LAPD Benefits by Glowstick SeizureLos Angeles - Clueless Press International Last night, American Idol management and security seized approximately 8,000 glowsticks from fans attending the homecoming concert for local star Katharine McPhee. The glowsticks, distributed freely to fans who wanted them, were apparently to be used in lighting up Staples Arena with an orange light representing Katharine's tour color. Despite the efforts at confiscation, almost 2,000 sticks made it into the arena.
"It would have been wonderful for Katharine to look out upon the crowd and see all of those orange lights. Her fans at katharinefans.com had made quite an effort to make this a night she would always remember, but it just wasn't meant to be," said Glowmama, an organizing member from the popular fan site.
"We are not interested in whether or not the fans are able to display their affection or loyalty to a particular performer," said a management representative. "What matters to us is that our vendors are given every opportunity to profit as much as possible at each venue. As you know, they kick back a percentage of profits and it is in our best interests to ensure that anyone attempting to disrupt this money flow by distributing free memorabilia be prevented from doing so."
There were rumors that AI management made the confiscated glowsticks available to vendors, who normally sell glowsticks for $10.00 each. At a cost of $.20 per stick, the margins are indeed profitable. However, management indicated that this was not the case.
"We may be cold-hearted, but we are not without compassion," said the representative. "Knowing that the Los Angeles Police Department is in the middle of a fiscal crisis like other departments across the nation, we saw an opportunity to help them out in their time of need. Glowsticks, especially orange ones, are a valuable tool that can be used in traffic management, accident scenes and providing necessary light when prowling the rat infested sewer systems rousting homeless people.
"LAPD, like other government agencies, currently spends about $100.00 of taxpayer money for each glowstick they purchase. We knew that selling them to the LAPD for $50.00 each would not only display us as a generous, civic-minded organization, but would also help the wonderful men and women in blue continue to provide the quality of service that the citizens of this great city have come to expect."
Calls to the procurement department of the LAPD to confirm this tax-saving deal had not been returned as of press time.
