There is sheet music for Katharine's SOTR.   In the a cappella verse, the word "rain" goes up, so this must based on her single.  The first page can be viewed online, and also played.  I wonder if the solo sheet music has been published and can be found in music stores?  Has anyone seen it?

Wow!  It's great to see the name Katharine McPhee on sheet music.  I wish I would have taken piano lessons when I was young...I'll have to rely on my ear.  Thanks for posting this information!

Thanks, a1s2d3f4, for alerting us to that new sheet music edition of 'OtR.' Though, after looking at it, it seems to be the same song sheet as the original song. It has the original copyright (1939) at the bottom--and it's also written in the original key (A-flat)--so it's still the same song sheet as printed in the 30's. And that note that goes up slightly on the "rain" note was in the original music too. I've seen the old sheet music--because my dad has a huge collection of old sheet music from the 20th century that belonged to my grandparents. I don't think he has a first edition of 'OtR'--but I've seen later re-printings...and this looks the same.

I think Alfred Publishing just put it out with Katharine's name on it to sell more copies of the song to make money for those who are a part of the Arlen/Harburg estates. I'm sure it was already one of the Top 100 bestselling pieces of sheet music consistently--but the Katharine promotion may move it up to the Top Ten now.

Honestly, a pile of dirt with Katharine's name on it would sell like hotcakes (if you must compare hotcakes to piles of dirt) at this point.

This is fairly common when a famous singer or musician does a cover of an old song: It's re-released in sheet music with the illusion you're playing the same arrangement as the recent recording. Sometimes they're re-arranged in a simpler arrangement 'based on' the arrangement you heard on the recording. But they usually give the credit to the arranger on the score. I'm pretty sure the David Foster arrangement on Katharine's single was written in A-major (based on the C# Kat hits at the end on the tour recently). Then again, they may have lowered the key on this sheet music to make it easier to play. Though A-flat isn't exactly easy to play in for beginners. A-major would actually be easier with only three sharps.

Anyway, it's interesting to see the sheet music for that again. I assume Harold Arlen's grandkids (or maybe great grandkids at this point) control his estate. You'd think they'd get a check in the mail every time 'Wizard of Oz' is on TV--but they're probably glad Katharine revived the song to sell more of the sheet music...that actually brings the most money in for it.

Incidentally, on the preview page for the sheet music, they have a transposer where you can modulate it to the key of your choice. Of course, it's only the first page provided--but if you have a good ear, you can pick the rest of the song out on your own.

Edit: It says 'Original sheet music edition' at the top of the title page--so it truly is the same song sheet.

Gregoriancant, you have such excellent posts that I hate to disagree with you, but the sheet music for Katharine Mcphee's SOTR is NOT the same as the original sheet music for the song, and looks to me, although I haven't seen the whole song of the Alfred version, from the first page to based on her own performance. This might make a difference to some who might want to buy the sheet music if it is based on Kat' s performance.

The clearest indication that the Alfred is based on the Kat's performance, is that it is missing the first two lines of the verse from the original song.

When all the world is a hopeless jumble, and the raindrops tumble all around, heaven opens a magic lane.

Kat doesn't sing these words (although I wish that the complete verse were done). BTW, in movie "The Wizard of Oz", as I recall, Judy Garland does not sing the verse at all, but starts with the chorus "somewhere over the rainbow."

Also, the Alfred version has the verse marked a capella, without accompaniment, just as Kat sang it. Also the rhythm of the line "somewhere over the rainbow" is not the same as the original, but is jazzed up as Kat sang it. On the word "rain", Kat sings it going down on the AI performances, from a B flat to an E flat, like the original, but on the single and the Penney Jam and the tour, she sings it going up, from a B flat to a C.

The original was in the key of E flat. Kat sang it in the key of A flat. On the single, Kat maintains the key throughout. But on the Penney Jam and on the tour, she changes key suddenly to the key of A, going up a half step, when she returns to the words "somewhere over the rainbow".

This is what Judy Garland says in the movie "The Wizard of Oz" before she sings "Over the Rainbow" she never sings the verse.

Someplace where there isn't any trouble . . .Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto?

This is what Katharine sings for the verse on AI:

When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There’s a rainbow highway to be found
Leading from your window pain
To a place behind the sun
Just a step behind the rain


However, on the single, she leaves out the words "To a place behind the sun." So the Alfred sheet music for "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" matches the wording of the single, but does not the original sheet music for the song, or Kat's performance of AI.

Yes, you're right after seeing the clues you provided. I gave that first page a cursory reading and seemed to be similar to prior published editions. But it's obviously arranged (in a simple form) to sound similar to the David Foster arrangement. I wondered if it possibly could be a simplified arrangement based on the Katharine recording. But it's always strange to me when Alfred and other publishers don't give the name of the arranger--or even any identification of the person who did the arrangement on the recording. I'd think David Foster wouldn't be too happy that this edition takes from his arrangement without credit.

I guess what should have given it away was the left hand that sets the basic pop rhythm on Kat's recording. The original song sheet had a much different left hand to correspond to 1930's sounds. Also, the verse (as you noted) is different.

And you're right about the original song sheet being in E-flat. It's been a while since I've seen the original song sheet--but I'm reminded from your comment of the original key. Thanks, too, for figuring out that Kat's arrangement starts out in A-flat and then modulates to A-major (hence that C# she's been hitting recently). It's too bad you can't see every page here, and I would have known immediately.

So, I hope people buy this now that it's been straightened out. I wonder who benefits financially particularly with this editon? I assume the Arlen/Harburg estates get most of the profits--with Alfred getting the usual allotted publishing profit (maybe 20%).  Kat wouldn't get a cent--even though you'd think David Foster would because it's his arrangement.
