After Katharine got thru country music week with Kenny Rogers, this week, on our look back of Katharine's journey thru the "American Idol" season.  This week, Katharine and the final 8 have their biggest challenge of the season.  The music of Queen.

Katharine and the rest of the group were shipped this week about 45 minutes south of Los Angeles, to the Honda Center (formerly The Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim), to meet the group, Queen, whose hits include classics such as:
We Are The Champions, Bohemian Rhaposdy among others.

Katharine did "Who Wants To Live Forever".  What do you remember of that performance?

I remember that Who Wants To Live Forever was Mandisa's song and when she took the hit (voted off) the week before, Katharine decided to change songs. I thought she sang this one better than some but still not what I consider a peak performance for her.  I have a couple of frame captures from the intro video in my PhotoBucket.

I remember thinking 'Good Job - you nailed it".  Simon told her the lighting director made her look great - uh, no idiot....she already looks great without the lighting director....she wore a beautiful red blouse.

I had not heard the song before, after Paula said that only "you, Katharine McPhee" could sing a song that Barbra Streisand or Celine Dion sings - I went back and checked my ipod and sure enough I had this song on it sung by sarah brightman.......seriously, Kat's version and Kat's voice on this song - were better!!

I did think she struggled just a bit on a couple notes - not so much pitchy --- but could have headed into screetchy if she wasn't careful...

Although I spent 2 hrs voting for her - I was much more relaxed because so many of the others were horrible that night....I remember thinking Kellie (bohemian rhapsoday) did a really good job (especially after Constatine's performance the year before) and so did Chris (as usual).....I actually thought Taylor's performance was really weak and for a moment thought he might go home....but it was Bucky....

I love this performance! The presentation with the lighting and everything, very broadway. The vocal was amazing!
It sounded like she shouted a bit on the two high notes, but other than that it was flawless! Definitely one of my favs.

"it was almost the moment". I love that part. Have we had a "moment" in THIS season of Idol yet? I don't think so.

A bit of an oddball song, but then it's Queen after all.

Probably the most dramatic performance of AI5, Kat looked fantastic and nailed the song, except for maybe a few strident notes at the end, as Mark already noted. I remember going crazy trying to figure what Kat could possibly sing by Queen and drawing blanks. I wondered if maybe she could get away with doing  'Big Spender' since Queen had performed it on their live album. But it turned out that she made a wise choice in WWTLF.

I know the vocals weren't perfect on this one but...just the whole thing.  The lights, the look, the way Kat worked the camera with her facial expressions.  And then that final note when he voice "cracks" (my term).  "Who waits forever......anywaayayyayayyyyyy"

Loved this.  And yeah, "It was almost the moment".  You forget about all the praise the judges gave Katharine sometimes because all you remember is the garbage that started IHN night.  Simon never went to what he said about Melinda last night "You give us nothing to criticize" but he may as well from all his glowing comments to this point.

I think people in general forgot how brilliant Kat was in the first half of the competition.  In some ways she gets hurt by her looks when it comes to appreciating her singing ability.  And her look helps her more than it hurts but you think people would look at Lakisha & Melinda differently if they looked like Haley?  It was almost like it was difficult for some people to believe Katharine can sing like she does because she's so amazingly beautiful.  And she didn't even flaunt it about 90% of the time!

She barely even let the legs out.  Let's see...a little on Top 20 Night.  A little bit for CROCS.  Hello world, meet my luscious body on "I Have Nothing" night.  A little for AAO (T5).  A little for CHFIL.  A little for IBICF.  And then she went pretty sexy for AGNBTB with the boots and short skirt (prelude to an album cover).  Then MD at the finale somewhat.

I think the only times you can say she "went for sexy" was I Have Nothing & Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues.  Haley's pulling it out every week now because she knows she has to.  Katharine never did even if she got accused of things with the yellow dress.

Well and don't forget Grand Finale night but the competition was over then.

KATHARINE’S TOP 8 PERFORMANCE (QUEEN)

Song: “Who Wants To Live Forever”
Performed: April 11, 2006

Original Performer: Queen
Written By: Brian May
Year: 1986

PRE-PERFORMANCE

Ryan: Welcome back to American Idol. A quick plug for our friends at the website. Log onto americanidol.com, you can join the VIP lounge for members only photos, videos and Idol gear. (Ryan passes Peisha & Adriana by while he’s introducing Katharine) Now it is back to the music, let’s see what Katharine is performing. Watch.

