Hey peeps.

As you know radio airplay plays a very important role in providing popularity for an artist (http://www.katharinefans.com/Forums/tabid/92/forumid/4/postid/22237/view/topic/Default.aspx). Kat's music career success will not only be determined by sales figure, but also radio airplay. Getting her songs heard on the radio is important, plus who doesnt want to hear Kat's beautiful voice on the radio all the time?

We are setting up a Radio Request forum for the purposes of promoting Kat's music and helping her songs to get into the major music charts. Since both "My Destiny" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" are Kat's A-sided tracks, so I have a question for y'all:

Which song should we focus on? Or which song should we give more priority to? Or we request 2 songs at the same time?

We admire Katharine and want to do our best to support her in anyway possible. So by the time the new forum is launched, I hope you guys will show support and join in. This is something that everyone can contribute to help Kat's music career.

To be great is to be misunderstood.

Since the point is to promote Katharine, maybe we should just ask for her and let individual stations decide what they think their listeners would like best. Or do they have to have a specific request in order for it to be counted? This would be easier if I liked My Destiny better as a song...although I admit I'm feeling friendlier toward it the more I listen to it.

Rhine is there a time of day when airplay is more important?  For example going to work and coming home traffic?

My opinion would be to concentrate on 'My Destiny'. It has the potential for doing quite well on top 40 and AC stations, and climbing up well into the Hot 100. SOTR, I think, can pretty much take care of itself with minimal promotion. Everyone already knows it, and most people like it, but it's not going to get alot of play outside of Jazz and AC stations. Of course we could do both: just call top 40 stations and request MD and AC stations to request SOTR.

Every airplay is important as every airplay counts. Of course, it would be better if her songs get played at prime time, because that means more people will get to hear her song.

We do need some strategies in radio requesting, but right now we need to take things step by step, because radio requesting isn't a temporary but a LONG TERM project. I'll put all important requesting tips and the Top40 stations list in the forum once its setup. You guys can then offer your strategies, requesting tips, thoughts on how to help Kat's music career, and other related info in the forum. We really need dedicated members to help in this upcoming forum for promoting Katharine.

Sounds good! I will get Top 40 stations and AC stations lists completed asap.

Actually I wonder which single her company wants to promote? Kat sings SOTR in almost every TV appearance/public event, so does it tell us something? But I do agree with Bcollan that My Destiny has the potential for doing well on Top 40 stations.

Anymore thoughts?

i think we should focus on MY DESTINY because SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW is popular with her fans, but i don't think it is what the radio stations people are looking to play on their stations.MY DESTINY is a song that sounds like the songs you hear alot on the radio stations today.plus it has more meaning for kat i think.S.O.T.R got her to the finals, but MY DESTINY represents what she been through to get there. MY DESTINY means more to her,and it should mean more to her fans as well.besides it's a beautiful song that in my opinion doesn't get the credit it deserves PEACE.

I dunno, guys. While I understand your logic in pushing "My Destiny," I'm not sure that's the best way to get Kat going in the long run.

Not a SINGLE person I have talked to who is not a big Kat fan like us cares for My Destiny, but most everyone loved her take on Rainbow. When it comes to the casual fans, "Rainbow" is the reason they will buy the single, not Destiny. Therefore, you have to attract people via radio with something they are more likely to buy. If people hear "Destiny" on the radio instead of OTR, I fear most people will say "Mehh....not gonna buy that." And that could get Kat's sales off on the wrong foot ... with the possible eventual effect being that people may not buy the album when it comes out.

I agree that My Destiny "needs" more help than OTR, but that, in my opinon, is exactly why it should NOT be the focus. If even some Kat fans, such as myself, have been slow to warm to Destiny, I'm very concerned that the general public will be even harder to convince.

I'm not saying Destiny shouldn't be played ... I'd like to see it given a fair shake. My impression of the popular consensus could be wrong.

But consider this: as screwy as Amazon's charts are, I find it VERY telling that once OTR was added to the single, the sales shot up. If for no other reason, simple common sense dictates that when it comes to singles, you push the better song. I think most everyone, Kat fan and casual fan alike, would agree that's OTR.

I think both are very important and we should request 2 songs at the same time. First, "My Destiny" is not really that bad. When first listen to this song, it normally doesn't grab you right away but the more you listen, it will start to grow on you. This is the reason why it needs tremendous amount of airplay. Now, only her dedicated fans like it but most of the other people have never had a chance to hear it. Airplay will help broadcast this song to a much wider population, and eventually more people will like it and buy the CD. Remember when it was first being sung by Kat, most of us didn't like it either. But now it starts to grow on us and many of us admitted that they had changed their minds.

"Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is Kat's bread and butter, or you can call it her signature song. It had been sung on every interview and occasion including the JCPenny Jam Concert and the replacement of the National Anthem in the Princess Cruise appearance. Its significance can't be ignored. In fact, I believe Kat's rendition of SOTR is the best I've heard from this song. Eva Cassidy's version used to be my favorite (that's why I have her album) but not anymore. By singing it with the best rendition and voice, she might have a chance to actually revive this old song and make it a brand new experience to the listeners. There have been lots of examples where people rearranged and sang an outdated song and made it famous and popular again. If she can do that with SOTR, it's going to be another big hit for her. In order to help make it happen, plenty of airplay is the only option. She needs to show everyone that her SOTR is the best among all versions.

