I am a female and I used to be an editor and photographer for a college paper (during my college years). I have to agree with many of you on the beautiful looks of Katharine. Previously, I wrote some reviews on Kat's attires which were originally posted on the AI boards, and I'd like to share them with you here. Hope you'd like to read them.

The yellow dress she wore in "I Have Nothing" has to be the HOTTEST of all attires. It speaks for itself. I could write a long review on it, alone, but I decided to let the others expound on this one. It is the most talked-about dress of AI 2006. The next one will have to be the blue dress she wore in "I Believe I Can Fly", and my 3rd would be the black dress, followed by the brown.

Kat's "hotness"
You know what is physically striking about Katharine at a distance? Her height and her broad shoulders. It's not unusual for swimmers to have shoulders like those. Swimming has helped her physical body develop that way, as she was a varsity swimmer in high school. I love that athletic look in her.

The height is very complimenting to her personality as a whole. Tall women look sexier and hotter than shorter ones because they could either wear more fabric to show off fashion and style, or bare half of their body from the toes to the thigh, through a long slit-cut dress, showing all the skin on their long legs. Some of you might chastise me if I do not include the chest or b--bs, if I choose to play PRUDISH, but I won't forget that, and I can't play prudish now. I agree, she is very well-endowed. That's what makes her HOT!

And, more at close-up-- her high cheek bones, flawless skin, big dark dreamy eyes that gleam, and perfect teeth. Now, make that face smile and you have one drop-dead gorgeous hunk of a woman. Now, hear that beautiful woman sing with her lovely, pure voice and you have a STAR! I have to describe it like a good photographer. As a woman describing another woman, it's not at all difficult, especially when it's about BEAUTY.

(When I was a young girl, I used to dream of becoming a movie director.) Will you tell me if you know of a man or woman who describes Katharine this way? Now, I'm just describing her. To like her is another thing. I love that girl.

The Blue Dress
To me, the bright blue-teal dress that she wore in "I Believe I Can Fly" is the 2nd hottest next to the yellow. Why? Watch it again. As she came out to the stage, she was luminous! The long curly dark hair contrasts the color of the dress. It almost bares her upper body- front and back. She's hot when she shows her skin in a dramatic way. Notice the front lattice design of the dress. It covers her chest but stimulates your imagination. The length goes down to her knees but showed her long perfect-shaped legs. The white and very feminine, delicate sexy pair of footwear actually compliments the dress. I thought the shoes design was fabulous, and excellent choice! They showcased her feet through and through in those hole-design sandal-straps stilleto. She had mentioned that they were not the right color for some reason as they were not available, I think -correct me there if it's wrong. I enjoyed looking at her in this outfit. She looked very sexy, very feminine, and very delicate.

The Black Dress

Katharine wearing that black dress when she performed with Meatloaf in the finale is my 3rd choice of "HOT" look, for a sensitive reason. As a matter of fact, Katharine was more provocative-looking in this outfit than when she was in the yellow dress. She looked elegant, though, since the dress was black. There is not much sensual connotation tagged on black dresses, for some reason. Notice, it had a long back center slit from the helm up to the thigh level covered with a big bow. You would only notice the slit as she walks making a partition of it, showing the back of her legs.

Now, for more hotness - If you watched the video closely, there was a split-second side-view frame-shot of her upper body that showed more surface and fullness than it showed frontally, and I understand if one would have passed out. I thought that should have been censured, but it was almost negligible, really. That is where I'm sensitive about - it was TOO HOT, and I was between ambivalence and reluctance in my admission because she did not perform alone.

In fact, I got afraid for a moment that the pressure applied by her singing could somehow overcome the tightness of the dress that the fasteners might just give up and out. I would not have been happy if that had happened, believe me - I would be embarassed actually. She is almost like a daughter to me, agewise, you see, and I would feel her shame as well if something like it turns up. Although, I go for the drama of her "hot" dresses, being her fan and beauty itself, I couldn't go all the way to the untoward shocker of bareness, especially the upper body. I could deal with the button-popping of the yellow dress because it was the lower body at stake where I am sure she is not totally bare.

"It's All Coming Back To Me Now" is one of Katharine's greatest performances. Musical-Theater-Broadway-Opera --- that's where her natural singing talent is basically gearing to, by virtue of formal education and learning.  The pop culture skills that she exudes alongside is due to her youth and varied interest.

I do appreciate beauty in its truest sense and the presentation has to be more "imaginative" than "realistic", if we got some sense of modesty left. Katharine has suceeded in the dramatics of dressing up in modest style, showing femininity and stimulating imagination, even preserving decency. With a beautiful voice, a sexy body, and as a great dresser, Katharine has so much going for her. I think I might have just summed it up.

The Brown Dress
However, I will make a statement that some of you will disagree. I find Katharine SEXY and STUNNING in the brown dress she wore in "Against All Odds". By the way, I liked that song. The way she looked in that dress was unforgettable for me. Long, straight hair, simple makeup, big round dangling earings, bare shoulders and arms, strapless tight-fitting chocolate brown dress, belt-straps on the waist and helm. Again, a sexy and stunning look for a tall brunnette. I love earthy tones and color too. I now conclude that it might been so for me because I was looking at Katharine McPhee, and how she looked that evening might not have been too far away from my personal choices. I wondered who gave her the idea.

Thanks for your comments.  -----mattsie

This is a great thread to start!  I have to agree that all three of those are probably right up there as the hottest outfits she wore all season.  She looked stunning all of the time but those three stick out in my mind too.

For me the blue dress during IBICF is the best, just because she really did look drop dead gorgeous and it was an unique outfit that made her seem not only talented, but that she could really be a fashion icon.

