I notice that  william hasn't posted since the 9th of April.  I hope he starts his classic look back at Katharine's performances  thread soon or I'm going to have to play the part of usurper and start one myself!

This was a big week for Katharine, she sang  Someone To Watch Over Me from the Great American Songbook with Rod Steward as the mentor!

This was a huge performance for Katharine (this still is a shameless plug for the HD version in the Media Forum) and it won her a lot of diehard fans!

Maybe he went away for spring break. Many NJ school systems are closed this week. Give him until Sunday to get back in town, then usurp away.

Okay, I am here. There has been some breaking over the last couple of days on the firing of one Don Imus from his radio program, for some remarks that I can't do here.

Welcome to Week 6 of our look back of Katharine's "American Idol" journey from last season.

This week, as CRB has mentioned, we are looking at the "Great American Songbook", with Rod Stewart as guest mentor.

Katharine did "Someone To Watch Over Me", written by the Gershwins, George & Ira.

What do you remember of that performance?

Now, we can begin.

Well, for one thing, Katharine was last to sing that night.

I was very impressed with that performance, and she sat on the floor right in front of the judges, it was almost like Frank Sinatra's performance, who actually did the sing, arranged by Nelson Riddle, of "Send In The Clowns", written by Stephen Sondheim for the "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back" special in 1973.

Katharine showed me a sparkle that night, that I will remember.

This was the only video of hers posted on AI for a while so I watched it more than the rest. This was the first of several memorable performances on the floor (BHACT and SOTR)! She owned this song. How could you not love her after this?

That is actually einsteinium from Stage 6's vid but I'll take credit.

Here is a link for a download of a true HD version, that is absolutely amazing though.  I found this at the Superior Pictures board and got it from there,  the quality of this clip  is amazing:

If you don't have sound get this AC3 filter for the audio and run it.

I think this is one of the performances that really transcends an "American Idol" performance, much like her duet with Meatloaf at the Finale,  and Katharine hit real emotional chords that resonated with the audience at home.

The "hair pulleed back" look wasn't repeated in her run on Idol, at least to this extent,  as she went with the lions mane of curled extensions for most of the rest of the performance nights.  The business suit look went well with the hair and created a very business-like look that was in sharp contrast to the intimate and emotional nature of the lyrics and vocal.

I think with this performance Katharine McPhee created a nation of wanna-be shepherds just waiting with bated breath to take this particular "little lamb" into their flock.   For me this was a standout performance that was solid in every way.  Home run?  Oh, yeah.

Much like Rod Stewart there's not much I can say about this one.  It's fantastic!!

Geez, I still get sweaty watching this performance.    Best performance in AI history!

Well it was the best until she sang a little ditty called SOTR.

This is the moment I said "ok, I'm in love" hahaha. But honestly, it was perfect. I watched this performance over and over and over and over, well it was the only one I had, because this is where I started to record her performances (I'm poor so I used my VCR). Of course thanks to you guys I have a better quality of it. Btw, in Mexico it was shown without the blue thing with her name and the numbers on it, so you can see her face completly.

2nd best performance EVER!!! I've cried a total of 4 times watching idol.....1st time was when Tamyra sang A House is not a Home, 2nd was Fantasia's Summertime and this was the 3rd time.....of course you already know what the BEST performance ever was and the 4th (and last) time I cried watching a beautiful idol performance. Man o Man (as Paula says) - this was IT......she was soooo in the zone here. I really thought - "Oh God - why is she singing this? no one can sing this as well as Linda Ronstadt" - but I was wrong - this was a PERFECT 10 performance and kneeling on the stage, singing into the camera.....wow!  WOW!!! WOW!!! Sometimes words cannot describe the experience of those 2 minutes......I was simply overwhelmed by her performance. Flawless, beautiful, perfect - I knew I was witnessing something very, very special.

.....only one word.....

This performance is still one of my favorites ... well ... for one I really really love this music genre ... and better yet, Kat is singing it...
She sat on the steps ... in front of Simon ... and then she sang so beautifully ... (her necklace is super beautiful too).... her dad cried ... then judment time ...

"I really think Katharine that you made the others look like good amateurs. It was completely and utterly in a different league. You look like a returning pro. I thought it was so much better than the others. It was great!"

I totally agree with Simon on that statement ... he says it all! huhuhuhuhu .... I love it I love it I love it!!! hahahaha ...

Yeah nan, Linda left some big boots to fill, but Kat had no problem at all. In Kat's short career she has succeeded in taking on two heavyweight icons,  Ronstadt and Garland, and walking away to tell about it.

Yes, I love his "transcripts" because it isn't only what the say., it is those little extra interpretations of the actions.

Simon: Katharine should go home, she wasn't very good.  ( Katharine shoots dagger with her eyes at the Limey's heartless chest.)

Well, sort of like that.  sj, we need you!

Another memorable week for Kat (and myself involved in the Kat community) that week last year. On the 'AI' board, I remember this was the first week I joined in giving the group suggestions for what Kat should sing that week. It's also the first week I remember Peisha sending those blanket messages to everybody (posted right here back when KMF was the "true" official site) and her mentioning that Kat was raised with the Great American Songbook and would likely excel. We all knew that, so we knew she'd knock it out of the park with whatever song she chose. Nevertheless, one of my first suggested picks for her was 'I Only Have Eyes For You.'  I don't remember why I chose that (it seems like there was a select list as there usually is)--but, as we all remember, she initially was going to sing that very song (out of several options).  At the Rod Stewart meeting, I could tell that she wasn't really connecting with the song. It was wise of her to change her mind several times on this category to get just the right song. And, yes, Kat chose the ultimate one with 'STWOM.'

