Now, that Katharine McPhee made the top 12 of "American Idol", we begin her 11 week run thru the finals at the Kodak Theater last year.

This week, the top 12 got to do the music of Stevie Wonder.  We had to wait an almost hour and a half to Katharine perform on the larger "American Idol" stage.

This is how Ryan introduced Katharine's first performance:

"And cue host. Two weeks ago, Katharine struggled with the Stevie Wonder song, "All Is Fair In Love",  Let's see what she does with "Until You Come Back To Me".  Here is Katharine McPhee.

What do you all remember of that performance?

This is vintage Kat and one of my very favorite AI perfs.....just brilliant vocals!!Kat's ability to command the stage and flirt with the camera...quite evident!!Wasn't crazy about the make up and dress, but Kat would look stunning in a burlap sack,so who cares!!Loved the little knock she gestured with her left hand as she began the song!Kat always does more than just sing... her timing is so perfect that she is able to throw in these gestures or dance moves in a split second!!No one can hold a candle to this woman.....no one even comes close!!!!!

An absolutely amazing performance.  IMHO as good a performance as Idol had ever seen up to that point in it's 5 year run.  If there were still any doubts as to who the star of the show was, that pretty much answered those questions.

it was the first time kat showed cleavage, and when she came out... i was like... woah kat. she had that dark eyeshadow on, looked very different.

i had never heard the song in my life, even though it was a classic. it was very well song, but i didn't know how great of a performance it was at the time because the song was totally new to me. i actually felt at that point kat needed to pick songs people were already familiar with... it'd help her gain more votes.

the dress was kinda wierd, but actually, it was part of her "costume" to salute the era the song came from. that's what people didn't get, and so she was criticized.

You have to remember that the top 12 finalists, were singing the music of Stevie Wonder that week.

Stevie Wonder's career has spanned 5 decades, starting when he was "Little Stevie Wonder", and he has won probably every award known to man, from 25 Grammys, A Kennedy Center honor, etc.

By the way, next week's look back, is the "Music Of The 1950's" with Barry Manilow and the finalists at the Las Vegas Hilton.

I thought the dress made her look heavy and was not  particularly flattering.  The blue eye shadow wasn't scoring any points either.

Hmmm, what else....oh yeah, the good stuff.

Stevie Wonder showed her props.

She was clearly the star of the night.

She commanded, nay more or less demanded a larger stage, because this performance was too big for that tiny studio they had been in.

And that  dress had a couple of  positive aspects as well.

Probably second only to Think of the early performance that really showed the "IT" factor that Simon talks so much about.

i remember this one. I didn't think it was her greatest, but she definately clinched a top 4 placing with that one. Plus she looked phenomenal.

UYCBTM is one of my favorites, maybe even THE favorite of the competition. Kat really floored me that night. We didn't yet have a source leaking her songs, so it was a complete surprise. And when she strutted out onto the big stage, wearing that dress and seducing the camera with her eyes, and sang the most amazing version of that song I've ever heard (sorry Aretha!), I was knocked for a loop...almost a TKO, but luckily I remained conscious to enjoy the rest of the performance.

I remembered that I was away in China on a business trip and I was watching the show in my hotel room. I was super duper anxious to see Kat perform and see how she looks with all of the make up and all ... and when came on stage and started to sing "Though you don't call anymore..." .. I can't help it but smile ... she's just so great! She's beautiful too! WOW! After that performance .. I know for sure that I've caught a severe case of McPheever ... hahahah ..

William, thanks for doing these threads. UYCBTM still is one of my favorites. Kat looked amazing. Her response after the judges comments is priceless. She was overwhelmed.

I have listened to the original Aretha version, but Kat made it her own, somehow much more personal than the original.

Thanks for posting the vid. What a wonderful performance!! Definitely not by an amateur. I don't think any of AI6's contestants are at this skill level yet. We were blessed last year.

This is about the time I started watching 'AI' Season Five seriously and realizing how great Kat was/is--so these threads are becoming true favorites for me, William. Thanks a lot for bringing these back and taking us back to a great time in TV history to say the least. It still seems like only yesterday...yet still so long ago at the same time somehow.

