I just read this on IDF, and a sharp Katfan was able to find a strong candidate on who the mystery producer of Kat's "demo girl" song might be.
His name is John Shank, and he won a grammy last year. He's written "Breakaway" with Kelly Clarkson, "Pieces of Me" for Ashlee Simpson, A LOT of Hilary Duff's songs
.....Keith Urbans really popular one "Somebody for you".....Santana songs...."everything" by Alanis Morisette....."Everywhere" by Michelle Branch, and "peacekeeper" by Fleetwood mac..just to name a few.
Well I checked his site....www.johnshanks.net......and what's so cool was that in his photo gallery, there is a pic of him with the exact same hat this guy in the studio has with Adriana.
Coincidence?? I hope not!!
------> Hey...if you want to help VALIDATE this..go to his official website.
When the little console loads..go the bottom left, and click the square button that says "Click here to visit John's forum and Ask Questions"
I asked "Is Katharine Mcphee working with John?" And added some other stuff, citing some stuff, and saying thanks.
Hopefully..if there are enough emails...they'll answer it!! So please go and ask.
**** All this snooping, and A+ detective work goes to Katharine McIdol...she's so smart!!

Haha, cool. That's the song I dedicated to Kat for the get well project. I know I'm just looking for any kind of connection here...just leave me alone.

I'm quite aware of John Shanks--and he appears to maybe be the male replacement for Diane Warren in the songwriting arena? We haven't heard a thing out of DW since that announcement she and Kat would write songs together. Though apparently she meant that it'd just be a few songs with Kat contributing to the writing process in some way. Kat's already said in some interviews that she has songwriting ability, and I'm really glad to hear that so she can get solid co-writing credit on those songs.
Yes, I've heard about Shanks working with Hilary Duff and Kelly Clarkson. He's probably more Pop, though, than Diane Warren even is. Of course, we're talking about producing tracks here and not necessarily writing them. But John Shanks is somewhat of a leap away from David Foster. JS is hipper and will make sure Katharine has a modern sound on her album. Whether that's a portent to Katharine staying in that arena for the rest of her career--it's hard to say. It'll all depend on how well the fans receive the music on the CD. We know we'll love anything that's on there. But hearing Kat singing something just so it's more marketable I hope doesn't continue for her entire career.
I guess Kat can always divide it up between Shanks and Foster later. Shanks for the more modern pop albums--and then Foster for the standards/jazz albums. That's really a wide leap, though only Kat could get away with doing that.
If Kat wants to stick to one producer in the future--it makes you wonder which one she'd ultimately stick with. David Foster seems like such a perfect mentor/producer for her. After wild success, though, with a hipper producer, it makes you ponder if Kat would decide to stick with what's proven to work.
By the way, good eye on the photo...even though I bet that same cap is worn by various people.

Mmmm, I dunno about that, Greg, although pop is an awfully nebulous term. When I think of Diane Warren, I think of MOR pop, leaning toward the AC side, wheras I hear Shanks as more pop/rock overall.
Of course, we're talking about producing tracks here and not necessarily writing them.
That is true. Shanks has been known to produce and not write, although he often does both. But Shanks does have a very distinctive, slick, layered sound, which some say is a little TOO polished, but such is the way of most AI product. If memory serves, he also worked on some of Diana Degarmo's album, so it makes sesne for 19 to turn to him.
I guess Kat can always divide it up between Shanks and Foster later. Shanks for the more modern pop albums--and then Foster for the standards/jazz albums. That's really a wide leap, though only Kat could get away with doing that.
The way I would put it is, Shanks skews younger, Foster skews older. That I can see Kat working comfortably with both speaks to her versatility. As far as her album goes, I'm guessing Shanks isn't producing all of it. Kelly Clarkson's last disc had about four production teams, Shanks being one of them, yet it hangs together surprisingly well. I suspect Kat's album will be much the same way, with the aim being to try on a number of different sounds and styles to see which goes over best. It'll be kinda like an audio fitting room.

After wild success, though, with a hipper producer, it makes you ponder if Kat would decide to stick with what's proven to work.
Kat doesn't necessarily have to stick to one. The old adage of one artist/one producer doesn't hold true nearly as much as it used to. I think it'll depend on who Kat gets on with best and which producer is the best match for the song.
Personally, I much prefer Shanks to Diane Warren. Warren's peak seems to have passed and all her songs sound the same to me anymore. I've liked quite a few of the people Shanks has teamed with, including Kelly, Michelle Branch and Sheryl Crow.
Of course, now that we've said all this, watch it either NOT be Shanks or that none of his material gets used on Kat's album!

Foster needs to stay away from her album...she needs current producers like Shanks, Max Martin, Linda Perry, Kara Dioguardi, etc...people who make music that pops in a big way. Katharine needs to hit big with at least 1-2 radio successes.

I want her to do some work with Linda Perry too! And hopefully...Christina can give her some help....since they're on the same label maybe? Kelly's cd, I have to say was successful due to "Miss Independent"..the only song I really liked on her first album. Kat needs killer songs like that.

How many people buy a CD because they like every single track on it? It seems to me, especially with Katharine's background and the fact that people have watched her go through AI singing all different types of songs, it would make a lot of sense to give the album balance, or range, or whatever you'd call it. Different producers and writers and sounds. See what flies and what doesn't. Part of her genius is that she can appeal to so many different types of musical tastes. A few hundred thousand folks buy it for these two songs, anothder hundred thousand buy it for those two songs... pretty soon you're talking big numbers!
(Oh and then there's us folks who'd buy a CD of her singing the phone book... We count too.)

John Shanks! This definitely confirm that Kat's new album will be more Pop and modern, it'll help Kat's debut to get more audience in my opinion, we all know that we'll love anything that's on the album, but sometimes market means a lot to a "new" singer. Hopefully Foster will also bring something that shows Kat's grace and ability as a legendary singer.

Count me in the latter group!
(And if she made a platinum bestseller out of the phone book, someone would appear on YouTube claiming that she copied her rendition from Eva Cassidy...)

Interesting that she does BHCT on the AI tour as there was speculation that she could not use it because KT was also touring with it.
What about KT writing songs for Kat? Much more contemporary than Diane Warren, and Kat seems to be able to take a KT song and make it her own.

When KT released BHACT to AI, the agreement must have included Kat's use for additional live shows. And yes, I too would love a few KT songs on Kat's album. But singer/songwriters typically don't share their best work.
