My personal is the first, because it solidified for so many that she not only still deserved to be on Idol, but that she was THE Idol, no matter what happened.  No one to this date has received such praise for a song, being deemed the best single performance of the show to date by Simon.  It made me love Kat even more, and has now become her signature song.  So definitely the first.

It's also the most memorable.

The first SOTR has become a legend in its own time. The single greatest performance in the shows history, and for me, the best performance I've ever seen, period.

It's really incredible every time Katharine performs it, giving it a different touch each time. I absolutely love them all. I was actually watching some tape I had of her appearances earlier today so the Early Show and Today Show performances is very fresh in my mind. I think of the non Idol performances of SOTR my favorite might be the one from Trump, er Regis and Kelly...or maybe the Today Show one...ahhh idk, but the original is still the best. That moment will stay with me forever.

I loved the one on IDOL and was disappointed the one on the CD was different. After the 2nd time listening on the CD it is by far the best musically. Some of the notes in there can bring you to tears.

I just had to mention the "View" performance. It was extra special because we missed her sooo bad and just to see her back again was unbelievable. Even with her voice not 100% it was still amazing...another great memory.

This is another one of those "out of character" things that Katharine's bringing out in me (besides the Elvis, haha). I'm going on and on about SOTR...that is so weird...I never would've thought...

For me personaly, it has to be the first performance. She was under so much pressure at the time, with Chris being eliminated and all the backlash. It was like she had to prove she still belonged there. From the first note i was mesmerized, very few songs bring me to tears; but she did with that performance. It was this version i believe, which told everyone that she was the Idol, regardless of the actual outcome. I also believe it cemented her place in AI history, as having the best performance in the show's history.

Oh gaw, here I go again.  On that first performance, when she first started to sing acapella, OMG, I can't even begin to describe it.  I don't know if I was caught off gaurd or what.  I was like putty in her hands.

For me, its the her first performance of OTR in idol. The was the big moment and the impact is so strong it left me off my seat. It was the acapella that did me in. In that moment, time froze by. All I could hear was her voice, the clarity of it and the emotion taht is so full that you've got to experience it once in a lifetime. I am very lucky to be there. She is heaven sent.

Right now, my favorite is the one she did at her first idol concert, not because of her voice but because of when she said, "And the dream, the dreams, that you dare to dream, I'm telling you, they really do come true!" I started bawling!!! Yay for kat!!!

I'm on the west coast. I ruined the first performance for myself by reading about it on the boards as it was happening so I already knew it was something great and what the judges had said about it before I saw it. Still great but if only I'd seen it without hearing about it before hand! One of life's great regrets.

So the closest I can get to that was watching The View the other day. I had been waiting for it for weeks, assuming she would sing SOTR. There were those fears in back of mind - what if she has lost it? So to see her do it live without knowing what was going to happen (Well okay, it was still taped, but I hadn't heard anything about it before hand this time) and in such a subdued and moving way, with the little bits of strain in her voice only seeming to add more emotion to it - I wept through the whole performance and every time I've played it back and I will now when I play it one more time before I go to bed.

I was never quiet sure - Simon said "Best performance of the competition to date". Did he mean the whole 5 years of AI or just the 5th season? Has he ever clarified that? I forget what he said at the finale performance of it - same thing?

Anyway, there are no bad versions. I really enjoyed the OPs selection of the Early show performance. Hadn't seen that for a while. That is nice too because you get a lot of chat before and afterwards to give the occasion context.

I also love the R & K performance - the notes seems so pure and solid and perfect and long and loud too. And Kats was her adorable goofy self afterwards. Two handed wave!

I suppose this will always be her signature song. The words could have been written for her too - "dreams really do come true" - how many people get their dreams to come true like has happened to Katharine? From nothing a year ago to most beautiful and talented performer in the world. WOW!

Best of all is that through all this fame and soon fortune she remains a genuinely nice person.

I believe... and I can't swear this is as it truly was because I'm only going by memory, and I have discovered that sometimes I make things up... that when Simon said "Best performance of the competition to date," he was referring to Season 5, since obviously the other 4 seasons are not part of Kat's "competition."

As for the finale, I believe (same disclaimer attached) that he actually backpedalled some and added, "... for you."

"Haha! I love your comments. You just wait there will be more of Kat in Glasses! ha! I love the pic of Nena in glasses. DID you do that? Clever is so! XX kat"

The very very first performance by far....the Top 3... At that time she wasnt sick of the song and it was a very genuine performance! It gave me goosebumps and I wasn't even very into American Idol. After that I bought 10th row tickets to the concert in Nashville just to see Katharine! Im like obsessed now haha

My favorite was definitely the top 3 performance. That was the first time we ever heard it, so I didn't know what to expect and it blew me away.

It would be both performances in the last two weeks of "American Idol". When Simon picked "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", for Katharine during "Judges Choice Week", I thought I would hear the Kimberley Locke version from season 2. Wrong.

When she started with, "When all the clouds," I had never heard that before. Everyone knows that Judy Garland in "The Wizard Of Oz," Judy as Dorothy began with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", Tony Bennett is the only person I know that could the original first line of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".

Katharine was under extreme pressure that night after Chris Daughtry was thrown off the show the previous week. Katharine not only gave the performance of the season, she repeated it again the following week. Two of the best performances in the 5 years "American Idol" has been on the air. Although, Katharine didn't win, she should have. My only wish is to see Katharine sing it live in front of me in concert.

I think it's a given, atleast to me, that her first performance of the song is a favorite since it was such a great moment, but I personally really like last nights performance just b/c she seemed like she was having so much fun.

Well I like them all but the top 3 was my favorite during the competition.  Post-idol I actually like the View the best.  I liked the version, and the vulnerability in her voice

My favorite is the first performance, the Top 3.. We didn't expect it to be that amazing, it made me so proud!! She also proved to everybody that she deserved to be there!

After that she just made every version of OTR (from others singers, of course) sound bad! Well, I should be used to that by now!!

Pheenom, I know what you mean about the disappointment in "ruining it" for yourself.  I was in London during the Top 3 week and forced my mom to call and give me a full report the night of the show and the following evening for the results.

I was astounded at everything that had happened and couldn't wait to get back and watch the videotapes, though it was kind of anticlimactic to already know what was to come.

The first one, definitely. I was sitting there going "Come on Kat, you can do it." and she just NAILED IT. I was so happy for her, she really needed that to shut everyone up.

her album is going to be awesome, thats a feeling I have. You are going to hear her do, something different, that will really suit her voice, its just takes time for the producers to fiqure it out.

The first is my favorite for all the previously mentioned sentimental reasons BUT the CD single version is my favorite to listen to...that note on "rain" is just a one-of-a-kind amazing thing, I like the phrasing better, and I love the little extra "signature" touches she added.

You can only hear something for the first time once.

That's why, for me, the first Idol version will always be the definitive one. Even though the single version is more technically polished, with Kat's beautiful hold on "rain," and The View's version is the most touching because of its circumstance, nothing can duplicate that thrill of hearing it for the first time. I will never, never forget just being transfixed and transported by what Kat did with that tune, and when the judges praised her to the skies, I went through the roof!

I suppose there is the possibility that the OTR I hear in Columbus could supersede the AI version with Kat actually being, ya know .... IN the room! I'll let y'all know in 12 days!
