Everytime I watch it, it's as brilliant as it was the first time.

Since I Fell For You and Over the Rainbow were problem considered her two top performances on stage, with Rainbow obviously the best.

I wonder if God Bless the Child was the best...? I think it may have been. What do you think?

I'm dying to hear her sing it again, acappela. All we have is that clip from the homecoming at Notre Dame, and the audio is weak, plus it lasts like 17 seconds.

As Simon said, parts of God Bless the Child were fantastic. What he didn't say was, other parts were over cooked.
Would like to hear Kat sing God Bless the Child in a non-competitive environment.

I tend to agree with Sammy and Simon: less can be more. For me STWOM was the pinnacle of Kat's AI performances, and the first time I could really savor and enjoy the purity of her voice, rather than just be offered a 'taste' here and there. Of course much the same can be said of SOTR, which has gone through incredible evolution since Kat's first performance, and her JCP Jam rendition has to be considered her best televised performance to date.

i agree with bcollan.
i think SWTOM is about the best performance from her. but i have to admit i really to enjoy when she sings god bless the child. i love ALL her AI performances, but my favorites are SWTOM and SOTR. I also enjoyed "I Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues".. yeah those were my three favorites! lol
But i think the BEST televised performance of Katharine would have to be her duet with Andrea- "Somos Novios" it was amazinggg.

In almost all of Kat's performances you find her doing something that is artistically brilliant. Her low range is sexy, her high range is beautiful, and her middle range is overwhelming. I think she has kind of spoiled us and we just keep waiting for her to put it all together in that one perfect song.

Sort of like a great pitcher that finally throws a perfect game!

God Bless the Child was a spectacular performance and it showcased what she is capable of when her voice is rested and healthy. It kept her fans fighting for her even when she struggled on the show. But I don't think it was her best.

For me, STWOM was the pinnacle of Kat's AI performances. Kat's true voice came out in that song and of course OTR(1st time) was a stellar performance...

I wouldn't call "God Bless the Child" overcooked. It was perfect for an audition; she probably shouldn't sing the entire song like that, but her goal was to make an impression and she definitely did. It was a perfect vocal.

I would say that it was *maybe* her best vocal of the AI season, but not her best performance. I loved Katharine all season long, but it was really STWOM that made me a die-hard McPhan. She looked and sounded more beautiful than ever. That is probably my most favorite of her performances, followed by SOTR, SIFFY, and Somos Novios with Andrea.

GBTC hooked me, but I gotta agree w/a lot of the folks on this thread -- STWOM was her "home run performance" (to use Ryan's words from the show that night), and my personal favorite of all her great performances.

I agree with kenneth. God Bless the Child, for me, was the best I've heard Kat. I'd really feel like I was missing out if I never heard her sing it again or in its entirety. STWOM is nice, but I just guess it isn't high on my favorites, but SOTR, SIFFY, and her performances with Bocelli are.

I think Simon knew she was a kid trying to impress the judges with some vocal pyrotechnics, but he heard enough of the quality of her voice when she just sang it straight to be impressed anyway. They didn't have to listen long to make up their minds, did they? Besides, she was this cute kid who got all emotional and cried when they praised her performance. They knew they had A Candidate. It wasn't her best performance, but it had them all wondering what her best would sound like. Then at the very end, they found out.

I have to say, Paula did get goosebumps. Randy was pretty much floored.

There was one part of the song where maybe she over did it a bit, but all in all, in person and not through a television screen, it must have been mindblowing.

How often does an artist get to sing that long before Simon stops them? Extremely rarely. They (the judges) all just took it in. And when Simon finally stopped her and Kat flashed what is obviously the most beautiful smile in the world, I think we were all hooked.

What I love about acappella is that it's the artist's voice, and nothing else. You don't have to try to hear through background music.

As far as what the audition meant, I think everyone is on the money () when they say that we were all waiting during Idol to see that Kat again. I always figured that watching Kat without the audition during idol must have been a very different experience for those who didn't fully appreciate her, in the sense that they hadn't seen the benchmark she set for herself, and that gave us all so much hope. As the competition wore on, it was definitely beginning to feel like the audition became a memory to even those of us who saw it.

Then she reminded us with Rainbow how truly brilliant of a singer she is. Once again, she didn't have to compete with any background "noise." It was just 100 percent Kat, pure and simple.

^ She defintitely needs to record a few acapella tracks in the future, or on her own tour, she should sing a couple songs with no musical backup.

i personally loved kats "god bless the child" but yes there were some parts in there where she over-sang it but it was still an amazing performance! my favorite kat performances were SIFFY, SOTR, IAGNBTB and STWOM... i specifically like SIFFY because it was her 1st real performance for america and i believe, it was one of her best! I also think that her performance w/meatloaf, IACBTMN... her vocals were amazing! she hit those high notes really well... those are my thoughts

Canadian Idol is down to the final three tonight, with Tony Bennett and the standards as the theme.

