On the inside back cover of Vanity Fair magazine, there's a picture of Katharine on a carousel horse.  If you go to:  visitcalifronia.com/vanityfair you'll see the picture as well as a question and answer feature.  If this is old news, please forgive me.

Here's a cut and paste of the interview:

VF: You were born in Los Angeles and raised in Sherman Oaks, so you really know California. What were some of your favorite memories? Did you and your family take a lot of road trips when you were a kid?

KM: There were always road trips with the family! We [went] to San Diego, Palm Springs, Mammoth, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco... My favorite was Mammoth because skiing is one of my favorite hobbies and some of my greatest family memories are there... Celebrating Easter and Thanksgiving in Palm Springs with my grandparents have always been some [of my] favorite California moments. I always get so excited to go there during the fall every year because it’s so warm. A top California moment is watching the fireworks on the 4th of July in San Diego. I love being wrapped up in a blanket with my sister while being entertained by the fireworks show. I was always a huge fan of the Cinco de Mayo holiday in elementary school. It doesn’t get much more California than Cinco de Mayo. We would order special kinds of churros at school and acknowledge the Mexican festivities. I really just wanted the churros!

VF: Today, how would you spend an ideal three days traveling in and around California?

KM: First, I would spend the day driving down Palos Verdes Drive and having lunch at the beautiful Trump National Golf Club. The lunch there is so good. Then, the next day, I would drive to Palm Springs to spend the day with my grandparents in Rancho Mirage at the Thunderbird Estates. I love just going there to relax in the sun and swim in the pool. To continue my time in the sun, I would spend my third day visiting my friend at her place in San Diego. We would lie out at Pacific Beach and enjoy being allowed to drink on the beach (that’s the only beach where you’re allowed to drink.)

VF: Do you have any favorite off-the-beaten-path destinations? Or any outdoor adventures you’d like to try but haven’t yet?

KM: I recently bought an L.A.’s Greatest Hikes book and have yet to check those out. From the pictures, there looks like there are some really incredible places to go see and I haven’t had the time to go yet.

VF: Any other places outside of L.A. that you would like to hike and explore?

KM: I would really love to go to Yosemite. I have never been there and that's a place that everyone says you have to see in your lifetime. And people can't believe I haven't been there since I grew up in California. I would take a couple days and camp out there as well, exploring things [and] hiking.

VF: When you have visitors in town, what are the top three “must-dos” and why?

KM: Well, of course a must-do would be to take my visitors to Disneyland because it’s the happiest place on earth! Going to Santa Monica would be another because whether it’s just going there to see a movie, shopping, or hanging out on the pier, it’s a great environment to entertain people. Paradise Cove in Malibu would be my third must-do because it’s the best family beach in California.

VF: There’s great shopping in Malibu, too. What are your favorite shopping destinations in California?

KM: One of my favorite shopping destinations is Planet Blue Boutique in Malibu because they have so many different kinds of designers. The store offers so many different kinds of cute and comfortable clothes to wear for your everyday attire. I always find something I love there. [And] I love going to State Street in Santa Barbara because it has a little bit of everything: great clothes, great shoes, and great things for your home. There are a lot of restaurants to try [there] and everything is really close.

VF: When you head out for a night on the town with friends, where do you go?

KM: Going to see a movie at the ArcLight Movie Theater at the Cinerama Dome in L.A. is one of my favorite things to do at night. I’m a big movie person. The House of Blues on Sunset [Boulevard] is fun because you can always find a great show to go to and the atmosphere there is the best part. Spending an evening at the Hollywood Bowl during the summer is such a wonderful experience. You can make a whole night of it with great food and great wine in a really romantic setting.

VF: Have you explored the vineyards in Napa yet? Do you have any favorites?

KM: I have never been to any vineyards. Another thing on my [to-do] list!

VF: How would you describe your ultimate California indulgence?

KM: Indulging in California to me is definitely going out to eat at Mexican restaurants because California has the best Mexican food!

VF: So, if you only had one meal left, where would you eat?

KM: I know this sounds cheesy, but my favorite place in the whoooole world to eat [is]... Are you ready for this? Okay, Benihana!!! I went here for every birthday growing up and it’s still my favorite place. I just love their hibachi shrimp!

VF: As a true-blue California native, share something you don’t think anyone else knows about the Golden State. What’s your favorite “insider’s” tip?

KM: Well, that's a tough one because all of the cool places are mostly known. But I dated someone for a while who lived in Palos Verdes, and we spent a lot of time exploring throughout the peninsula. It’s one of the most beautiful little cities right on the beach. It’s a very classy place and gives you the chance to get out of the city.

VF: Did California and its music influence your singing career? What’s on your iPod right now?

KM: Wow, I’ve never thought of my music being influenced by the place I live. I don't really think it’s had a huge impact, but it sure helped [that I was] able to open the sunroof, blast the music, and sing along! Ha ha! On my iPod right now is a little indie band out of San Francisco called Del Bombers. They are really cool.

VF: Where are the best places to enjoy a California sunset?

KM: No matter where [you] are driving down the 101 going west, you will always find a great sunset alongside the beach.

VF: Describe your ideal day on the beach: Where are you, what are you doing, and what is your state of mind?

KM: I’m in Malibu with my big blanket and umbrella. I have lots of sunscreen [on], tons of magazines, and for most of the day, I’ll be swimming in the ocean. I love the water. When I come back to my blanket, there’s a nice, home-packed lunch that tastes oh-so good. There’s nothing better than homemade sandwiches on the beach. My state of mind is calm and happy, and I’m feeling sexy.

Good and nice interview. Kat had a great childhood and her family memories are valuable to her. She seems so close to her grandparents. I like that part when she enjoyed being wrapped in a blanket with her sister while watching the fireworks in San Diego. Kat is so down to earth with Mexican foods - a true Californian!!  The fact that she had training in swimming, she mostly enjoys the beaches. And, of course, as a young lady, as I was once, she loves shopping. All normal for her.

The Napa Valley wine tasting trip is also a must do, for me. Mendocino is a lovely place for getaways. The Yosemite trip that she hopes to do, that she really have to make. I did it in 2004. I should say, it's one of the most spectacular places to see and go to in the USA - even for someone who's not into outdoors would be totally awed. It's so large that you'd need about 3 days at least to enjoy everything - hiking, climbing, boating, camping, etc.

If I may continue, the feeling that I had being in Yosemite was like that of my feeling when I went to the Yellowstone Nat'l Park in Wyoming in 1987 - seeing the Grand Tetons and the wild life (buffalos) there, and of course, the ever amazing "Old Faithful" geyser. Awesome place. It's the oldest national park in the country, Yellowstone is.  Other spectacular places outside CA would be Arizona's Grand Canyon, Utah's Bryce Canyon and the acres and acres of barren Bonneville Salt Flats, South Dakota's man-made wonder, the Mount Rushmore, and of course New York's Niagara Falls. I don't know if Florida's Everglades (wilderness/wetlands) should be classified spectacular, but just to be in the middle of that huge swampy place, miles and miles away from land, among the endangered species, crocs and alligators (on an airboat of course) could be eerie but exciting at the same time. I've been blessed to have gone and seen these places and I could only say, youth is the time to travel and discover and enjoy places, however expensive and long the drive/trip is. By all means, do it.

Bigshady, thanks for posting.

Movie actors like Paul Newman, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall and Bette Davis make me want to live in the era they lived but I could have been just as inspired even now while I watch their work in films.