Katharine: The song I performed with Queen was “Don’t Stop Me Now”.

Katharine (singing): “I wanna make a supersonic man out of you! Don’t stop me, don’t stop me, don’t stop me…” (tremendous little dance move there).

Brian May: She’s got a lot of joy in her, doesn’t she? She got a good bounce to her, you know.

Katharine (on stage to the band): It was a little rough. Thank you so much! (big giggle)

Katharine (to camera): But I decided to change my mind to sing “Who Wants To Live Forever”.

Katharine (rehearsing): “Who wants to live forever…who dares to love forever?”

Katharine: And I just decided to change the song because instead of having an up-tempo song, I wanted to just stand there and sing. And have it really simple. Have it just be about the voice, the lyrics, the music. And um, not so much about running around the stage.

Ryan (holding Peisha’s hand): With Momma McPhee now. A change of heart. Hmm, will it pay off? Why are you shaking so much?
Peisha: (big nervous laugh)
Ryan:  This song was featured on the soundtrack to the movie “Highlander” in 1986. With “Who Wants To Live Forever” it is, your daughter, Katharine McPhee.

KATHARINE’S LYRICS

There’s no time for us
There’s no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams
Yet slips away from us

Who wants to live forever
Who dares to love forever

When love must die

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today

Who waits forever anyway

POST-PERFORMANCE

Randy:  Alright. So yo, it was good to hear. It was good to kind of hear you switch your song. It was probably a good idea. It was a good idea you switched your song to kind of return to the form. Cause like, this is your element. I mean a little Broadway, big song, kind of big voice. It was a little pitchy in spots and I thought in some points it was a little big for you but you did a good job I think, all in all.
Katharine:  (giggle) Thank you.
Paula: I love when I see an artist make a choice to change their mind and you made the right decision. To just stand there and be glorious, with your glorious voice, I mean it’s the song that big singers like Celine and Barbra Streisand take on. And you Katharine McPhee, can handle it and you did a great job.
Katharine: Thank you.
Simon: Katharine. I mean that, that was almost the moment. You know, I agree with Randy. There were some tuning problems at parts.
Katharine: Nothing a recording, a recording studio can’t fix (laughs).
Simon: You owe a big kiss to the director and the lighting director there because they made you look amazing.
Katharine: Thank you. I know, I do. Thank you, guys!
Simon: I mean really good. But overall, I think it was probably one of the strongest tonight, yeah. Very good.
Katharine: Thank you!

Ryan: So it looks like that decision paid off.
Katharine: It did.
Ryan: Come on over here. Let’s get the votes. This is some of the sweat from your mother’s hand.
Katharine: Yay! Hi Mom! Hi Dad!
Ryan: 1-866-IDOLS-05, 1-866-436-5705. If you are with Cingular wireless, you can text the word vote to 5705. Good work Katharine.
Katharine: Thank you!

Just a side note...there's something about reading what was done in these things that's funny to me.  You don't understand how hard it was to get all of Randy's "Yo's" down correctly.  And then when the judges would talk over each other.  Sigh.  At least I have a place for these now.  Hope you guys like them.  I'm glad we're doing this.  It's good to be reminded each week what we were looking forward to seeing.  Even when Katharine wasn't perfect she was still....well, Katharine.  And that was good enough for me.  Wow, that was sappy.

OK then...and I'm not sure we've had the moment this year either.  As much as I do enjoy Jordin & Blake.  And I think Melinda's really good.  I guess Jordin came close with "I Who Have Nothing".  I think that was the best so far.  Don't think we've seen the moment they'll be using in next year's commercials yet.  We don't have the SOTR moment.

Side question...what was Taylor's moment last year?  Purple jacket at the finale performance?  I'll admit that was pretty good.  And it did make Kat's BHATCT look a little tame.  You almost wish Kat could have done Think at the finale (but it got hijacked in the previous week due to AI Compliation promotion).  Not that it would have mattered.  Taylor was going to win no matter what but...would have been more fun.

