Anyone notice this in the official press release for Kat's 'single'? Kat's management company, 19 Entertainment, called her new single 'double-A sided' in a press release about her signing with RCA records. Normally a single has an A side which is the 'single' released for radio airplay, while the B side is filler. This terminaology dates back to when singles were release on 45RPM vinyl records which physically had 2 sides. By describing Kat's single as 'double-A', it is implied that both songs will be promoted for airplay. I've never heard of this happening before! McPhee, the runner-up on season five of "American Idol," will have her first single released on June 27. The double-A sided "Over the Rainbow" / "My Destiny" /will be available in stores and as a digital download. McPhee performed both songs on the finale of "American Idol," the third most-watched TV program of the year, after the Superbowl and the Academy Awards. At one point during the live broadcast, 43 million viewers were watching the season finale. "My Destiny" was written by Harry Sommerdahl, Hanne Sorvaag, Tim Baxter and "Over the Rainbow" is the classic song written by Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg for the motion picture "The Wizard of Oz."

Good catch on the press release, Bill! The practice of double A-sides isn't new, although it is kinda rare these days. It happened to the Beatles a few times, with "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" and "Come Together"/"Something" as examples. All four of those songs charted individually. Ususally what would happen, though, is that one song tends to get a bit more airplay than the other, and radio airplay does factor into chart placement. My guess would be that Rainbow actually gets played more on the air, given that received a lot more acclaim, and it's the reason most casual fans would buy the single, as evidenced by what happened with the presales on Amazon. But this is one thing I love about Kat: She's a bit of a throwback! It looks like her debut chart hit will be a 67-year-old song, and she's resurrected the old practice of double A-sides! On top of that, her beauty most reminds me of the great actresses of the golden age, a la Liz Taylor and Ava Gardner, and that other great Katharine, Hepburn. Audrey, too! PS Makes me wonder .... Kat is the only other "Kathy" who spells her name like Kate Hepburn did? Wonder if Hepburn was the inspiration for that? Given how Kat and her family love the classic entertainers, I wouldn't be surprised.
