I was driving to work today and listening to Katharine’s performance, which is pretty much the only music I listen to in the car.  ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ came on and something dawned on me.  I pictured listening to that song playing in the background of a movie, most likely a Romance or Drama.  Different scenes popped into my mind that the song would play during and so on.

Katharine has the potential to have a theme song that is as popular as the movie.  If you think of movies such as Titanic, Armageddon, and The Bodyguard, the songs ‘My Heart Will Go On’, ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’, and ‘I Will Always Love You’ go hand in hand.  I can already see movie goers watching a movie, falling in love with a song sang by Kat in the movie, and running to buy that soundtrack purely for her song.

Not only does she have the potential for a possible Oscar with her acting (you never know!) but she could end up with one for an Oscar winning song.  Katharine’s possibilities are infinite.  It’s incredible to think about how much Katharine could do before she even turns 30.  She is that amazing…

Good points there about where Kat could go in combining her musical talents with the movie industry. I think the ideal scenario there is if she starred in a musical film (ok, let's say 'Wicked' again) and then was a major part of the soundtrack. She could probably get 'Defying Gravity' on the pop charts if she recorded for the 'Wicked' soundtrack...even though it's a duet with whomever the other star would be.

There's also the process of having songs used without the artist being directly involved. Movies are always using old music from artists both dead and still alive. It saves money and time--and the only time spent is getting clearance from the artist or estate of the deceased artist. Frequently a soundtrack will feature an old recording that was forgotten...and has a bit of a renaissance because it's in a popular movie.

Hopefully the Oscars won't start giving awards for old songs--though every soundtrack has a new song in order to compete there. All Kat would have to do is sing one song for the soundtrack and be eligible. She wouldn't even have to be in the movie. Though I wonder if a movie that used something such as 'My Destiny' would count. The fact that it's recent--you'd think it could be used in a movie soundtrack while still being eligible for a nomination. I'm sure 19 Entertainment wouldn't mind having it (or 'OtR') used in a movie.

Apparently the Best Song category at the Oscars goes to the performer and not the songwriter. I'm not sure of that though. I know it goes to the songwriter at the Grammy Awards.

There's no doubt, though, that Kat's voice WILL be heard on movie soundtracks in years to come. It's too much of a classic voice not to be used in some capacity. It's just that a 'Wicked' soundtrack would provide more for her to do on the sountracks. Plus, she'd be eligible for Best Song and acting awards...

Actually, the Oscars are the same as the Grammys in this respect: the award goes to the songwriter(s) not the performers. If it did go to the performers, Madonna would have two Oscars by now, but she does not. That's because "Sooner or Later" from "Dick Tracy" was written by Stephen Sondheim, who won. Similarly, the award for "You Must Love Me" from "Evita" went to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Also, a song has to be written specifically for a movie to win. Therefore, something like MD would not be elgible. A lot of people thought Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" would be a great choice from the "Batman Forever" soundtrack. Problem was, that  song was co-opted by the film but not written specifically for it.

Some people express surprise that "Singin' in the Rain" wasn't a best song nominee. That's because it wasn't written specifically for the 1952 movie. It was some 25 years old by that point.

So for Kat to win this award, she'd have to write or co-write the song. Not out of the question, but I imagine we'll see Kat trying her luck at the Grammys first.