This was one of my favorite Kat performances, even though it had its own controversies...behind the scenes. It was the week when I really got involved with the 'AI' board, and there were people who frequently attended the dress rehearsals from there who'd come in and tell people how their favorite contestant did. What the viewing public didn't know was that Kat had to sing 'WWTLF' THREE times that night. The reason was because her initial dress rehearsal performance (which you see a clip of during the wrap-ups of the performances at the end of the show) had to be redone due to some kind of technical glitch with the sound or something. I remember people who attended the dress rehearsals coming on the board reporting how awesome Kat was on the initial run-through of the song. Her vocals were perfect. But, because that song is incredibly hard to sing, she strained her voice and ended up sounding more strained on the higher notes during the second run-through they taped for the after-show wrap-ups. It's said that the third performance (that actually aired) was better...though you can still tell that Kat's voice was strained a tad on the high notes. It wasn't her fault at all...and it's all because she had to sing the song so many times. Any professional singer's voice would sound just as strained (or worse) after singing 'WWTLF' three times within a couple of hours.

Nevertheless, Kat still pulled this off. I remarked on the board at the time that this was Kat's true audition for Broadway should she perform there eventually. It reminded me of a spellbinding number in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical (sort of in the vein of 'Phantom of the Opera')--and some compared her to Sarah Brightman. Yeah, SB did a recording of the same song. Nevertheless, Kat's version is still the best I've ever heard it done outside of Queen's original recording.

Well, the controversy lied in that Kat's perfect performance done during the first dress rehearsal take was never seen. A lot of us were hoping they'd show that somewhere to prove Kat did the song perfectly on the first run-through. Back then, a lot of us were ticked and more or less suspected 'AI' was testing her or trying to screw her over. It even lead some people to call this the 'WWTLF'/'WTF' fiasco.

So, that's one "missing" performance in Kat's performance canon on 'AI.' Hopefully someone there will dig out the old tape of her singing the perfect version...despite it being long after the fact now. Kat's proven herself beyond belief as of now. Back then, though, a lot of the fans were getting frustrated that she was being blackballed when she hadn't proven herself 100% yet.

Those stills of Kat during the performance are still amazing to look at. It was good, too, that the judges at least considered it one of her best performances. If only there was a requirement to sing their songs only once and not twice...or three times in the event of an audio problem.

Also, I remember rumors flying everywhere on the 'AI' board about what Kat was going to sing that night. Some of us even went so far as to insinuate she should cover 'Get Down, Make Love.' Well, I threw that out there one night there as a joke. We all thought she'd do a rocker number that night. But she made the best choice...and brought that Broadway stage sensibility that Freddie Mercury used to bring in Queen's live performances.

I disagree. You know I think that Kat has an amazing voice, in fact I would go so far as to say that she has one of the best voices in modern pop music. However, it was very inconsistent on Idol, and she had a few weak vocals on Idol e.g. Who Wants to Live Forever, My Destiny etc. I think the enormity of the situation got to her and she became very nervous at times, which resulted in her being off-key. Sometimes we gotta just accept that on the night it didn't go to plan.

A 'true' singer, someone of Kat's calibre could get up and sing that song three times in one day. It's all about singing correctly and wisely, and I'm sure Momma McPhee's coaching will have taught her all she needed to know.

How many times she said "Thank You"? Oh, Kat! This is one of my most fave performances of Her.. She looked gorgeous and like a true diva.. And.. If you guys remember when AI6 started the Top16.. The first clip they showed was Katharine singing this song. Then continued by Daughtry, Kelly, Carrie .. I'm so happy they treat Kat like other Successful Idols.

You're right Angus. Kat was SO nervous on AI, more so as the contest progressed, that she at times completely forgot her vocal technique and strained her voice. She also constantly tried to sing glory notes louder than her natural ability, further straining her voice. Anyone ever notice how big many singer's mouths are? Kat has a 'normal' size mouth, and a 'normal' size, though thoroughly exquisite, voice. Also, everyone assumes that since Peisha is a vocal coach that Kat benefitted from intensive vocal training. Ever try to teach your kid's anything? Sometimes they'ed rather learn from anyone BUT mom and dad!

With the hustle and bustle surrounding the contestants each week, by Kat changing songs is another point that shows what a true artist she really is.
