Simon Cowell will turn on a contestant from week to week.  Though other than the terrible Whitney Houston remark  for which he later apologized and the Elvis show and just afterward when he said that Katharine should be voted off the show, most of his comments for Katharine were very complimentary. He highly praised God Bless,Think, Watch over me, "you looked like a returning pro", and SOTR saying it was the best number on the show this season twice.  He also gave her this song that helped her into the final two though Katharine was always good enough to make it on her own.

Deep down it seems that he did realize Katharine belonged in the final and had tremendous potential to develop into the star that she is now, and realized how truly astounding it is that she can take a rendition of established entertainers such as Aretha Franklin, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin and even Whitney Houston (sorry Randy) and make it seem as if it is her own song.

Yes, Katharine does make other performers look like good amateurs, and that is one of the many reasons why we find her to be an incredible stage performer and skilled vocalist.

That was my favorite quote by Simon, and something I've never heard him say of any other Idol contestant, ever. I've always felt that Simon recognized Kat for what she is ( and can become), but I also think he underestimated the taste of the American public, hence his prediction of a final 6 without Kat. Even his IHN remarks weren't as bad as we tend to think them to be. After all, he just said that Kat wasn't as good as Whitney...one of the best singers of the last 50 years. Yes, he said it with the usual Cowell distainful flair, and I was as put off as anyone at the time, but if you think about it, he said much worse to EVERY contestant at one point or another, including his self proclaimed favorite Chris.

I agree...this was one of my favorite Simon quotes as well. As far as his feelings toward Katharine, I truly feel that Simon is the only person involved with American Idol that gave "accurate" comments to Katharine, accurate meaning what he truly felt. I don't believe that at any pont in the show he was negative when he didn't feel he should have been. And, when he was, he apologized, so harm done, because we voted like crazy!

You can see that from comments like this one and his brilliance in choosing SOTR for Katharine. Throughout the whole competition, Simon was the only one who was true to Kat because he gave her what she needed and that was his whole hearted opinion, not comments to get ratings.

Other than he wanted a guy to win...I agree. Simon, for the most part, speaks his mind, but I DO think this year the producers desire to have a male winner clouded some of his "feedback".

Simon is self serving. He will say things just to make himself look good. You know why he apologized for IHN? Because Kat got the most votes that night and he knew he was wrong for judging her harshly so to save face, he says "after watching it on replay, I owe Katharine an apology". Too self seving if you ask me.

I am sorry but I am still very hurt with not only Simon but the other two judges as well. I don't know if I will ever like them again. This year, they have just been a bunch of punks. I watch AI not because of them but because of the talent that I comes from the show. I was not even compelled to vote for anyone this year until Kat's bottom 3.

Sorry for blabbing along...but my point is, as much as Simon's comments of Kat sounds good, and even though he may mean it, I still think he says it because he thinks it will serve him right in the end. My hat will stay in my head and won't come off for Simon.

I guess I half way agree with you! The judges and producers really made me mad, but i feel like Simon doesn't do anything for ratings...maybe he does, I don't know.

All I know is, without Simon, there would be no SOTR, so we have to give him some due props!

After all is said and done, I think we probably owe Simon for the fact that K. got into the top two (and possibly a lot more, but that was the Biggie). He couldn't have done anything more or better than giving her just the absoslutely perfect song to sing--IF she could pull it off. He wasn't handing her a win, he was handing her the best possible chance to win. And she took it and ran for the roses with it. Well, almost. Can you even imagine what might have happened if he'd given her a really sucky song that wouldn't have perked up the ears of even casual voters, who suddenly said "Wow, that brings back memories" or "now that's my kind of song sung just right," or whatever they said. So no matter how teed off I get about IHN night, I have to remember what he did LAST, because that was what counted.

I think Simon knew how important it was for a guy to win this year (don't forget he produces the show), and would've rather seen Chris win than Taylor. Had it been another year though, I think he probably would've supported Katharine even moreso.

i totally agree! honestly, i think he was the nicest to Kat out of all the judges. becuase paula and simon were so hard on her and she didnt deserve it because she did such a great job week after week. simon seemed to be the nicest and was the one that actually realized that she deserved to be in the finale. i know that he realizes Katharine has a pure talent!
