I was wondering if other katharine fans think that she will change her image under the direction of David Foster. I thought that she looked very classy during the idol performance. I can always see her wearing the glamorous dresses, but I personally like her better dressed down in jeans and a basic shirt. When she sings her love songs it is great to see her in a nice dress and heels, but I love when she performs upbeat songs, jumping around on stage barefoot.
Do you think that Katharine will stray from the images that I described or will she stay with what she has always previously done? I just hope that the new album does very well and Kat will be able to release more singles.
What she wore tonight only represented the style of the song and doesn't mean she'll be formal in every single performance. Admittedly, I'm intrigued just how well Kat and David will get along when it comes to crafting an album that pleases both sides. After noticing that smiley glance between the two during DF's piano solo (plus the hug at the end)--it seems Kat's pretty happy having David as her producer. Even so, we do have to remember that she criticized the Celine Dion sound she almost initially undertook on her debut album at RCA. That means she and David will have to compromise as much as an international summit meeting between two world leaders. Thankfully, no nuclear weapons are pointed at each other as the negotiations take place.
Just a guess: It seems likely the album Kat and David are doing will be a combination of that Celine sound (as witnessed tonight) and some more modern pop songs. I can't see any kind of urban flavor to the album--unless DF allows some of that without giving off the Foster scowl.
If anybody can have a good creative argument--it's Kat and David. When you know your producer well, productive arguments are good. Kat didn't know her producers at RCA well--so her standing up to the producers to do something different probably was misconstrued (based on the recent comments from fathead execs at RCA).
What I do know is that DF frequently gets into arguments with some of his Foster Children (mostly Michael Buble from what I hear through the grapevine). Buble stood his ground, however, on what he wanted and got it. In other words, Foster is like a stepfather to his artists who can argue with his star and get some interesting creative results.
Here's hoping we'll have a "Making of the Album" type of documentary after Kat's album with David is done. The footage from that should be much more fascinating than the one we saw from RCA.
Also, I think it's inevitable that Kat will have a lot of costume changes on her first tour. The same should apply on her TV performances depending on the nature of the song.
I saw nothing wrong, however, with Kat setting a classier perception of herself for this one night...
What has she always previously done? I'm confused with what you are saying. I think what she going to do with Foster is probably a mixture of love songs & midtempo type stuff. I don't think we'll be hearing any more Open Toes or Do What You Do under Foster's guidance. But I could see him bringing in his pal Babyface to give her some more Everywhere I Go kind of songs to blend with the ballads. I don't want a full album of nothing but slow love songs. I don't think anyone does. But I think she's going to probably get back to what most people expected her to do coming off Idol originally. And I think it's smart. Her audience is not teenagers. I think we've figured that out. We read that plenty of times in reviews when she did concerts. She's a little more sophisicated than that. And sure, I guess that means she isn't going to be dominating Top 40 radio unless it shifts a little back to what it was in the early-to-mid 1990's.
But the most important thing is that we're going to hear her voice again. It's not going to get lost in all the "production" that the Nate Hills' of the world do. And don't get me wrong, I like most of the songs on Kat's first album a lot. But I don't think that's her niche. What she does best is what we saw on Idol tonight plus songs like Mary Jane, Me, Neglected, Everywhere I Go, etc, etc.
As Foster said..."she's a magnificient singer" and we're going to get to appreciate that now.
her audience does include teens as well, myself included(18). younger people, who arent just forty year old men with crushes on kat. she definitely young and i honestly hope her next album isnt all ballads and i dont even think she wnts that either. her music should be fun, playful, diverse, just like she is. her first album was great but iwth a lack of promotion and marketing

I'm with you in agreeing that Katharine does have a wide variance of fans. I'm female and at the other end of the age group! I, too, enjoyed her first album attempt even though it was quite a bit different than I expected! It didn't take off the way we would have liked....for whatever reason. But, I do think that Katharine had to give that type of music a try because she enjoys listening to it herself.
Katharine, as we have learned, is going to be a "mystery" person. She even exudes that in her public appearances. Take Wednesday night's fantastic performance. When she performed, she came across so controlled, so sophisticated and worldly (in a very good way). But then, during the interview, she still has that young girl vibe with a bit of the "giggly". That, in itself, I have decided is what has confused me over the past two years when we've been privileged to watch her! On one hand, when she shows us her real self, she is so kind, so giving and actually quite deep in her perceptions of life. That very mature part of her personality definitely shows through in her performances. But then, she turns it all around with her "bubbly", giddy side. One never knows for sure which Katharine is going to take the stage! I, for one, feel that is a very endearing quality as both parts sum up the whole!
I'm not at all concerned about what kind of album that she and David come up with. I think it is going to be very well received. I personally don't know of any artist that gets the backing and direction from David Foster and then, "strikes out"! His record stands for itself....as well as the artists he has worked with.
On a last thought: Was it my own "wishes" or were Katharine and David received better than any returning AI artist in the past? (I'm not including the "Idol Gives Back" show.) I just don't recall hearing the audience applaud in different parts of the performance when other returning artists were performing. Wednesday, with Katharine's performance, it was definitely there. One can especially hear it when turning up the volume.
Another parting question.....does anyone know if Ryan mentioned her performance on his radio show?
Moms! Another older mom that is with you all the way! It is so funny reading your posts because just the other night I was going on about Katharine (like I do) to my mom and I was telling her about how she is able to sing like a pro and then come back down to earth with her joyful and innocent personality. Great minds do think alike