Most people don't think any of these contestants are talented, but to me, one star is emerging and that is 19 year old from Gataineau, Quebec called Eva Avila. And tonight, she sang 'God Bless the Child.'
Unfriggin believeable!!!!! Hopefully, someone uploads it to YouTube.

This kid is a star in the making. And when you see her, and I'm sure all of North America will eventually, she'll remind you of Katharine McPhee.

I wouldn't say that it was THE BEST, but I would say that it was a prefect audition! It showed us everything about Kat...

- her low notes
- her high notes
- her "runs"
- her sultry voice
- her deep stare
- her true genre

So, it may not have been THE BEST but i think it was the most Katharine-like

I wouldn't say that it was THE BEST,
Maybe it WOULD have been the best for you if she's worn her glasses.

THE FACT THAT SHE SANG IT WITHOUT ANY MUSIC BEHIND IT,WHICH I HEARD CAN BE HARD TO DO,MAKES IT ONE OF THE BEST PERFORMANCES SHE DID ON THE SHOW.BUT IN MY OPINION,IT WASN'T HER BEST PERFORMANCE.HER BEST PERFORMANCE IN MY OPINION IS ( I HAVE NOTHING ).IT HAD EVERYTHING,IT HAD PASSION,IT HAD ATTITUDE,IT HAD A CERTAIN YELLOW DRESS THAT MADE MY EYES POP OUT OF MY HEAD WHEN THE BUTTON POPED OFF.TO ME THAT WAS THE BEST PERFORMANCE KAT HAD ON THE SHOW,I KNOW I WON'T SOON FORGET IT----------PEACE.

I've been watching Eva's performances Sammy (but haven't seen tonights yet) and she does remind me of Kat except she doesn't quite have her vocal purity and Kat's had more performances that have floored me than Eva. But when she's on with the right song, she's fantastic. I absolutely love "How come you don't Call me" but that's the only one that I was super impressed with so far.

I'd be intrigued to hear kat sing GBTC with music because she would probably have a much different take on it. I'd guess that she'd make it jazzier in the vein of SIFFY. But I think she was very smart in her acapella arrangement. She took a famous song and sang it in a way that I've never heard and she showed off what she can do with her voice which is the point of an audition. If she sang the song later in the competition with back-up music, she'd probably have a different take on it and that's one reason I love Kat. She can change a song around to fit the situation and still make it her own and sing it wonderfully.

Compare Kat's audition to Paris Bennett who also sang Billie Holliday and did so wonderfully but essentially she did a fantastic Billie Holliday impersonation. Kat did her own original take on the song. That in itself is impressive.

i honestly don't think KAT oversang parts of God Bless the Child. i think the song was just perfect for her voice. a review of the season 5 encore cd came out in a major newspaper here in McPheelippines. the reviewer said she sounds mature for her age and sounds black. i totally agree with the review. she does sometimes sound like a black woman, especially in GBTC. maybe it sounds overcooked when we look at her singing that way, because we see a young and very beautiful white woman in front of us. when my friends - who never watched AI and don't know who she is - listened to my cd of GBTC, they were totally impressed and thought she was an older black woman. i hope you get my point.

was it her best though? well, i think Until You Come Back to Me was better.

It seems like every thread I've ever read about which is Kat's best performance or underrated performance always takes a fascinating turn. There always seems to be common themes in them.

1. Just about everybody has a different Kat performance as their favorite. I think the reason for this is simply a matter of taste and a testimony to how versatile Katharine is. I seen a poll on another website that had 15 of Kat's songs to pick as your favorite and 12 of them got at least one vote from a very small voting pool.

2. We always nit pick every little aspect of her AI performances. I don't think it's our fault. It's what the show is all about. You get these undiscovered artists and run them through the entertainment biz ringer. We get their performances, which in most cases is a song that the contestant has never sang in public, served to us live and raw and we decide if they're good enough to stick around.

They get little time to perfect their craft. like say an established artist making a Tonight Show appearance might get, and they are still incredible performances. And to see them all on tour, when they have had time to work on their craft, without the pressure of the tv show voting process, and with the energy of the crowd to draw on, it is an eye opener as to how talented they all really are.

Eva Avila - for some reason, before she was brought up in this thread, I too was thinking about her while reading this thread. Maybe there was a trigger word somewhere that reminded me of her, I dunno.

But I agree that she is alot like Kat. They are both beautiful girls, they both have great vocal range and amazing vocal runs, and are a bit theatrical in there stage performances. And I agree that she is head and shoulders above everybody else in CI this season. And I also agree that the main difference between them is vocal purity or tone or whatever it is.

Kat's tone is very unique and rare. It's that thing that makes you wonder if you are listening to a real person or something more spiritual, like an angel or a mythological creature. When I hear Kat sing I imagine that is how the Sirens from greek mythology would have sounded. It's spine tingling some of the things her talent allows her to do.
