I just watched excerpts of Kat's video from the Dr. Keith Ablow Show (air date in September) on ABC. It was a great interview and very enlightening for McPhans and Idol fans alike. Several of you attended the taping of the show and posted more details for us. It was a rare glimpse into Katharine's personal life. Bear with me, but after seeing it many things began to make sense. Kat shared that as a child, she had a reading problem due to something that was wrong with her vision. It took a while to discover what was causing it so she really struggled with low self esteem. Basically people treated her like the "pretty" little girl who was stupid. She was terrified to go to school for fear of being called on to read aloud, etc., It was during this time that she began to feel like her looks was ALL she had to offer. Therefore, later when her eating got out of control and she started to put on weight, she developed Bulimia in an effort to look PERFECT - Starting the dangerous cycle of starving and bingeing. I think it's very admirable that she's trying to educate and help others with eating disorders. So many people have food issues in our society today and it's important to understand the behavior. I know some people (especially the bashers) feel that Kat has had such a privileged life and hasn't struggled with some of the problems we have. There is often deep resentment against "beautiful" people because they DO enjoy advantages in this very looks oriented world. Kat is that rare example of the FLIP SIDE of that coin. We can't always assume that just because someone is beautiful, that they are the most confident and self absorbed person in the world. Given all the horrible bashing this season, I truly believe that Kat is the most misunderstood contestant ever on Idol. Like most of you, I have really struggled to grasp all the hatefulness towards her. It makes a bit more sense to me now. It is hard to imagine that someone like Kat who is so beautiful, talented, lives in glamorous LA, appears to be financially secure and absolutely adored by her parents could actually struggle with self confidence!! (That's why the Ablow Show was such an eye opener) Couple that with all the drama that has played out in the press and you have a lot of misconceptions about her. While it has been extremely frustrating and hurtful for us to see how Kat has been treated, I feel thankful to be a part of this McPhan family because we have been able to look beyond the surface to the real Kat underneath. It isn't just her beauty and talent or the mysterious X factor that draws us to her, it's her vulnerability and that transparent desire to please that makes her so irresistible. She really isn't aware of how incredible she is. Every emotion is right there on her face and we feel the connection. All the bashing, rumors and speculation never made me doubt her for a moment. If anything, it only made me love her and want to defend her more. Do you know what I mean? I'm so very thankful that Kat has finally joined the tour. What a long awaited blessing for her and her legion of fans. Perhaps now the naysayers will begin to see her in a different light. Kat brings us such happiness and incredible music that speaks to the heart. Thanks to all of you for keeping the McPhaith! A devoted McPhan, Teilah

I feel the same way. I voted for Katharine and only Katharine from the night of April 4th. I don't know why the media is treating Katharine this way. Katharine didn't win "American Idol", she lost to Taylor Hicks. I just hope that the media just leaves Katharine McPhee's family alone.

Yes, thank you all for staying with our lovely Katharine McPhee. We've dared to defend her and we've taken an oath! And I'm so glad we're all still here! You are all such a lovely bunch.. I'd never have believe this to be true.. It's true that Kat is the most misunderstood. But it all has to do with the first impression for those people sadly. Once you see a person in a bad light, they will forever be looked upon in that manner. It's very hard to change one's perspective. That's why you see the obsessive bashing.. I can't help but say 'You Only Hurt The Ones You Love'

I've always believe in the saying "it takes one to know one." Basically, some people's capacity to understand perspectives and situations is limited by their own unfamiliarity with those perspectives and situations. In other words, the bashers are not sensitive and sweet like katharine is, and like we are.

It amazes me how we can see what we see in Katharine and love her so much, and others see her almost completely opposite. I'm inclined to believe these people have issues of their own, and that their hatred is just misguided anger at their own sorry situations. I try not to put Katharine on a pedestal and keep things in persective, after all she's only human...but just, like, the greatest human ever! I mean think of all the qualities you admire in people. She epitomizes everyone of them. She's the definition of "PERFECT".

Kat is still a news star, being in the public eye really for the first time. This is the media's way of testing the waters, I feel. Seeing how she will react and what really makes me go out and read the papers and magazines. Eventually it will all die down and then Katharine can truly shine and get ONLY the praise and love she deserves.

