either come see me, buy my album or you don't. I'm not trying to meet expectations. If you can say you're a working musician, then you're doing something good.
"I'm just glad to be a working musician because that's what I've always been."
Hicks won "Idol" last season over Katharine McPhee.
Seems to me he is just talking about the TV show? "Rant" hardly applies. Seems like a couple of sentences taken out of context, we've seen that happen to Katharine enough.
Maybe the question was " Will you be watching American Idol this season"? In which case his response is fair enough.
N.Y. Post? 'nuff said.
I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt as I so often wished people had given Katharine in the past - we know how she is always shooting her mouth off!
"and just wanted to use the exposure he got from winning "Idol" to further his career. " Well! There is a shock! How dare he! Sorry, but this applies to every single person who auditions for the show.
People should know by now from politics that anything anyone says can be spun into anything else. If you believe the spinners rather than listening to what was actually said, then you are going to be mislead.
I might dis Taylor sometimes myself, but when it comes to the evil mass media creating a negative story about any of them out of thin air, I'm going to support the contestant, not a rag like the N.Y. Post.
I saw that quote on the top of that magazine when I was looking for the Blender with Katharine in it. I didn't look at the mag. I did see "I don't watch American Idol either!" -- Taylor Hicks. Or I think that's what it said. But as we know...this kind of stuff can be taken so out of context. I think Taylor realizes that American Idol has provided him with the platform to have all these fans he has. As nice as it is to say "I'm just a working musician, etc, etc." well the working musician's life is a little easier when he's got a fancy tour bus and the best equipment, etc, etc, etc...and big venues and everything that being a star gets you.
He knows that nobody would know who he is right now without Idol. Just a quote taken out of context. Nothing more, nothing less.
Unfortunately, Rosie O'Donnell has gotten a hold of this and it was apparently discussed on "The View" today. Apparently, the magazine took his quote out of context . . . and believe me, this happens a lot - same thing happened to a quote from Emily Robison from the Dixie Chicks in Time magazine when their new CD was released. (Funny thing is the quote was about The View, and Meredith Vierra opened the show ripping their magazine, LOL. The next day - an apology was read "on air" from Emily stating how Time took her quote out of context)
Also, look at the two media outlets making a big thing out of it - MSNBC and the New York Post who both love spinning and publishing/broadcasting anything related to AI in a negative light (please keep this in mind). Remember, both MSNBC and the Post have spun stories on Kat, when we all knew the truth. Personally, I wish all the Idols well - I may not be going out and buying their CDs, but we shouldn't be revelling over this and booking him for your future son-in-law or daughter-in-laws wedding just yet.
Here's that part of the interview with his full answer regarding the American Idol comment:
Q. The audiences you’re performing for now are probably quite a bit different than the ones you were performing for a just a year ago. A. American Idol, for me, is fizzling out. I want to take that opportunity and that exposure: you either come to see me, buy my album or you don’t. I’m not trying to meet expectations. If you can say you’re a working musician, then you’re doing something good. I’m just glad to be a working musician because that’s what I’ve always been.
This is in no way "dissing" or "biting" the hand that made him a star. By "fizzling out" he meant the exposure that was given to him by the show. Of course, he can only be the "American Idol" for a year, he wants to take that time and opportunity to put out his music for the people to hear. He is actually very grateful for the opportunity the show has given him, and has acknowledged these statements and cleared all the misconceptions on InTouch Magazine. Here's what he said:
Taylor Hicks: "I Didn't Mean To Slam Idol" Wednesday, Nov. 26 10:15 a.m. Reigning American Idol champion Taylor Hicks says he wasn't biting the hand that feeds him when he told Relix magazine that the "whole American Idol thing is fizzling out for me" and complained that the show pressured him to record the single "Do I Make You Proud." "Those words were taken completely out of context," he tells In Touch. "I'm very thankful to have the opportunity to be on American Idol. It's a show that teaches a lot of young people about music and ties families together. I'm very grateful." Taylor's self-titled debut album hit stores on December 12.
I usually don't reply on Taylor topics in this forum because I am also his fan and I know that most of you don't like him that much. But I felt like the treatment given to him was the same during the time when Katharine was out of the tour and there were all these things said about her that she allegedly said about her being bigger than Idol, missing the tour on purpose to benefit her own career, etc.
We immediately dismissed those things and believed that Kat is not the type of person to think of herself bigger than the show that helped make her a star. She then reaffirmed our beliefs and denied saying those things. Why not give Taylor the same chance? I believe he's got the same class like Katharine has.
Please, please do not get me wrong, I love all of you and I respect all your opinions, I just wanted to say something about this thing before I spontaneously combust and say things that I would regret instead.
I agree shinara, if you read my post towards the beginning of the thead I say something similar. It isn't that I don't like Taylor, I just don't like his "vocal stylings".
But, when the gutter press like the NY Post maliciously and falsely smears anyone, then we all need to band together against them, it may be Taylor this time, but it has been Katharine in the past and no doubt will be again in the future.

Thank you, thank you so much Phee!! I knew from the get go that even though we may differ in opinion at times, there's always room for understanding. And I truly, truly appreciate you saying those things. *hugs*