Yes, Kat's 'UYCBTM' is proof that Kat really connects with Stevie Wonder's songs--and maybe should do some more covers of his material. It's also Kat when she was truly in her element...plus her appealing vocal timbre coming through with the best possible song. I've seen the performance of this over and over again (it may actually be my very favorite of all Kat performances on 'AI')--and I never get tired of hearing her take on it. Also, it's VERY safe to say that it bests Aretha's and even Stevie's recordings of the song. Stevie's version was done when he was just a kid and never charted apparently. Aretha's charted in the early 70's I think--though I've strangely never warmed to her version considering how great she is.

All in all, I think this song probably fit Kat the best of any. It's a Soul/R&B classic, it's romantic and has every element to it in the lyrics that Kat obviously related to on a strong level. Even Kat's called this out as one of her favorite songs and performances...and she even sang a few bars of it a cappella on a recent radio interview that was posted here.

Sure, that dress wasn't one of my favorites that she wore during this--but Kat was still very beautiful in every way...both in stage magnetism and her vocal quality that night.

By the way on a related note to that night: Was it Lisa Tucker who messed up the lyrics to a Stevie song during the master class with SW himself? I couldn't remember--and I don't remember the song she forgot the lyrics to. If anybody could remember that, it'd be interesting to bring that back into memory. Starting with the Song of the 50's night, I'll be able to remember every single detail though...including phone voting and viewing parties.

This wasn't Katharine best look.  I mean there were some positives (as shown in that picture...I think this was our introduction to "the beauty mark" we've grown to know and love ) but um, I know my first impressions when she walked on stage in that dress at the beginning of the show was, "What in the world are you wearing, Katharine?"  And the makeup was all wrong but she sang the song wonderfully.  She truly established herself as one of the top people to contend with this night (on the big stage...she did it with SIFFY & Think on the smaller one).  And she kept on rolling the next week with CROCS.

Here's the text for this performance.  I think I should do this since these seemingly aren't going to see the light of day elsewhere anymore....might as well put them to some use.

KATHARINE’S TOP 12 PERFORMANCE (STEVIE WONDER WEEK)

Song:  “Until You Come Back To Me”

Performed:  March 14, 2006

Original Performer:  Aretha Franklin & Stevie Wonder (separately)

Written By:  Morris Broadnax, Clarence Paul and Stevie Wonder

Year:  1967 (written), 1976 (released by Wonder), 1974 (released by Franklin)

PRE-PERFORMANCE

Ryan:  Welcome back to American Idol, Stevie Wonder supplying the music tonight.  Katharine McPhee is going to do the next song.

(Katharine’s intro clip)

Katharine:  Out of anyone in the music industry if someone was to ask me who I’d like to work with I would automatically say Stevie Wonder without skipping a beat.

(clip of all 12 Idols singing “My Cherie Amour” with Stevie Wonder watching)

Katharine:  When Stevie Wonder walked in the room, I think I just was in awe.  I looked around me and everybody else was filled with tears and it was just like a really powerful intimate moment that we were all able to share with each other.

Katharine (to Stevie, shaking his hand):  I’m Katharine.

Stevie:  A pleasure to meet you.

Katharine:  Originally we I found out we were doing Stevie Wonder week, my heart kind of sunk (laughs) because I’ve already attempted a Stevie Wonder song and it didn’t go over so well.

Stevie:  What are you going to sing?

Katharine:  I’m going to sing “Until You Come Back To Me”.

Katharine (singing):  “I’m gonna rap on your door, tap on your window pane.”

Stevie:  She has a lot of potential.  I don’t think that Aretha would feel bad with her singing “Until You Come Back To Me”.  I know Stevie wouldn’t mind.

Katharine:  Hopefully this week, I did a better job with picking a Stevie song.

Ryan:  Cue the host.  Fingers crossed for better luck the second time around.  Here she is with “Until You Come Back To Me”.  Please welcome the one and only Katharine McPhee!