The yellow dress obvious must be on the tops of everyone's list.  It made her into a somewhat sex symbol I think with the wardrobe malfunction and all haha, but it definitely made an impression and was the type of thing that people will remember for season to come.

The brown one for Against All Odds is underrated, much like the song itself.  It's third on my list out of the three, but it was a very drastic change from the week before, more form fitting and less flowy, made you see more of Kat while more was covered, if that makes sense.  It's also funny to note the change from the week before when the malfunction almost caused another Janet Jackson-esque moment, and this one it looks like she's strapped into.

I don't really know what you would call it, but the outfit for Come Rain or Come Shine was another smash hit for me, along with the little black dress for IAGNBTB... that one was sexy, understated, and at the same time was not too flashy that it kept your eyes only on her and not her voice.

I think now that Kat has the opportunity to even more so, she'll become a fashion icon in no time, she has a very unique style and once she finds it, nothing can stop her.  She has had a couple not-so-great-outfits, but everyone has missteps, and the important thing for her is that I think she knows what went wrong and why (All in Love is Fair with the whole pregnant by Kevin Covais issue haha)

No matter what happens, though, Kat will definitely influence fashion.

You're right about many things here mattsie, including that some will disagree about the brown dress. It really didn't 'do anything' for me to be frank. But the other 3 dresses I totally agree with. Though I would change the order slightly...I just loved the black dress from the Meatloaf duet. As a matter of fact, I just loved EVETYTHING about that performance...except Meatloaf that is. I would rank that dress #1, the yellow dress #2, and the terquoise IBICF dress #3. It's a close call, but dang it, Kat just looks SOOOO elegant, classy AND sexy in that black dress!

5'8" is perfect, but I think average for a woman is around 5'5"-5'6".

I thought she was 5'8"? Anyhoo - I thought this was going to be a boring thread, not being very interested in fashion, but I ended up really enjoying it probably becuase it conjured up mental images of Kat. Typical guy I guess - just kind of notice the overall effect - did I like it or not? without noticing the details. Okay, so now I have something else to worry about  - finding my favourite Katharine outfit...

mattsie, my interest in fashion is about as low as you'll find, but I read your description of Kat and those dresses intently. Maybe because it was about Kat, maybe the way you wrote, probably a little of both. Suddenly I care about fashion...well at least when it comes to Kat.

I don't know if I can even recall too many little details of each dress, only the way she looked in them. And I have no idea what shoes she wore unless extra attention was called upon them. Honestly this is the first time I've ever offered an opinion in the fashion department.

Obviously the yellow dress has become a star of it's own. The black dress was amazing as was the turquoise. I also liked the silver dress from the My Destiny performance.

Ya know I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm the wrong person to comment on this. I loved reading your post though mattsie.

good afternoon mattsie dear, now you know this is one of our favorite subjects yours and mine, it will be interesting to hear from everyone else. you and i know my favorites, but i will shake up your memory a little bit:

1. the McBlack dress=my all seasonal favorite this one was. yes, there was some questionalable pick a boo going on there, but please everyone, there was still enough left behind the confinement of your imagination. she wore it with elegance and with wishing we could all look that good in that dress.
2. the McBlueish-teal dress=ahh the dress she wore for the "I didn't pick it" song. she radiated glamour in this dress, she was just dropped dead gorgeous in this one.
3. the McRed dress=sorry, mattsie, i'm adding my own to your list. this is the one she wore in the Bacharach medley. sorry we didn't get to see enough of her in that medley, but just enough to say wow "who is that glamorous movie star/singer?" once again she captured elegance and just enough to say that she looked like she came out of the 50's, 60's era.

this katharine hope mcphee has once again brought to all of us who love her, the chance to see elegance, style and glamour once again finally after the styles recently coming from the "spears, aguileras, etc. "  hopefully, she doesn't change that look.

See I was on the verge of breaking down

There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first it's got to start inside of me.

the red dress was worn during the Bacharach medley towards the end of the finale.

i guess, that's what i really appreciate about Kat ---it's her elegance with mild conservatism, and to put it in maddie's words - "looking like the 50's and 60's".

i was a teenager in the 70's and i used to wear those styles myself. i see a lot of myself in Kat, modesty aside. don't get me wrong here. i'm honest enough to admit something here now. i went to a boarding school for 8 years on top of that. didn't have the chance to attend a lot of concerts. it was a different kind of fun ---studying fun. see, that alone is to make one conservative. but not for long for me, really. i began to look at life differently in college, being more mature and confident.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.

hello there guys, thanks for all your nice comments, and the time you took to read the reviews. amanda, that is a nice montage of kat's pictures with a rainbow over it. you're very creative. bigshady and phenomenon, i can surely understand from your male point of view. maddie, the red dress was hot, i will agree. it's just too bad that she wore it towards the end of the finale. we didn't have enough time to stare at her that long. hotbrunette, bcollan, gato, Yki, spotlighter, beret7, my_idol, thanks to you too.---mattsie

I don't recall seeing this red dress at all. I assume it the same one as your avy. Do you have any more pictures of it? Not many people can get away with wearing sizzling hot red...of course Kat can. Also the red shirt in the Phil Collins song...uh blouse I guess

There's only a couple shots of the red dress on wire image, and this is the only one of her by herself.

This one would be nice if you crop out the others.

Most definately Maddie. I had forgotten about that one, and it most definately is stunning on her.

Some would say that Kat was born 50 years too late. Her sound, her looks, her style would fit right in with Liz Taylor, Kim Novac, Grace Kelly. Actually Kat reminds me quite a bit of a young Liz (think Butterfield 8). Of course Liz couldn't sing like an angel!
