06/23/2006 2:59 PM Alert

First, please wait until the 27th to download the songs. Downloading early MIGHT NOT count towards her first week sales.

I e-mailed Keith @ askbb@billboard.com to finally have our questions answered since RCA and 19 mentioned that it's a double A-sided single.

This is his replies...

"Either way you purchase "My Destiny" at the iTunes store -- by either selecting "Buy Album" (at the top of the page) or, "Buy Song" at the bottom, your purchase will still count towards her ranking on The Billboard Hot 100."

I then asked him: Just "My Destiny"? How about the other single, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"? Will the sales of the second song not count towards her single sales?

Keith said:

"There are two ways of buying "My Destiny."

First, you can buy it as a SINGLE.

A single, for the purpose of this question, are one of the following:

1) Go to Target or Wal-Mart or Amazon.com and actually buy the CD single

OR

2) You select "Buy Album" on the iTunes store where you buy the "My Destiny" single for $1.98, which includes "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as its "b-side" (or some could say, "bonus track").

+ + +

You can also buy "My Destiny" as a single TRACK.

You would do this, for example, at the iTunes store by selecting "Buy Song," where you only buy the single track for 99 cents.

If you only choose to buy "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," as a single track by itself, it will of course not count towards the placement of "My Destiny" on the chart. "Somewhere" can chart on its own, because you are able to buy it as a separate purchase.

Just how this week, Taylor debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100 with "Do I Make You Proud," and at the same time, also re-entered at No. 94 with "Takin' It To The Streets." The latter song charted this week because many people bought it as an individual track, giving it enough sales to chart by itself."

And finally, I said/asked: According to http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1533792/2...607/story.jhtml and other sources:

"RCA Records and 19 Recordings Limited, are calling a double A-sided single (instead of the usual A-side and B-side)."

Since this is the case, what if "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" gets more digital downloads than "My Destiny"? Will the physical CD sales count towards the billboard debut of "Rainbow" or "My Destiny"?

Keith replied: "They may be calling it a double A-sided single, but those don't really exist anymore on The Billboard Hot 100. We haven't had a double A-sided single on the Hot 100 since the 1990s.

"My Destiny" will be the single that charts on The Billboard Hot 100."

Hmmm....Keith said My Destiny will be the single that charts, or is that the conclusion that you drew, ejoyr?

I know Keith's the inside man and all, but I was under the impression that BMG had decided to push OTR more since it's listed first on the cover.

Plus, as Keith Mentions, since My Destiny and OTR can pe purchased seperately from each other (something that wasn't possible in the old days) the two songs would HAVE to chart seperately, as in Taylor's case.

Maybe Billboard hasn't had a double-A side since the 1990s, but they have one now. I'm not sure if the Hot 100 has different rules than the other charts, but in the case of double-A sided singles, Billboard has historically charted the tracks seperately.

What MIGHT happen, however, is that the two songs could be combined so they chart together. That's what happened with the Beatles when they issued "Come Together" and "Something." They charted seperately at first, with neither hitting number one, until Billboard combined them and they hit number one at the same time.

Everything that's in dark red is from Keith.

This is basically the conclusion of his e-mails (message from CU4idol of IDF):

Using "buy album", sales will count toward "commercial single sales-Digital". This will help her on Billboard HOT100, POP100, TOP5 single sales chart.

Buying only "My Destiny" song, sales will count toward "Digital Track & sales". This will help her on BB HOT100, POP100 and HOT Digital sales chart. The sales of MD will combine to "commercial single sales" both physical & digital.

Buying only "SOTR" song, sales will count toward "Digital Track & sales". This will help her only the song SOTR on the BB chart, but the sales of SOTR will not combine to commercial single sales.

If you want to boost her position in HOT100, you need to buy either MD or buy album.

Okay, I just got another reply.. I asked if it is best to buy the two songs separately to help both songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100...

Keith's reply: Like I said before, if you buy the SINGLE -- either the "CD single" or by using the "Buy Album" button at iTunes -- it will count as one SINGLE sale for "My Destiny."

If you and the fans really want to get "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" to chart, you need to buy that track separately, by using the "Buy Song" option, for example, at the iTunes store.

ejoyr, thank you for all the great insider info. Great digging there.

It sure would be great if perhaps you could find the answer to this question also.

This comes from Roberta Z. in Brazil (=^.^= #1306): Do you know when [if] people outside the USA are gonna be able to buy kat´s single??

That does carify it somewhat, thank you. What I'm still unclear on, however, is what happens if you buy the physical CD single. That counts toward MD instead of OTR? If so, why?

Hi Vadia! =)

I believe they can through amazon.com and iTunes. I've heard from some fans that they are going to buy the single/s through iTunes knowing that the physical CD won't be available in their countries. If they want the CD, they would have to go to amazon.com or another website store that can deliver internationally. The shipping price might be a little high though.

He said that it will count towards MD since it is THE single. He said that although RCA and 19 are saying that it's a double A-sided single, that SOTR is just a bonus track (just like Taylor's TITTS). I know where you're coming from though knowing that Kat and her management are promoting SOTR more than MD.

Thanks for the clarification! This is what I was attempting to state with my first posting -- that buying separately would benefit her more than using "Buy Album" ... even if they chart separately, it's a better deal. Why not have it count twice if you're paying the same? Sorry it caused confusion, but I'm thankful you cleared it up.

Billboard changes chart methodology frequently to keep up with the market -- it is, after all, an industry publication. The digital singles revolution has brought significant change in the past two years, so even though they once combined "double A-sided" singles it makes sense that they would no longer do so.

"SOTR" could still chart if it gets enough downloads -- that should be our new goal: TWO debuts in one week, with one at #1!

Thanks again -- especially to Keith, who is really just the nicest guy (I e.mailed him, too).

Here's an important point: 80% of the Billboard Hot 100 score comes from radio airplay...only 20% is from actual sales. So that means SOTR can chart well with sufficient radio airplay. And it emphasizes the importance if requesting Kat on your local radio station.

Why not stop by the Radio Request Crew forum for tips on requesting?