Kat is misunderstood because: 1. She is a beautiful girl from Southern California who went to the Boston Conservatory and who's parents dressed very nicely for each of the AI shows. To some that might present the image of someone who has money, there are many who would be jealous. 2. Circumstance on the show, made it appear that she A. Beat Chris unfairly(the presumed winner) and B. Beat Elliot(and then unforgiveably to some, was actually seen to be happy to have been in the top 2. Fans of both have been particularly nasty. They feel she took something away from their idol. 3. Deep down Taylor's fans know shes more talented. I know that some of the reason there weren't duets and more group songs during the season was that there were more "guests" who sang and took show time but I really believe that when it got to the final few, they needed a guy to win, it couldn't be Elliott(for obvious reasons) and it couldn't be Chris(he had tried out and lost in Rock Star) and Taylor can't hold his own with Kat. So his fans have caused some this. Why else would the fans of the winner be so defensive? In all past seasons, the final 2 & 3 have sung together(they didn't this year until after the finale) and in past years both have sung the same last song, why not this year. 4. Because of 2 & 3, fans who still think this is a competition and are haters have been particularly nasty to her. That would be okay if it stayed on the internet but the culture we live in believes everyone's opinon should be heard, doesn't have to have a basis in fact, doesn't have to be reasonable or well thought out, it gets to be heard, so it crosses the line to tabloid TV and then to "legitimate press & TV". Hey its the easy way and makes for compelling news, isn't it fun to be snarky? And how much easier could it be than to attack someone who couldn't speak up for herself the last 3-4 weeks. And we know the AI people won't speak up for her, they've already shown that. In a couple of years, when there have been a couple of more American Idols, there will be only 3 stars who anybody remembers: Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood & Katharine McPhee.

The people who hate Kat will always hate her. There's nothing that anyone can do to change the way that they feel. Eventually they will move on to someone else. As long as her dedicated fans support her, Kat will have a long and illustrious career.

I can't help but agree that a large share of bashing is because of Kat's percieved privileged upbringing. I say percieved because we know that Kat's family is not significantly different than millions of other households accross the country where both parents are professionals. Far from truely 'privileged', I like to think of it as the 'new' middle class. Unfortunately it seems that some of the millions of other working class and blue collar people see the perks of a nice house in a nice suburban neighborhood as not something to aspire to, but something to envy. They think that just because you can afford a few trinkets that you haven't a care in the world. Far from it, I say! In reality, professional families have the same problems as working class families, and frequently even more. More pressure, more stress, more mental illness, more divorce, more family issues. So those people bashing Kat because she is 'privileged' are not only ignorant, infantile and irrational, they're also dead wrong.

Some can be changed and some can't. She's kind. They're not. She's beautiful. They're not. She's talented. They're not. She's a good person. They're not. She has a good family. They don't She knows how to handle adversity. They don't. She knows who she is. They don't. She accepts losing sometimes. They don't. She handles criticism well. They don't. She knows how to smile. People who bash her are insecure about their own idols. Deep down, they know that Kat has got everything what it takes to succeed in the entertainment/music business. Also, most people like the "American Dream" - from rags to riches story, like Taylors. They don't like Kat, because she's from a well-to-do family from L.A. -- and some people develop stereotypes and myopia when it comes to this. They always assume that people coming from well-off families are spoiled brat. So I just let all the bashers say what they want to say. It is not good to hear all those negative things about Kat, but time well tell, and surely, they'll realize in the long run that they're wrong. As one of the poster posted here, the Beatles' and Elvis' music didn't get a warm reception in the beginning and bashers say their music is from the "Devil".... but look, they've all become the LEGEND in the music industry. I believe we're seeing the makings of another legend in Kat..

I'm happy I joined this site because I think all of you have a common thread - we look at the bright side of things, or at least open and inclined to look at the bright side of things. When we see beauty - we're happy and we want to celebrate it. Others, when they see beauty - they see life's unfairness, they see beauty as giving that person an unfair edge. When we see a millionaire - we respect that and want to first understand how he/she got there. Others, when they see a millionaire, they see dubiousness first, they see a thief. When we see success - we're fascinated and want to emulate it. Others, when they see success, they see an opportunist, they see selfishness. I think we here in this site chose the correct side.

