IDOL'S FALSE NOTE

'COMPLETE
FABRICATION,' SAYS
PRODUCER: FANTASIA WAS NOT PUSHED TO DROP OUT

By DON KAPLAN

July 31, 2006 -- THE producers of "American Idol" are angry about suggestions in the upcoming Fantasia Barrino movie on Lifetime that they pushed her to quit because she was an unwed mother.

"Certainly, under no circumstances was she ever ap proached to be talked out of tak ing part in [the show]," "Idol" exec utive producer Ken Warwick told The Post. "We knew she had a baby right from Day One, and she was always strongly tipped to win the competition because she was so good.

"I can absolutely refute that nothing was done, or even remotely suggested to her that she shouldn't take part in the competition," he said.

"It's a complete fabrication."

The Post reported on Friday that the biographical movie - called "Fan tasia: Life is Not a Fairy Tale" and set to air in mid-August - about her unlikely rise to the top of the pop music world in 2004, hints that the producers of the show subtly pres sured her to quit.

In the film's opening scene, a surprised Fantasia - who plays herself in the movie - is stopped coming off stage from the show's weekly telecast and told a producer wants to see her in her dressing room.

The "Idol" producer asks if she's read the Internet chatter about her - that she was an unwed teenage mother and a high-school dropout and that she was not a role model as the next Idol. The producer then suggests no one would blame the then-19-year-old if she decided to quit the show.

"It's absolutely and totally untrue," Warwick says. "I'm the executive producer, Nigel [Lythgoe] is the other executive producer and nobody - to my knowledge - would have said anything like that to her."

In the film, the executive is not identified other than by a first name, Ed. (No producer with that first name is listed in the show's credits.)

The scene serves as a set-up for the rest of the film - a flashback to her roughshod upbringing in small-town North Carolina and the road to the "Idol" finals.

The dressing-room conference comes back near the end of the movie - where again she is offered the option to get off the show. Of course, she turns it down and goes on to win the 2004 edition of the show.

Fantasia's representatives did not make her available for an interview over the weekend.

The movie is a big departure for Lifetime, which has specialized in making women-in-crisis films based on true stories - but has rarely dealt much with celebrity movies.

The film uses real footage from "Idol," including her original audition in Atlanta, clips of the "Idol" judges' ecstatic reaction to her and several appearances on the show.

Use of the original footage would have required the approval of the "Idol" producers - though it was not immediately known whether the show asked for or saw the movie script beforehand.

The film is based on Fantasia's inspirational autobiography of the same name, published last year.

The movie - filled with gospel music - is an unflinching look at Fantasia's tumultuous teen years, including her disastrous affairs with two young local men, her rape by a classmate and the birth of her daughter.

Yes. Personally, I didn't like it when they pointed out Fan's kid or brought her on stage. It was like they were trying to milk the kid for votes.

If they'd known she was going to include that, I bet they wouldn't have let her have the footage.

Idol Bosses Angry Over Fantasia TV Movie

Idol Bosses Angry Over Fantasia TV Movie | Fantasia Barrino

Although Fantasia: Life is Not a Fairy Tale – the TV movie about third-season American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's difficult past – is not due to air on Lifetime until Aug. 19, producers of the FOX talent show reportedly are already crying foul over their depiction in the biopic.

"Certainly, under no circumstances was she ever approached to be talked out of taking part in (the show)," Idol executive producer Ken Warwick tells the New York Post, in response to the tele-movie's claim that Barrino was urged to withdraw from the competition because – as an unwed mother and high-school drop-out – she was not a suitable role model.

"We knew she had a baby right from Day One, and she was always strongly tipped to win the competition because she was so good," insists Warwick, adding, "I can absolutely refute that nothing was done, or even remotely suggested to her that she shouldn't take part in the competition. It's a complete fabrication."

According to the Post, the movie opens with the then-19-year-old Barrino's coming off the Idol stage and being asked to speak with producers, who confront her with Internet postings about her suitability to compete.

"It's absolutely and totally untrue," Warwick responds. "I'm the executive producer, Nigel (Lythgoe) is the other executive producer and nobody – to my knowledge – would have said anything like that to her."

There has been no comment from Barrino on Warwick's claims.

Earlier this month, the singer told the Television Critics Association at its summer meeting that the movie – in which she plays herself – was a difficult experience for her because, among other reasons, she had to relive the rape the resulted in her having a child.

Still, she said, she believes her story can inspire others. "At the end, I began to cry and I said, 'I went through all those things, but I know why I share my life.' I'm thankful that I was able to do it," she said.

So she got pregnant from a rape?    Is that true?  I thought she got pregnant from a consensual relationship.  Anyone know the truth?

About the rape...I don't remember anything on the program saying that her pregnancy was not the result of a consensual relationship...

That's what I thought too.

I have to wonder, how much is being fictionalized to make for a "better" sob story of Fan's rise from rags to riches?

The film is based on Fantasia's inspirational autobiography of the same name, published last year.

I'm assuming that the AI producers know all these since the book was published last year; so why are they crying foul now? Why not when the book was first released?

ALL YOU HATERS AND BASHERS, TAKE HEED!!!

"One day you'll see her and you'll know what I mean, take her or leave her, she will still be the same..Only the curious have something to find, it's KATHARINE on this side."

Well, was it in the book? I didn't read it. Did you?

When her book came out, all the press was about the fact that Fan was illiterate.  Nothing was mentioned about AI trying to force her out.