This was also the first time Kat used the camera to her best advantage. That prompted a lot of old-timers on the 'AI' board to bring up the olden days of variety shows and how her use of the camera in her performance brought back a lost art form of communicating with the audience watching at home. I noticed that too...and a lot of younger generations probably hadn't seen a contemporary girl singer looking so longingly into the camera and appear to be singing 'STWOM' right to YOU. Kat really mastered that type of communication across a TV screen. If you notice in recent years, most performers who perform on TV hardly ever look directly into a camera as if looking into the eyes of someone.

And then there's Kat's utter sincerity on her face while she sang into the camera. Sure, it's acting, but you know Kat still actually believed every word of what she was singing. That's what made it even more compelling for those who'd never seen anything like it before. Her performance truly reminded us that there's very few performers today who can connect to an audience on such a profound level.

Of course, we knew Kat was there to stay after this performance. I'm sure her voting totals were tremendous that week too..but 'AI' (wrong or right) never reveals the cumulative voting tallies.

I think this was when (for the sake of sheer entertainment)--the producers decided that Kat would get put up on the pedestal this week...and then taken down the next. The following week ('IHN') is still one of the weirdest reactions from the judges ever for a performance. Sure, it's still up for debate the reasoning behind it. Nevertheless, I believe it to be all calculated...or just coincidental individual (biased) opinion.

Anyway, I remember the excitement level on Kat's 'AI' board folder was fever pitch that week. That's when I knew I'd probably still be in the Kat community a year later and way beyond. Say hello to Nostradamus himself.

OK, OK, OK.  I was meaning to do this the other day and then things happened and well here I am at 2:30 AM on a Saturday morning posting this.

A few thoughts about this one first.  As a pure vocal performance I think this was Katharine's best of the season.  It didn't have quite the impact of SOTR because of the stage of the competition we were at (I don't think we were super worried she was going home at this point despite the scare Top 10 week) but I just love this.

And....I know it's sappy but when you really think about the lyrics of this song.  Doesn't it fit Katharine's real life?  I know not everyone gets the Nick thing but to her heart he carries the key.    I want that key!  How did he find it?  The mysteries of the universe.

What else...I think that covers it.  Here's your transcript.  Wow, I'm glad people like these...at least all that work wasn't totally useless.

Oh one more thing.  One of my favorite moments of the season is the little snippet of Katharine singing "The Way You Look Tonight" with Rod Stewart in rehearsals.  And Rod's comments are great, too.  Here's everything....

KATHARINE’S TOP 7 PERFORMANCE (STANDARDS)

Song: “Someone To Watch Over Me”
Performed: April 18, 2006

Original Performed: In the Broadway musical, “Oh Kay!”
Written By: George and Ira Gershwin
Year: 1926

PRE-PERFORMANCE

Ryan: Alright, welcome back to American Idol. One singer left before we open up the lines and you vote. It is Katharine McPhee.

(clip of Katharine with Rod Stewart)

Katharine: Nice to meet you! (hugs Rod)
Rod: Hi. Good to see you to, Katharine. Whatcha going to sing for us?
Katharine: Well, I have a couple choices.
Rod: Which one do you want to give us first?
Katharine (singing): “Are the stars out tonight? I don’t know if it’s cloudy or bright…”

Katharine (voiceover): I was trying, you know, to feel out what he thought might be good.

Katharine (singing): “And the world is cold…” I’m the wedding singer! “And I’ll feel a glow just thinking of you and the way you look tonight”

(Rod dancing in the background, he joins Katharine for “and the way you look tonight”)

Rod (to camera): Katharine, I believe, is born to sing to standards.

Rod (to Katharine): I don’t want you to sing the last one because I’m going to sing that on the show. (Rod rips up the music sheet)
Katharine: (laughs, screams when Rod rips paper).

Katharine (to camera): I went over a lot of different songs and uh I just decided to sing “Someone To Watch Over Me”.

Katharine (singing): “Someone to watch over me…”

Rod (to camera): I would imagine big things for her.

Rod (to Katharine): There’s not much I can say about this girl. She’s fantastic!
Katharine: (giggles).

KATHARINE’S LYRICS

There’s a somebody I’m longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me

I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood
I know I could, always be good
To one who’ll watch over me

Although he may not be the man some girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key

Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone who’ll watch over me yeah

Someone who’ll watch over me

POST-PERFORMANCE

Randy: So yo. This is, this is your element. You love these kinds of songs.
Katharine: (gestures that she can’t hear Randy)
Randy: I know it’s hard to hear. This is your element, you love these kind of songs. Man, you sailed on this. You even put the little runs on the end. I loved it. It was excellent!
Katharine: Thank you.
Paula: Tonight, I feel like I’m watching for the first time falling in love with the essence of who you are. This reminds me of “Mr. Holland’s Opus”.
Katharine (excited, starting to cry a little): I know! That’s my favorite movie!
Paula: Oh good! And you know what, you picked the most perfect song that is so you.
Randy: Um, yeah. (nods in agreement)
Paula: Congratulations. You were elegant and beautiful.
Randy: Simon?
Simon: I really think, Katharine, you made the others look like good amateurs.
Paula: Oh, come on!
Katharine: (sheepish smile, laugh)
Simon: It was in a completely and utterly different league.
Randy: So you are saying she was excellent.
Paula: And congratulations.
Simon: You look like. Shush! (to Paula).
Paula: Shush! (waving finger at Simon)
Simon: You looked like a returning pro. I thought it was so much better than the others.
Paula: And Rod Stewart gets a big kudos because obviously he worked with you guys fantastically.
Simon: It was great.
Katharine: Thank you. Wow!

Ryan: Wow! With the home run performance! Father McPhee in tears. Katharine’s numbers. 1-866-IDOLS-07, 1-866-436-5707.
Katharine: Thank you!
Ryan: If you have Cingular wireless, you can text the word vote to 5707.