KATHARINE’S LYRICS

Though you don't call anymore
I sit and wait in vain
I guess I'll rap on your door (your door)
Tap on your window pane (tap on your window pane)
I want to tell you baby
The changes I've been going through
Missing you
Listen you

Until you come back to me
That's what I'm gonna do

Living for you my dear
Is like living in a world of constant fear
Hear my plea, I've got to make you see
That our love is dying

Oh oh oh oh

Although your phone you ignore
Somehow I must, somehow I must, somehow I must explain
I'm guess I’ll rap on your door (your door)
Tap on your, your window pane (tap on your window pane)
I'm gonna count by your steps
Until I get through to you
I've got to change your view baby
Until you come back to me
That's what I'm gonna do yeah

POST-PERFORMANCE

Randy:  Wow, so check it out.  Alright, the Katharine McPhee that I fell in love when we saw you in the auditions.  The first time we met you, America she’s back tonight and she’s off the chain!  That was hot!  We got a hot one tonight!  That was unbelievable.  I loved everything about it.  Dude, you are the bomb!

Katharine:  Thank you (big smile).

Paula:  There’s something about your voice that just pierces through the heart.  It really does and from the start when you open up your mouth…man oh man, tonight was your best performance ever.

Randy:  Yeah, man.

(Katharine fixes hair, big smile)

Simon:  Katharine, you’re good.

(Katharine enormous smile)

Simon:  You know, you know, you know who you are beginning to remind me of.  I remember the first time we saw Kelly Clarkson…

Randy:  Uh oh, here we go.

Katharine:  Oh my God!

Simon:  At this stage in the competition and there’s something about you that’s reminding me, vocally, of Kelly Clarkson.

Katharine:  Thank you.

Ryan:  Katharine McPhee.  You’re good, you know!  Congratulations.

Katharine:  Thank you.  I (giggle), I, I broke my heels today.

Ryan:  You did?

Katharine:  It was right at the dress rehearsal, so I had to get new shoes and they were so nice to go get me new shoes.  So I’ve had a lot of malfunctions in my outfit.

Ryan:  The more famous you get out here, the nicer people are.

Katharine:  So nice.

Ryan:  They’re your true friends!  How have you prepared differently for tonight’s show?

Katharine:  Uh, I don’t know.  I just, like I was really, really nervous and my dress rehearsal wasn’t the way I wanted it to go but I don’t know, I just, I don’t know.  I don’t know.

Ryan:  That’s alright.  You don’t have to have the answers if you sing well.  Vote for Katharine by dialing 1-866-IDOLS-09, 1-866-436-5709.  You’re waving at Lance Bass over there, he’s watching you.  Or you can text the word vote to 5709, voting at the end of the show.

(Katharine attempts to hold up nine fingers and keep hold of the microphone at the same time.  She looks very goofy doing it).

(Ryan wraps up Katharine and sends show to commercial).

"I saw Katharine McPhee when there were about 12 contestants left on American Idol. She blew me away. I loved her grace, her style, her poise, her voice and her hair! I wanted her to be the face of Sexy Hair because she represented everything that I had in my head for the brand: youth, beauty, talent, class, a young sophistication, and sexiness." -- Jim Morrison, CEO of Sexy Hair Products.

She really looked like her mother in the clip of her rehearsing with Stevie Wonder... (I'm sure she'd be thrilled to hear that. Doesn't every 20-something
girl want to be compared to her mother?) But she looked very beautiful...

I really liked the dress at the time and still do, much more than the famed Yellow Dress - classy and sexy at the same time, and it really showed off her
awesome shoulders. Yes, I said shoulders, and I mean it.

This might have been the first week that I thought, "hey, I need to see this girl every week". I hadn't started voting seriously yet, but I knew I didn't
want Kat to go away.

(The audience shots in video are pretty cool - you see Nick popping up and down with his "Vote For Kat" sign.  Good guy.)

Thanks for doing this william, and thanks to Joe and Shady for the supporting stuff.

Oh great thread!  This will be fun.   I loved Kat's version of "Until You Come Back to Me!"  She totally had a 70s-vibe going with the make-up and the dress, I loved how she entered the performance walking down the stage platform too.  You really felt the change in energy and atmosphere on this night, it was like "Kat has arrived,"  and the first of many different looks we'd see from her.

"The one and only Katharine McPhee".... So true, and I don't believe Ryan has since introduced any other contestant in quite that way!
Kat was totally charming and engaging, while nailing this song!So much fun to watch her gradual artistic development and ascent to stardom!

Also here we have the first,of what was to become, several Simon cliche references to Kelly Clarkson.Guess Kat took it as a compliment, especially when Simon specified"vocally"!
Interesting, that in retrospect,Simon's comments are so predictable and unoriginal.
