I heard TRL was canceled. That was probably the only programming i know of that MTV has devoted to music videos.  It's audience dropped to half what it once was.

You have to watch these MTV 2's and other secondary music channels to see videos nowadays it seems, and how many people really watch those things anyway?

it's sort of a shame, because I think music videos (the visual aspect of marketing an artist) would really help kat.

Music videos are definitely NOT dead. I watch them all the time late at night and early in the morning on Vh1 and MTV, and I know a lot of other people do as well. They're definitely still the best form of promotion for a song imo because not everyone listens to the radio, but most people flip the channels late at night.

"I think it was the summertime when I laid eyes on you. I didn't even know your name...The boy you never wanted just steals your heart..."--Kat McPhee, Love Story

"4 walls and no you. The silence in this room is so loud...wow"--Kat McPhee, I Lost You

"I didn't see the crash that burnt the bridge, didn't see the missile that sank my loveship down..."--Kat McPhee, Dangerous

"Wanting you to be wanting me, no that ain't no way to be...You never were a friend of mine..."--Kat McPhee, Over It

"No more lonely nights to hurt me, no more tears left to spare, no more reasons to be unhappy. You threw them all up in the air..."--Kat McPhee, Each Other

"Your pedicure, white-tipped French. Your legs don't make no sense...Shoes like these make me hate flats..."--Kat McPhee, Open Toes

I agree with Jasmine. Starting today and tomorrow, Katharine posters will be everywhere on the net and other places. The single will be added to playlists on radio stations and her name will be everywhere too. With someone who looks like Katharine, the release of a video added to the other promotion, it would be difficult to avoid her CD. That is great marketing. Right, Tina?

No, the video is still a great enhancement tool. It serves the same purpose as live performances, but can be shown multiple times each day on multiple media outlets. It's just that the quality of the video has declined.

^Exactly my sentiments on answering Ken's question. Perhaps why most videos are only shown late at night or extremely early in the morning now (and when I say extremely early out there...I'm talkin' 5 in the morning ) is because of the raunchier nature of videos lately. Frankly, I think a lot of people are sick and tired of the ass-shaking videos with Hip-Hop/Rap singers "singing" around a bunch of backup dancers who like to get their booty into the camera a little too often. A few years ago, it seems we hit an all-time high (or low) of that type of video as if that's what everybody wanted to see all the time. I've always doubted that it was the type of video every single person who likes the art of videos wanted...but that's an entirely different argument about what people truly want in art. It just seems odd to me that you never see videos in the daytime much anymore...other than TRL on MTV. Is that true TRL was canceled, Ken? I can't even imagine it--and especially when Kat could have been utilized on there with her upcoming video.

For me, I'd like to see some real class brought back to videos again. I don't watch them much lately--because they usually weird me out or just make me think that the same ass-shaking concepts will never end. Occasionally you'll get a really great and inventive video with blow-your-mind special effects. You only get maybe one or two of those a year though.

Kat deserves a video that shows some true class...yet still edgy enough to sell. There's that balance argument again and how to do it right. Perhaps it's a good idea to look backwards and see some of the great music videos made 10-20 years ago. That was back when making a video was a real work of art and not exploitive or nauseating like some are now. Sure, make one sexy--because Kat will need some element of that in order to make kids sit up and notice. I just want to see Kat presented in a way that displays her as a classy woman with an interesting story to tell. Let's hope CGI doesn't override the emotion that would undoubtedly emanate right from her.

Well, if TRL is dead...then that means we'll have to sit up all night watching for Kat's videos on MTV or VH1. I wish MTV or VH1 would give a schedule of when they'll broadcast a particular video so fans can look out for them. Yes, people still watch them--but you never know when they're going to be on. And that might frustrate a lot of people who want to see it.

I believe music videos are alive and well, it's just that on MTV, music is secondary to everything else. When MTV first debuted, it was basically all music videos all the time, but now they have one hour and a half show dedicated to music videos. And it's more about the music than the video itself. They have turned to alternative programming and taken the focus almost completely in a different direction from what it used to be. Music videos are not going out of style anytime soon, or no one would be making them still, especially not top artists like Christina and Fergie, etc.

I have no doubt that Kat will make music videos and they will make her even more popular and turn more people on to her music.

The days of music videos being a staple of the the young music listeners time in front of the TV is likely gone. That doesnt' mean that it isn't an effective tool for reaching an audience that is much more fragmented than at any time in the past. Snippets in television advertisements for radio stations and streaming online are both effective ways to use the "visual hook" of a music video to peak interest in a CD or track. I think the "old school" idea of a huge audience for music video shows or networks (a la MTV in the early 1980's) is very much a dated one.

For instance, somebody may have heard Over It on the radio adding the visual of the Katharine McPhee package to the mix could enhance a persons interest in the music.

You're forgetting one pretty major medium for music videos these days.  Think about what you are looking at this message on.  A lot of people watch music videos on the Internet.  It's at your fingertips.  I'm sure that's why MTV & VH1 don't show videos during the day.  They know you can just go find your favorite video on the Internet.  It's still a very useful marketing tool.

And they do play videos in the morning/late at night.  And VH1 still does a weekly Top 20 countdown show.  So they are still relevant.  It's just changed.  The way you see them has changed (like everything else).

And think about it.  Didn't Daughtry just debut his video on AOL a few days ago?  The Internet rules the world these days.  That would have been unheard of a few years ago.  But it probably makes the most sense nowadays.

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.