'My Destiny' is now the official earworm song of the year. If you're familiar with that term--'earworm' means a song that gets into your head and goes in endless repeat mode. Of course, Kat makes any song she sings an earworm song, which puts a different spin on just a song and an artist who interprets it.

Well, I think the suggestion to push 'My Destiny' on Top 40 radio stations--and then suggesting 'OTR' on Adult Contemporary stations--is a good two-pronged plan. Even so, the 'OTR' single was arranged (with a pop drum rhythm during the chorus) to specifically have a shot at Top 40. It's worth a shot to push it along with 'MD' at the Top 40 stations just to see how well it goes. Once it gets played on the most popular Top 40 stations, it might get requested a lot. I truly think it has a powerful magic to it that the young demographic would still go for. It might not stay around very long on Top 40, but there's still great potential there for it to reach #1 during the Fourth of July time (which is almost upon us). If Kat hit #1 with that song--she'd make musical history and steal the thunder (or is it lightning?) from Judy Garland taking it to the top 65+ years ago.

I just looked up a site that gives all the radio stations in Oregon. There's lots of AC stations in my local area--and even more Top 40 stations. But the ratio is probably smaller on the AC stations than other states might have. A lot of Oregon stations are Public Radio, Country or Oldies. The 'Oldies' stations (I hate that term) usually falls under Adult Contemporary at times--especially when they play Michael Buble or Rod Stewart's foray into standards. Perhaps those places can be reached too to play 'OTR.'  But, I'm familiar with all the AC and Top 40 stations around Portland and vicinity. They'd be easy to contact.

Over on the 'AI' board, a little-thought-of demographic was brought up: Radio Disney. Their website has a place to request songs, and a lot of people wrote in for 'My Destiny.' They play inspiring pop ballads like that all the time. And, Kat apparently has a growing teen fanbase that I didn't realize she had. If Disney takes on the song, Kat would probably feel like a veteran compared to the ages of the artists they usually play there.

Anyway, 'My Destiny' is stuck in my head daily now. It's actually a compelling song once you dissect it and Kat's performance. 'OTR' has that same haunting quality that can work in a lot of different radio formats.

Is it possible to push 2 songs at the same time or is it better for us to focus only on 1 song? Everybody have pointed out great points in this thread.

To me, maybe we should push more on MD. Not many people likes it when they heard it for the first time but I'm sure that it will grow on them as long as they listen to it over and over again. The bad news is that I don't think non-McPhans will request that song and therefore we are the ones who have to request them.

On the other hand, even though SOTR do not need as much advertising as MD, that doesn't mean we can just leave it out from the radio requests. We should also call in ocassionaly to request them as well.

I know that I will be requesting both songs in my country once her single is released. I wanna make Indonesia got infected with McPheever. HAHAHA ... LOL!

While SOTR is not your typical pop record, that doesn't mean it can't be a hit. It's a beautiful sounding record and would sound great on the radio. It is Katharine's signature song. I'm afraid many people would associate Katharine's losing the AI competition with My Destiny...

Yeah, I'll try to push both songs here in LA. I might push "My Destiny" a little bit more because yeah, a lot of people know about it so maybe "My Destiny" needs a lift.

I for one choose My Destiny. It got me the first time I heard the studio version. For adult contemporary stations, SOTR is fine.

i think we should push SOTR and ocassionally my destiny since everybody relates SOTR to katharine right away, like everybody said, its her signature song and she does a beautiful job. Personally, i do think SOTR can make it to the top 40 as long as it gets equal amount of requests as other songs. So lets do our best for both.

Having thought about it a little more, I better understand the logic of pushing for both songs if you're trying to appeal to different markets. But as Gregorianchant astutely observed, OTR was arranged to give it a more contemporary feel. And I still believe an OTR push will be better for Kat in the long run than an MD push, for reasons I outlined previously.

However, I think both songs appeal more to the AC market than the top 40, which is not necessarily worrisome, as long as the AC chart placement is high. One thing I have to wonder with Rainbow is if top 40 will go for a song with such a long a capella opening. Top 40 tends to have the heebie-jeebies about playing a tune with any kind of unusual arrangement.

Thanks guys for all the input. Much appreciated. And y'all have very good points.

So since both songs have their own supporters, I think the best way is we will push 2 songs at the same time.

We request SOTR on AC stations, and
we request MD on Top-40 stations.

Does this sound right?

Is this the same thing the Street Patrol people are doing? Two separate projects or just another case of same info, different threads, and we need to coordinate. I've been trying to track down radio stations in the Detroit Metro area but so far not getting very good info on-line.

Sorry, I guess I heard "Soul Patrol!" once too often and it burned itself into my brain. I mean the Street Team stuff from the other thread. They're recruiting people to do all kinds of PR work such as calling radio stations and requesting air
