To Dream Again!
Come out from under your rock anytime, Phee! Those pre-Idol performances are treasures.
You can thank Ken for those, not sure how he managed to get them.
They are of historic importance, you can see where she came from and how she has grown. And how she is the same.
Got little bugs and development to do still so no time for chit chat!
So the long-coveted footage finally surfaces! Good work, Ken! I don't think I would've been hooked on Kat based on this performance alone. She sings quite well, but styles "Come Rain or Come Shine" more on a gospel (?) vein, which isn't quite my cup of tea. What I really loved about her Idol performance of it, besides her phenomenal vocals, was the jazz arrangement and her incredible stage presence. (The website brought up the clip in a tiny, unresizable window, so I couldn't really see what Kat was doing onstage. I'm basing my opinion of her stage presence on the brief historical clip from Extra!) I was reading some old message board comments of Idol during the week Kat sang CRoCS (not having witnessed it in real time), and it seems this performance (the last note) was the origin of the derogatory "McScreech" nickname? If that's where the moniker started, it makes no sense, because it's common for jazz singers to end a song on a loud, brassy note. I really enjoyed seeing Kat singing in a true jazz singer's style AND exhibiting jazz mannerisms (like how she "cut off the band" at the end of "Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues")...
I think it may have been a $ issue. They have to clear the song to be able to play it. Maybe with CROCS they clear it once and they are good. The other song Kat sang was her mom's song from Out of the Blue (P's CD) and obviously that probably came at a lesser cost or none due to the family relationship.
I agree with you but it makes me laugh that one of the criticisms of Katharine on Idol was that she was a little stiff, she didn't feel the songs, she didn't emote...I always thought that was crazy talk. But there is a different in her performances when she really relates to a song personally. We've seen plenty of examples of that over the past almost 2 years.