Great posts. And I think that the factors like her obvious good looks, her seemingly privileged background, and charisma bring the worst out in other insecure, people, and fearing fans. They know, and I know they do that Kat was a huge threat.....and she had a good chance of winning...and as Simon Fuller had told her..if she came from a centralized town like Carrie, which invested 2-3 million votes a night..then she would have "easily" won. This was from the PRODUCER of the show..he DEFINITELY knows how the AI game works..what states are voting rabidly.....the focus of the votes....and who is coming up with the big numbers each night. Kat is beautiful, and she is a STAR. And people are magnetized to it. it's kind of funny to see on the Ai official boards that Kat threads are populated with a hundred or more posts full of debating fans, while there isn't a post to be seen of Taylor, or Chris, or elliot. Just in their respective folders. This tells you a lot, and which Idol truly has "it". They know she has "it", and they try to make themselves feel better...especially her female haters by making fun of her, and debasing her talent..swiping it aside and labeling it as generic voice. It was apalling to see so many women on that MJ woman's blog making fun of Kat, and even criticing her dress..saying it was somehow "slu**y", and made fun of her bosom..and a whole lot of other nasty, hateful things. All focusing on her beauty, and talent. Which just reaffirms in my mind that they they DO recognize her star power..or they wouldn't be ridiculing her so. Honestly..I hope they do continue to talk about her..spread her name...on blogs..to family....to friends.....to strangers!! Let them spread the Mcpheever...since when no one cares what an idol is doing anymore..you know that they aren't going to make it. Well you know what. Not only do her fans CARE....but hell...her haters hatefully care almost as much!! ^_^ How truly talented this magnetic girl is!! -_^

people say negative things not because of something negative outside of them, but inside of them. the mouth can only speak what the heart is full of. and that negativity is triggered when they are confronted with positive things - beauty, real talent, inner strength. people throw stones only at trees that bear fruit.

I don't get it really. I mean I can come up with reasons why people don't like her and they have nothing to do with Katharine herself. They have everything to do with what she was born into and the natural gifts she was blessed with. She was born into a relatively well-off professional family that lives in the L.A. suburbs, who sent her to private high school, the Boston Conservatory, etc, etc. So it sort of seems like she was born "privileged" in that sense. And then obviously she's got the natural gifts of her singing ability and her beauty. Yeah, so what? You jealous? I don't understand. The girl, as far as I know, hasn't done anything herself other than be born they way she was to make somebody dislike her. I never saw any behavior on Idol or anything that would turn somebody off unless they were pre-disposed to not like her because of their own jealousy or envy of her. Now, I realize I'm a totally crazy Katharine fan who probably doesn't see everything entirely clearly but....I was just appalled to see all the things people were saying about her when I started coming on the AI boards after the finale. I had no idea that she was such a polarizing figure over there. Seems like you either love her to death or you hate her. I know that's not totally accurate but it seems that way over there. I'm sure that's part of the reason Katharine got so emotional about the crowd response she received when she hit the stage in D.C. on Friday. And thankfully, the response has been good in Richmond & Greensboro as well. I mean I was worried about it, too. So...what that reveals is that these trolls are a very small minority of the country and don't really need to be acknowledged.

And the internet can give the illusion to some that it's everywhere when it isn't. Perhaps Kat got that impression for a while...which explains why she always had trepidation of going online. Once you do and read the negativity on the 'AI' board, it can cloud your judgement to some extent until you get a wider picture of the world. And getting a wider picture of the world sometimes isn't attainable. That seems strange, doesn't it, with all the technology we have available. Most people in this thread analyzed very well from a pyschological standpoint why people misunderstand (or misunderstood) Kat. Though I have to say that I blame 'AI' for that to some extent. What people don't know about a beautiful-looking, overwhelmingly talented girl who grew up in the Hollywood area will soon lead to people filling in the blanks. 'AI' should have made more effort (on the Wednesday shows) to show profiles on the contestants so the audience at home could see what kind of people they truly were. Instead, all we had were those fake archetypes the show created for each contestant. That went on and on and on for weeks while people were busy filling in the blanks with their own take on Kat's personality...along with the other contestants. They went by the way Kat carried herself (a formal way taught in university that many didn't understand) and assumed she was acting haugthy. It was an air of confidence that Kat certainly had in order to fight her lack of self-esteem that the average viewer had no clue she was fighting. It seems that when they finally had profiles showing who the contestants really were--we still didn't get a full picture. Thankfully, I knew thanks to simple deduction plus communicating with Peisha and Diane who provided information to the truth. But most people didn't know who Kat was as a person until well into June, which has only been a month. The bulimia story took it to a level that truly showed the people who would understand...and those who were too late to change. Unfortunately, because of that delay in knowing who Kat is, it created a huge riff of factions. The ones who finally understood are quite noticeable. The ones who still don't understand out of sheer ignorance--and living with the 'reflective' pyschological disorder--are off on their own little islands (or message boards). It's now come down to the fans and the hopeless ones who will never understand. We just have to let those people go now and look ahead to enjoying Kat's career. The hopeless can't be helped. It's better to just let them discover on their own if they ever do. Sometimes they do discover on their own and have that 'Eureka!' moment--as we've seen in a couple gratifying examples recently. Kat's a complex person, but I've grown to learn that there's some people astute to understanding another person--and then there's some who aren't. It's just the misfortunes of life and how envy and lack of insight into the world are a huge blight to human life.
