What a difference a day makes...
Kat's stellar performance, coupled with Chris's trip to the bottom 2, has equalized the odds of the top 3 contestants. Chris still leads, but drops significantly (1:3.3, 30%) while Kat and Taylor are tied for 2nd (1:3.5, 28%). Kellie hangs in at 1:7.1(14%) and Paris & Elliott bring up the rear at 1:21 (5%)

Tue 4/25 Odds To Win 2006 American Idol
05:00 PM 8 Chris Daughtry    3.300
  9 Katharine McPhee    3.510
  10 Kellie Pickler    7.100
  12 Elliott Yamin    21.000
  21 Paris Bennett    21.000
  23 Taylor Hicks    3.510

That's good news...and with 'love songs' next week, I have to believe Kat's got another favorable draw and should be able to overtake the lead...

How do they determine the odds (not a gambler..) is it driven by the amount of money being bet on each contestant, or does Vegas (or whoever) set some kind of arbitrary point for the odds based on…what…their feelings?…assessment of the performances…

^Well, both ways actually. Oddsmakers tweak the odds according to how they feel the bettors will bet, then the odds are adjusted according to how much is actually bet on each contestant. The more money bet, the lower the odds and the lower the payout. I don't bet either- I just follow the odds because it is a solid indicator of public perception.

Thanks...so they cast the line, bait it with odds to attract bets, then reduce the odds to suit their 'risk' of losing assessment...?!

I agree...in the absence of any (credible) published voting results...these guys would be as good a barometer of the public opinion as anyone...they have a pure and transparent vested interest and motivation to stay on top of the likely outcome..
